I have 3 questions about posting.

Anyone know how to cross out something on a post?

Also, put the person's name on a quote?

Also, attach wording to a url in a post instead of the url itself.

Thanks.

To put a line through a word: [s [/s (with closed brackets, because they won't appear here if I close them as an example), either side of the word to be crossed.

To Quote someone: Hit 'Quote' on their post and delete the unrequired text.

To attach wording to a url: insert text

A bit more info:

To cross some words:
[s]this will be crossed out[/s].

To put a person's name on a quote:
[quote="somebody or some paper"]quoted text [/quote]
(this will be shown as "somebody or some paper wrote:")

Finally, if you want to explain somebody else how it's done, you can check the "Disable BBCode in this post" checkbox and the tags will be presented as you've written them.

Here's a more comprehensive user's guide for phpBB-based forums that I customized for another forum. I also added sections on finding and going directly to new posts as well as other topics that might interest those who want to explore some of the more obscure (but useful!) features of the software.

RE: Signatures.

Is it by choice or because of a lack of choice that FWF uses the lastest signature of a member for ALL posts, past and present.

There are some good reasons either way but...

It's the way the phpBB software works. It minimizes storage.

Re: posting embedded links

The embedded link format is

Code: Select all

[url=www.xyx.xx]title[/url]
but fails when the link contains certain characters like ( and ). This can be fixed by substituting the ASCII hexadecimal equivalents from here with the hexadecimal equivalent preceded by %. For example, ( is %28 and ) is %29.

So

Code: Select all

[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Monday_(1987)]Black Monday[/url]
which doesn't work

Black Monday

becomes

Code: Select all

[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Monday_%281987%29]Black Monday[/url]
which does.

When editing one's post, how does one get the 'edited and time stamp'
added to the post ?

testing edit at 19:17, ..... I'll test again tomorrow

No need to test tomorrow. BTW, my apologies for not testing in the appropriate thread.

It's automatic, but I believe there may be a time delay after the initial posting to allow for semi-immediate 'adjustments'.

The time stamp appears only after someone adds a post below the one you are changing. Until then you can update as many times as you like and no time stamp will appear.

I believe editing is closed after a certain delay (24 hours?).

Yup, 24. But then no timestamps will appear either ;)

I believe there were 2 posts after the one I edited. After editing and 'submitting' the edited post appeared as a 'new' post following the other two.

When you began to edit the post, did you click on the Edit or Quote button? ;)

Actually, I think it's now 48 hours, thanks (cough, cough) to a certain inane bigmouth with a day job.

Just a beware.

I was going through some older threads recently and saw many Tinypic links that don't work.

This is from their FAQ:
How long are images and videos kept?

Images and videos is in your account will not be removed. Images and videos that are not associated with an account are kept until they have not been viewed for 90 days. After 90 days, they may be removed.

Have you figured out how to port anonymously posted images into an account that now sports a user name? I asked tinypic, and so far no response. Sigh.

If you right-click on an image you can usually save it on your desktop. You could then upload it from your own computer.
