Spudd - I recommend delaying the start of the contest to allow more members time to submit entries.

For comparison, the Bogleheads 2017 hedge fund contest is starting at 9:30 am EST on 6 Jan 2017.

kcowan is starting the 2017 Predictions Contest on January 16th at 9:30 am EST.

Perhaps you can synchronize the start with kcowan?

As a participant I would delaying the start so that more contestants could be found. Latecomers shouldn't be eligible for the fund name bonus.

I picked that date/time because it only loses 2 weeks at a time when everyone is making merry! Also trying to finalize 2016 results. And with the extra time, I would pick CFP for my third long. But I would expect the start values to be set at the new deadline.

Sure, we can extend. Let's give it till open of the market on Monday morning. Values will be set with Friday's close. (And one of my picks is already down 50% so this works for me, LOL.)

My three longs are up 11%, 8% and 4% year-to-date. January effect has been playing out as I hoped. But given the new start date, good performance in the first week is detrimental to my future prospects. Therefore, I decided to close the January Effect Fund and start anew.

Administrative:

- Consider changing the column N title "Total" to "Fund % Return" (implemented in the Bogleheads contest)

Info:

- The spreadsheet will rank the funds by selecting Column N "Total" (Fund % return), right-click --> Sort sheet Z --> A. This is a temporary filter for your viewing only. The spreadsheet owner can set a permanent filter, if desired.

Suggestion (implemented in the Bogleheads contest):

- Copy today's status (paste as value) to a new tab in the spreadsheet. If anything happens, you'll have a formal record of the opening price.

Spudd and LadyGeek, I suggest adding a query to your spreadsheets. This would be the first worksheet. It would show the portfolio names and returns sorted by best to worst using the latest prices. For the FWF spreadsheet, you would type the following into cell A1 of the new worksheet:

=QUERY(Sheet1!A1:N,ʺselect A,N order by N descʺ,1)

You may have to actually type the formula. Cut and paste doesn't always work for me.

Also, the spreadsheet would run much faster if you replaced all the Index(GoogleFinance formulas with something like VLookup.

I implemented the suggestions given (hid the initial status sheet because it's ugly and hopefully won't be needed), good luck all!

One more thing... The Bogleheads are suggesting to add a benchmark for reference.

In previous years, Norbert used Vanguard FTSE Canada Index ETF (TSE:VCE), as "I don't know and I don't care (Benchmark)".

Perhaps we can use the indexes directly (instead of a fund)?

Google finance has the indexes as:
- S&P/TSX Composite index (INDEXTSI:OSPTX)
- Russell 3000 (INDEXRUSSELL:RUA)

From the Bogleheads contest, Tanelorn has revised the spreadsheet to use Google Sheets' HTML view. It's fast!

All you need to do is replace the edit#gid=116780609 part with htmlview#.

The URL becomes:

Code: Select all

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kGExXcfB4GdnF-VaElmZxDpI9LjeHzxiUVd-sng-mAU/htmlview#
2017 Hedge Fund Contest Financial Wisdom Forum (HTML view)

You lose formula visibility, but it's good for a quick check on status.

Not sure I understand. Since you are a wiki editor, the best place to discuss and resolve this is Talk:FWF Contests or just edit the page itself to improve it.
