Investment funds and investment counsellors must arrange for a separate party to physically hold the assets they manage on behalf of clients. This is normally done by trust companies, either independent or owned by the big banks. Custody fees are their charge for providing this service. You won't see the charge if you have a normal brokerage account, but would see it if you're high net worth have a "separately managed account."
One more for DRIPpers:
COD Effect - Clerk O'the Day
Occasionally processing of DRIP administrivia runs into the COD Effect where depending on the office personnel different persons do the same things differently. E.G. Royal Bank signature guarantees.
One person can send in 10 share certificates with the same guarantee. Eight are processed and two others are mailed back with notice the wrong signature guarantee was used.

Haha I love it. I'm Jewish so I'm sure I'll be using this one in the future.Bylo Selhi wrote:Vigorish is Yiddish slang originating from the Russian word for 'winnings,' vyigrysh."queerasmoi wrote:where does "vig" come from? Is it an abbreviation?
For all the stereotypes out there, what I do know is that many Jews were historically asked to handle money by Christians and Muslims due to religious beliefs, and simultaneously barred from many other professions. Then it repeated in North America when a whole generation of educated Jews were barred from conventional jobs, and started their own (successful) businesses. So if we're good at money, it's cause we had no other choice
