CREA wants parents to help their kids buy homes by tapping into RRSPs
http://business.financialpost.com/real- ... heir-rrsps

""The federal government should allow parents who want to help their offspring with the purchase of a home to tap into their retirement savings, says The Canadian Real Estate Association, which also wants the maximum withdrawal limit bumped up by $10,000.""

These shysters even coined a new term for it. “intergenerational RRSP loans”

Ain't naked self interest a wonderful thing.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/cannabi ... -1.4467709
Vahan Ajamian, a research analyst with Beacon Securities Ltd., said the sudden drops in cannabis companies' stock prices could be explained by year-end profit taking.

"All these stocks have had a fantastic few days and months," he said. "People are likely looking to crystallize gains by the end of the year."
Doesn't make sense. If that's what you were doing, wouldn't you wait one day and book the capital gain in 2018? Maybe the alternative explanation is not as soothing to his clients?

Well, if they sold today (the 29th) it settles in 2018 so that's when the capital gain is taxable. That said, the term "year-end profit taking" is kind of loose, does it mean taking the tax hit for 2017 or does it mean taking the price available in 2017 ?

Cannibis stocks will be a big loser in 2018. They will be a distant second to bitcoins.

US stocks will likely run higher for another 11 years, Wall Street's Tom Lee says

Thomas Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, says Friday on CNBC's "Halftime Report" that he and the firm's technical strategist think stocks peak in 2029.

...

"Both [Fundstrat technical strategist Rob Sluymer and I] think it's more like 2029 is the peak of this equity market cycle and then, the S&P is 6,000 to 15,000," said Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, on CNBC's "Halftime Report" on Friday.

"So I think it's just important to be long-term oriented right now."

That is great news. I'll convert all my stocks in 2029 into RBBs and retire on a Caribbean island.

Better make it 2028. You wouldn't want to take too many risks with your market timing.

Thank for the suggestion. I actually did think about that, but they'll peak in 2029, so I figured early 2029 should be safe. Assuming TD has fixed its computer system by then. I also need to remember to order RRBs, not RBBs, or my broker will be confused.

He predicted that S&P 500 would peak in 2029 between 6,000 and 15,000. That's the difference between 7.0% and 16.5% annualized. What's up with that? I hate the lack of precision.

It will peak at 10,526 at 10:31 am on January 24, 2029.

The wonderful world of specialized ETFs never ceases to amaze.

The Inspire 100 ETF (NYSE:BIBL)

ETF description: "The Inspire 100 ETF tracks a market-cap-weighted index of large-cap US stocks, selected based on the firms proprietary definition of biblical values."

AdvisorShares Vice ETF (NASDAQ:ACT)

ETF description: "ACT is an actively managed fund that invests in US companies involved in alcohol-, cannabis-, or tobacco-related activities."

At a first glance, one would think that these two ETFs should have nothing in common.

Wrong!

The "bible" ETF and the "vice" ETF both have the same top holding: AbbVie.

Vice ETF: 6.76% in AbbVie
Bible ETF: 5.82% in AbbVie

Go figure.

Study Explains Why You're Smart But Not Rich

Post by Flaccidsteele »

Anecdotally I always assumed this conclusion to be true

So You're Smart, But You're Not Rich? This Eye-Opening New Scientific Study Tells You Why
"Our simulation clearly shows that such a factor is just pure luck," say the researchers.

The researchers actually looked at different events that had happened in people's lives and ranked them according to how lucky or unlucky these events were.

"It is evident that the most successful individuals are also the luckiest ones. And the less successful individuals are also the unluckiest ones," they said.

Wasn't quite sure where to put this so it's going here as I wanted to share it. Common wisdom is that the analysts do not necessarily call stuff correctly but look at the backtested results. Universe includes all Canadian stocks (minus REITS and utilities) with average daily volume of 30,000 or more.

It shows the return of 50 highest recommended stocks, rebalanced monthly. Amazingly it never underperforms the benchmark XIC which is shown in blue.

Conversely, and not shown here, picking the lowest recommended stocks gives the opposite return

I don't know what to make of it but it's surprisingly effective. I've now instituted a philosophy of selling a stock if it's analyst rating goes down AND if it's estimated earnings go down. It improves every single one of my backtests.

It looks like virtually all of the outperformance on that chart comes from the period of April 2016 to April 2017. Take that year out and the lines are similar, with more volatility on the recommended line.
