Makes sense.
Some people may question my choice. After all, it’s my money, so why not go to the grave with all $72 billion? But extravagance for its own sake has never particularly appealed to me. I already have everything I need: friends, family, a roof over my head, and enough cash to fill my 5,600-square-foot, multi-room, high-strength steel crypt several times over.

I have to agree. The U.S. appears to be chugging along nicely. Perhaps it's due to cheap money. Who knows. Either way, it'll be fantastic for a long time.

Warren Buffett: 'America's never been greater'
"America's great now - it's never been greater," Buffett said on Tuesday while speaking at Fortune's Most Powerful Women conference in Washington, D.C.

"Our kids are going to live so much better than we do now," Buffett said.

In good company today
Buffett’s portfolio takes another hit as Wal-Mart plunges
Billionaire Warren Buffett’s stock portfolio suffered another setback as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plunged after predicting profit would decline in its next fiscal year.
Wal-Mart fell $5.49, or 8.2 per cent, to $61.24 at 12:24 p.m. closed down $6.67 or 10.0% in New York. That translates to a one-day paper loss of more than $370-million $451-million for Mr. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which had about 67.7 million shares as of June 30. Berkshire first reported a stake in 2005, and Vice Chairman Charles Munger has lamented that his company should have bought shares sooner.
...
Wal-Mart’s decline adds to losses this year for Mr. Buffett, the second-richest man in the U.S. and a famed stock picker. Wells Fargo & Co., Berkshire’s largest holding, is down about 5.9 per cent this year. American Express Co. has fallen 18 per cent since Dec. 31 and International Business Machines Corp. lost 6.5 per cent. Berkshire slipped 0.4 per cent Wednesday, extending its fall for the year to 12 per cent.

How many Honda Civics is this?

Warren Buffett just lost another $833.7 million
Last October, IBM's sharp drop after earnings wiped just over $1 billion off Berkshire's books. This past July, another IBM weak quarter cost him more than US$700 million the next day.

What, if anything, can be learned from the above two posts? Is there any educational value in tracking day-to-day movements of individual parts that make up the vast holdings of Buffett and/or Berkshire Hathaway? Looks like media noise to me.

To me these seem to like typical actions of Mr. Market. Buffett is fond of stating that his favorite holding period is "forever", so I'd suggest that his reaction to the market movements of both Wal-Mart and IBM would probably be a yawn or perhaps he wouldn't even have noticed. Perhaps he'd use the price drops offered by Mr. Market as an opportunity to be greedy when others are fearful. We likely won't know if he took any action until the next time Berkshire Hathaway's holdings are reported.

Back in school, when I came across sensationalist headlines such as "so-and-so 'lost' $10 million in 2 minutes" (or "she pays $1 million in taxes"), I always thought that it would be amazing to have that much money to 'lose' (or pay in taxes) and not really sweat it.

After losing a Honda Civic in my 20s, I thought that I had finally arrived!

It's always nice to have goals, but I will only dream about being able to lose as much money as some of these investors. :(

Speaking only for myself, I think you've failed to answer the question posed about the educational value of the posts. Remember FWF's tagline, "Where investors meet for financial education and empowerment". Where's the beef educational value?

I'd go as far as to suggest that the two posts, and the articles they reference, about tracking day-to-day movements of individual parts that make up the vast Buffett holdings are at best clickbait and probably just plain old Outstanding Financial Pornography.

Personally the educational value for me is that long-term investors should strive to embrace the idea of 'losing' large amounts of money. Too many times, people look at poor short-term performance and post with the intent of implying that an investment 'bad' (simply based on price movement). This is short-sighted.

When articles claim that so-and-so 'lost' a lot of money within a short period of time, they should understand that successful compounding over long periods of time will always involve downtrends that involve 'losing' subsequently larger and larger amounts. And this shouldn't be perceived as a negative. It should be perceived as a positive.

Having said that, I think this idea would be too unconventional for the mainstream to adopt.

Each person must take whatever educational value presents itself, regardless of the source. Whether an individual believes that there is or isn't educational value, they are correct.

How To Optimise Warren Buffett’s Asset Allocation Advice
"...as far as static strategies is concerned, Buffett’s suggested allocation has a very low (although not the lowest) failure rate; a very high (although not the highest) upside potential; and provides very good (but not the best) downside protection when tail risks strike. Put differently, Buffett’s suggested allocation seems to provide a middle ground between the best performing strategy (100/0) in terms of upside potential and the best performing strategies (60/40 and 70/30) in terms of downside protection."

Unrealized loss on IBM: $2b

3Q net income: $9b

Insane.

Berkshire Profit Surges to Record $9.43 Billion on Kraft Heinz
The previous record for net income in a quarter was $6.4 billion in the three months ended June 2014, which was also driven by a one-time investment result. In that period, Berkshire recorded a gain tied to the exit of most of its stake in the former publisher of the Washington Post.

Not a big purchase for Berkshire. Just a trend in the same direction as Clayton, and HomeServices. It's a long term play that I think will pan out very nicely.

Warren Buffett buys Dallas’ Allie Beth Allman & Associates Realtors
One of Dallas’ top residential sales firms has been purchased by investor Warren Buffett’s growing real estate empire.

Allie Beth Allman & Associates, a 12-year-old company that specializes in high-end home sales, has been acquired by HomeServices of America Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate.

Allie Beth Allman, one of North Texas’ top residential firms, sold about 2,100 houses last year valued at $1.5 billion.

Time in the market beats timing the market. I hope we all live a long, healthy life.

Here's what Warren Buffett said when Tony Robbins asked him how he got so rich
"And he smiled at me and said, 'Three things: Living in America for the great opportunities, having good genes so I lived a long time, and compound interest."

I found this website to be a good place that gathers and aggregates a lot of the news and rumours surrounding Berkshire Hathaway.

It beats having to filter through Google News manually myself

Another megadose of pro-U.S. propaganda from Warren Buffett. It warms my U.S.-biased heart. Berkshire Hathaway forever.

Anyone on this board a Berkshire Hathaway employee through one of its subsidiaries?

You're eligible to enter for a chance to win $1 million every year for life!

The catch?

You have to select a perfect bracket for the Sweet 16 at the NCAA March Madness Tournament.

May the odds ever be in your favour

Highlights from Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting.
Warren Buffett wrote: There is "far more money made by people in Wall Street through salesmanship abilities rather than investment talent."

It's important to know what you can't do. We try to take swings in our own strike zone. "It doesn't take a genius to do it, but we've generally managed to avoid self-destructive behavior."
Warren Buffett: There Is No Bubble in Real Estate
Warren Buffett says now is a good time to buy a house, though not as good as it was four years ago. Still, Buffett says he thinks the chances of housing prices collapsing are very low.

“I don’t see a nationwide bubble in real estate right now at all,” says Buffett.

In Berkshire’s 2012 annual letter, Buffett recommending housing as an undervalued asset. Buffett said housing is not as good a deal as it was in 2012, but he didn’t think housing looked overpriced now either.

Not sure if I like this change in Berkshire.

Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Took Apple Stake Worth About $1 Billion
Berkshire held 9.81 million Apple shares as of March 31, according to a regulatory filing Monday from the billionaire’s Omaha, Nebraska-based company. The holding was valued at $1.07 billion at the end of the first quarter.

Berkshire also added to stakes in IBM, Deere and Visa
