I'm not sure it is fair to lump this in within this topic, but at the very least the logic is questionable.
I found this particular passage quite humorous.
The more this poor fellow attempts to justify what he is doing, the more apparent it becomes that he is on pretty thin ice which begs a question: Does he really know what he is doing or does he simply have enough information to be dangerous?
There is a lot of information and opinions on investing subjects circulating on the web and it seems to be growing each and every day as more and more folks take to DIY investing in one form or another. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find the wheat in amongst the chaff as these on-line authors can sound authoritative and very convincing and yet it's quite apparent that the depth of knowledge is lacking.
It's going to be very interesting indeed to see how DIY investors are going to fair collectively over the next 10-20 years versus those who are being directed by advisors of one sort or another despite the substantial headwinds that fees extract. The more that I read of what is getting "published", the more I can see why William Bernstein is questioning how successful DIY investing will be for the great majority.
I found this particular passage quite humorous.
On one hand, the author is saying that he can beat the market by stock picking and then he promptly turns around and says that he can't by virtue of wanting to buy an ETF for additional growth presumably over and above what he can achieve through stock picking. The main purpose of dividend investing is obviously to select the stocks you think will both outperform the market and pay some healthy dividends at the same time. The power of dividend growth over time should guarantee a nice and comfy nest egg too.
So why would I invest a part of my money into indexes? What’s the point of adding ETFs to a 100% dividend stock portfolio? The reason is simple; I want additional growth while not spending too much time working on my portfolio. I will still buy dividend stocks and continue with my core strategy, but will add some ETFs to my asset allocation

Good article Scott....I find it interesting that my former full time broker, retired early and I believe it was because most of the clients got tired of paying the huge fees and moved on. I roll my eyes when our friends talk about their portfolios with Investors Group, they don't even know what MER means, but oh well their advisor takes them golfing and out to dinner once a year.

In addition to that, note the disguished ad at the bottom of the article. Here's a screen shot in case the "ad" varies from view-to-view and the one you get is about day-trading:scomac wrote:I'm not sure it is fair to lump this in within this topic, but at the very least the logic is questionable...
Note that the sentence I highlighted talks about an S&P500 ETF because it's "diversified" while the "ad" for e-mail alerts touts QQQs.

Likewise with my cousin, who had me invited by his advisor to a dinner + presentation. Some years ago, as a novice CFP, I declined on opportunity to work for / with IG. Why? Couldn't recommend products that I personally wouldn't want (versus alternatives).sydney2 wrote: ... To be fair, the two terms are related, and replacing them with plain English would mean turning a single sentence into an entire separate document. It was a good program.
Unfortunately, the people who most desperately need to watch it and understand the lesson were watching Big Bang Theory instead.

Trump Tells Americans to Prepare For 'Financial Ruin'
Tuesday, 06 Nov 2012 12:14 PM
The United States could soon become a large-scale Spain or Greece, teetering on the edge of financial ruin.
That’s according to Donald Trump, who painted a very ugly picture of where this country is headed. Trump made the comments during a recent appearance on Fox News’ “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”
According to Trump, the United States is no longer a rich country. “When you’re not rich, you have to go out and borrow money. We’re borrowing from the Chinese and others. We’re up to $16 trillion in debt.”
He goes on to point out that the downgrade of U.S. debt is inevitable.
“We are going up to $16 trillion [in debt] very soon, and it’s going to be a lot higher than that before he gets finished. When you have [debt] in the $21-$22 trillion, you are talking about a downgrade no matter how you cut it.”
Ballooning debt and a credit downgrade aren’t Trump’s only worries for this country. He says that the official unemployment rate of 8.2 percent “isn’t a real number” and that the real figure is closer to 15 percent to 16 percent. He even mentioned that some believe the unemployment rate to be as high as 21 percent...
