Do you have a source for that? Because when I searched, I found this with the date of 25th, not 24th:

Have you heard about Free File Friday?

If you are a taxpayer aged 60 and over, you too can prepare your tax return for free! To qualify for Free File Friday and prepare your tax return online at no charge, you or your spouse must be 60 years of age or over.

Simply log on to UFile ONLINE and start a new file (or open your pre-existing file if you already used UFile last year) on Free File Friday, February 25th, 2011.

Enter this code 543P292 in the Special Offers page found in your UFile program, located near the bottom of the QuikClik Navigator.

File your return whenever you are ready. Remember, you do not need to file your return on Free File Friday.

Having already entered the 24th on my Google calendar, I went and looked and Feb. 24 2012 is indeed a Friday.
Free File Friday, February 25th, 2011.
Indeed in 2011, the 25th was a Friday.

Me too. So I immediately emailed a raft of friends that the date was the 25th, unable to imagine that UFile could be less keen to get the word out than I.

Seems I believe everything I misread on the Internet.

Which has been the retail price in places like Best Buy in the past. Does that suggest misrepresentation in marketing? Or does it mean the retail price is going up this year?

I always saw it for 29.99 regular and 19.99 on sale. Anyway I just wait for the guaranteed 19.99 online sale and download it. I guess you could say 19.99 is the regular price and 29.99 is the suckers price.

There are 3 prices: 29.95, 19.95 and free. I think free applies to any returns that are less than $25k, or for any seniors who apply on February Free Friday. There is no limit to the amount of income a free senior can claim.

But the free is only for online filing. It would be free for some seniors I do returns for but I get 8 anyway so I do them on my local computer. In fact I don't think ufile counts them as a return but you'd still have to buy the software.

IANAE but I am pretty sure that Ufile does not count any under $25k returns in their total even if it is printed. When I did MILs final return in hard copy, that is what I recall.

Yeah sorry, I meant low income and not seniors even though they're both.

Free file Friday in February? What good is that? I am still waiting for T slips in early April.

A couple of years ago, I sent them an email asking why the software is $29.99 on the website while the Future Shop was selling it for $19.99. Buying it online means no CD, no packaging, no shipping, etc. so it should be cheaper. The response I got back from them was "retailers are free to set their own price".

OK, I now see that they have a "promotion" until January 9 (same price as Future Shop):

Any software I download, I recommend making a spare copy to a disc.. in event of a BSOD on a computer.

By registering on Free Friday, you get to complete and file returns any time of year (after you qualify). I submit April 30th and have submtted returns as late as June 15th.

Tax freeway is $10 for 20 returns. Or you can download for free (cannot print or e-file) if you just want to check your u-file numbers.

Any thoughts about ufile vs turbotax? I might consider filing my own taxes this year...I have farm expenses as well as income and pensions.

Bump.

Also an observation that may save you a loonie or two. If you follow that link and get to CheckOut you'll see that one of the fields they want you to fill out reads "Province." More importantly it doesn't read something like "Province of residence" or "Province for GST/HST calculation purposes."

If you experiment you'll notice that the province you select affects the amount of HST you're charged. You could choose to interpret the request for province as "Province you'd most like to be associated with for the purposes of this transaction." IOW this might be a good time and place to declare yourself an honourary Albertan ;)

Wow this is indeed a slippery slope. Grease me up Bylo.

(BTW I really appreciate your continual contributions on how to save money.)

Credit for the suggestion to use AB/YK goes to a poster on RFD. My only contribution was to provide the plausible interpretation of what "Province" means in this context. That said, "I'm a hacker, not a priest."

THOMSON REUTERS | Thomson Reuters Enters Canadian Tax and Accounting Software Industry With Acquisition of Dr Tax Software Inc.
Dr Tax is known in Canada for its DT MAX tax compliance software, used by more than 3,000 Canadian accounting firms, and for its UFile and ImpotExpert consumer software lines, which are sold online and through retail outlets. The company is headquartered in, and will continue to operate from, Montreal.
Don't know what to make of this announcement, either from the perspective of an end-user or as a Thomson Reuters shareholder.

Just installed UFile from BB. Windows 7 keeps asking me if I want the updater to make changes each time I run the program; I haven't been able to get rid of that yet, even setting the updater to admin security.

If I understand correctly, the Ontario Trillium Benefit which includes "sales tax credit", "Energy credit" and "property tax credit" will be paid monthly to eligible low income earners starting in July 2012.

Issue with UFile Plus:
The figures (2011 property tax) entered on the ON-BEN form are NOT being transferred correctly to the "Trillium Benefit Calcualtion Sheet". For example ON-BEN line 6110 (2011 rent paid),no entry but xxx.xx shows up on line 20 and yyyy.yy (2011 property tax) on line 6112 but not transferred to line 21 of "Trillium Benefit Calculation Sheet".

I've checked for program updates and confirmed it's the latest version.

Have you contacted UFile about this? From my experience they want to know, they'll respond quickly, and if it's a bug they'll address it.
