National Post

Post by Jo Anne »

So, I was just at http://www.nationalpost.com , and noticed that I can read all of the articles there.

Did they change stuff so that the great unwashed unpaid subscribers could read the paper? When the heck did this happen?

Yes they did and a few months ago. Now it's almost worth what you pay for it ;)

That leaves only the Grope and Flail with some content behind the green door. Meanwhile the new Murdoch-owned WSJ is lifting its kimono even higher by exposing more of its famous "fair and balanced" editorial fleshcontent to those who can't afford to pay for their titillationbrainwashing.

OMG who knew? I'd never even tried! The Hamilton Spectator all-of-a-sudden became visible a while back, too. Thanks J :)

Been saying for a while the Post is not what it one time was. While the editorial content is fine the fiancial section has been gutted .
The Monday edition mite as well be done away with for all it's worth.
Lord Black must be dissapointd to see what it has become.
The changes of the past few months were not made to improve the paper but to save MONEY. Who they think they are kidding.

I don't know how this rag actually stays afloat given its dearth of advertising. I can only hope for its eventual death followed by the reserection of the Financial Post.

Another one sees the light.
The Atlantic.

From the NYTimes.
A Venerable Magazine Energizes Its Web Site
A year ago, The Atlantic’s Web site was, to put it gently, weak — in content, staff, traffic and advertising.

Today, with big-name bloggers and video, it barely resembles the same site, having evolved into one of the livelier places on the Web for public policy debate and news analysis. And the number of readers going to the site has quadrupled.

Readership will get another boost starting Tuesday, when TheAtlantic.com will abolish the fire wall that has allowed only subscribers to the print magazine to see most of its articles online. It will make its archive accessible, too.

Executives hope that a rise in traffic brings to The Atlantic, one of the nation’s oldest publications, something it hasn’t had in many years: a profit.
...
That's one good magazine I used to read on the web before they tried (and failed) to monetize web viewership.

WW (Don't throw anymore; hardly one extra minute available for reading)

The Economist seems entirely free now, as well.

It's time to show my gratitude by canceling my online subscription. Ditto for the Atlantic. :?

I already have the Post, Bylo. Do you have a free 60-day supply of anything else? :)

national post missing news?

Post by petfiora »

Noticed last few mornings mutual fund quotes missing in finacial section.
Some time back they done away with the monday mornings weeks dividend payments.
The financial section of the post is nothing like it once was.
Guess it's time to try the Globe.
They are gradually de-nutting the dam thing.
Any comments guys??

I used to buy it Saturdays from one of the mechanical librarians, but when they raised the price by $1 the other week, that was the end of that.

Some of the data stuff from it can be found by poking around these links:

I think that they desrve credit for their hard work. They've got some good writers. It's a tough business to make some money in. I understand that the Post's owners have a lot of debt, which might be bad news for the Post.

It's nice to subscribe to a newspaper that's on the brink of collapse.

For the last 3 years, I've paid $27/year to have the newspaper hand-delivered to my front door 6 times a week

I only buy it occasionally.

But I did receive the first ever edition and they gave us plastic ornament with a miniature front page embedded to commemorate the momentous occasion!

I am sure I still have it somewhere - Maybe in the Laundry room. Think the Antique Road Show might put a value on it?

Same here, I was a bit shocked by the $2.50 on the box. I already buy the Globe on Fridays and Saturdays, so I went and bought a Latte instead. :D

I'll sell you mine. It's got a picture of a thumbs up John Glenn pre blast off, plus stories on the YBM--Russian mob connection, King Ralph on uniting the right and Yelstin telling Da Boss to bugger off. You'll need to supply your own magnifying glass ;)

No wonder. 12x$2.50=$30. For 3¢ less "Subscribe to National Post and receive a $10 Purdy's gift card. Join today for only $29.97 for three months." IOW you get the weekday editions for free, delivered to your abode plus the $10 gift card. (Assuming you want to subscribe to the Notional Pest in the first place.)

Once you become an ex-subscriber, they call you every 3 months or so and try to entice you back with great deal offers, essentially giving you the paper for next to free. No wonder they are in trouble.

I eventually yelled at them after they called me twice in three days and told them never to call me again. It seems to have worked.

Just for the record, The National Post was the only newspaper implicating Teachers in the BCE scandal. All the great minds at the Globe (including Jacquie McNish, whom I usually respected) fell on their faces.
