I bought a Samsung Blue Ray cd player which will turn my regular TV into a smart TV. Its regular price was $125 . I bought one at Costco for $90 because they had a $35 rebate program.kcowan wrote:The main advantage of a smart TV is that the manufacturer can update their software to improve the picture handling. Re: Shopping Bargains
When we bought our 50" Samsung smart TV last year, it included their (Blue Ray) DVD player as a bonus. We hooked that up to our dumb Panasonic LED in the bedroom.

Maybe not a great bargain but for $17.91 including tax in Bc you get the Blue Ray and a free movie pass.
To watch on Telus is $6.00 and a movie is $10-12 then $50 for popcorn and a coke.

Re: Shopping Bargains
I Don't know. But when the "paypass" (or similar) technology was integrated in my credit cards, I purchased 5 aluminium-based card protectors, like those, for a few dollars at the wallet/purse shop of my local mall. It works (put the card, within the sleeve, directly on the sensor, and nothing happens). You loose a second or two each time you pull the card out of the sleeve.Bylo Selhi wrote:Dumb question: In all the stories I've read about clandestine RFID readers the demonstration is done with a single card. If you keep multiple cards, each with RFID chip, in your conventional wallet, can a clandestine RFID reader discriminate among them? If not then why do you need an RFID-blocking wallet?

Re: Shopping Bargains
I made a small tin-foil sleeve that can hold 1 or 2 credit cards. I like to use it when I don't want to carry a wallet or anything bulky. Does it work? I don't know, should try it at a pay-pass self-checkout sometime.
I'm wondering if once I set off an alarm at The Source with it though. That time, no-one had left the store and I walked in by myself with the tinfoil sleeve. Within 5 seconds an alarm went off in the store, and an employee looked at the entrance-way and saw nobody leaving, then went to the back room and shut off the alarm. It was kind of funny, and I hoped to do it again, but other times it didn't happen again.

Re: Shopping Bargains
I had a chance to try it out. Tapped the card, twice, with the tin-foil on it and the payment didn't work. Removed the card from the foil and the payment worked first time. So the tin-foil sleeve worked.IdOp wrote:I made a small tin-foil sleeve that can hold 1 or 2 credit cards. I like to use it when I don't want to carry a wallet or anything bulky. Does it work? 5 Ways to Score a Deal Without Leaving a Store’s Site
Re end-of-season sales, from personal experience, sales on winter-related merchandise like outerwear, sporting goods, etc. usually start now. Apparently merchants reckon that if it hasn't sold by end of January it's not going to sell this winter. It's better to clear it at a discount than to store it in a warehouse for another year. (And they probably have all the Christmas returns/exchanges processed by now.) Discounts and inventory can vary wildly depending on the severity of the winter. The last couple of years, when winters were mild, I managed to snag bargains like a down parka for 70% off and snowshoes for 50% off. This winter's "polar vortex" has literally blown inventory out the door and with it many bargains.1. Shop the Sale Section
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be amazed at how many people skip the sale section of a site. This is especially effective when a store is transitioning between seasons and must clear inventory before restocking for the next trend. Look for a “Sale” or “Clearance” section in the site’s navigation for the lowest advertised prices. For bonus discounts, you can often apply coupon codes to sale items to save big.
If the site doesn't have a Live Chat function you can always call their 1-800 number. Use the same strategy, i.e. demonstrate your interest in the product, ask questions, express concerns about the price and your budget, etc.4. Ask for a Discount
Next time you are shopping online, look to see if a store has a "Live Chat" function. If there is one to be found, you'll usually find a link to activate it in the customer support section of the site. Stores advertise these chat specialists as experts there to help you make a decision, but they are really just salespeople in disguise. Use it to your advantage and make them sell you what you came to buy – for less.

Bought two pair of jeans on sale at a Wrangler outlet store in Florida. At the check out I was told if I bought 2 a third pair was free. The price of three worked out to $7.50 a pair.
When I got home I took them to a nearby alteration store to shorten and it cost me $10 each . Sign of the times when service costs more than the item price.China vs Canada.

Same at the VF outlet store in Reading, PA. Plus no sales tax on clothes in PA. Plus I happened to drop in on a Tuesday which was Senior's Day, so another 10% off. Almost worth the cost of driving down there and back.biker wrote:Bought two pair of jeans on sale at a Wrangler outlet store in Florida. Re: Shopping Bargains
The Atlantic has a piece about two websites that review products sold in the US and cite the "best" one for personal use by most people. Sweethome covers household goods like sheets, kitchen utensils and appliances. Wirecutter is tech.
For tech stuff like tablets where there's already an abundance of stand-alone reviews, they sort through the info already available. For other stuff they perform their own tests. Here's their write-up on wireless headphones, a matter of interest for several FWF members.
Apparently, each review cites -- and gives no credit for -- what the testers consider marketing-oriented frills with little/no value to ordinary users.

Thanks for The Wirecutter link Bruce. Used their advice for a blu-ray player purchase and enjoyed several more articles. Like that they provide links to other reviews and tests if the reader wants additional info.

Re: Shopping Bargains
New iPad will be announced probably in September or October (Christmas buying season).
Therefore, $100 is a fair bargain to get off the current-soon-old-gen iPad Air.
As for Apple Store service, they give you the same stuff whether you bought direct from them or not.
