Any recommendations for a moderately priced vacuum for use on mostly hardwood floors with some carpet, especially on stairs?

The FWF response level on vacuums sucks -- pun intended! See http://www.financialwisdomforum.org/for ... 84#p378884

Ah yes, that kind of fell flat didn't it P_I? I did mean to respond to that one long time ago but was too lazy to dig out the material on my current central vac system which I have found to be second to none in at least half a dozen systems I've owned over the years. It's called DuoVac, Canadian made, and sold by Dynamic vacuums on Elbow Drive. Style and type depends on house size and number of outlets (I have Signature). Better components and less cost than the so called Beams of the world.

As to the current request, it depends on amount of stairs, amount of carpet and hardwood you have. My central vac system above is a breeze to use in ~2000 sq ft, but if you don't have a central vac system and you have light duty requirements, a Consumer Reports Best Buy rated upright Hoover is as good as any. I used that kind in a townhouse of maybe 800 sq ft I rented in another city/country years ago. If all hardwood, then the new Swiffer is a decent possibility.
