2017 Predictions Contest

Post by kcowan »

I will run the predictions contest again in 2017!

The averages of all predictions were pretty close for the GOLD:
Median 1125
Average 1138
Actual 1169

The rest of the averages were wildly pessimistic with a few notable exceptions!
Please enter your guesses or forecasts for the values on Dec 31, 2017 in the following format:

DOW:
TSX:
GOLD:
OIL:
CAD:

with the dollar amounts in USD. The index is just a number.

Deadline for entry is January 16th at 9:30 am EST. Results will be published monthly. If you decide to change your submission, please just edit the original submission before then. Good luck and happy investing.

Some nice round numbers to get the ball rolling.

DOW: 20000
TSX: 16500
GOLD: $1350
OIL: $65
CAD: $.80

The best I could do in the absence of a random number generator or a barrel full of monkeys...

This is tough year to predict (unlike the others :) ). I suspect a Trump bump might last the year but I also get the sense that a significant crash is in the cards within the next 2 years.

Did you mean 22520 for the Dow? Or are you predicting shock and horror?

I guess since I'm here now I might as well add some predictions too.
DOW: 22711
TSX: 13126
GOLD: 1000
OIL: 48.14 (I used west Texas oil, is that the right one?)
CAD: .794

I know these predictions make no sense, but that's what the random number generator told me to do!

Yes.
But the random number aspect will remove any satisfaction with a win!

Indeed, I did consider that, but went with it anyways. I don't feel bright enough to predict it myself! And if I win by some crazy chance, it will at least be entertaining.

It's interesting to see such a wide range for the value of the Canadian dollar!

I assume it's the prices quoted here: Yahoo Finance

DOW: 21,201
TSX: 16,789
GOLD: 1,234
OIL: 56.78
CAD: 0.7890

I recommend using the same precision as kcowan uses in his spreadsheet. It's a close contest, the extra places are needed to avoid a tie.

OIL is to 2 decimal places (56.78), CAD to 4 (0.7890).
