Welcome to finiki - The Do-It-Yourself Financial Webring Wiki.
As this forum has grown larger and more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to find authoritative information. There has been some consolidation of similar type threads into single threads but that just leads to huge threads. Because of the chatty nature of forums, threads contain huge numbers of off-topic posts which make mining for gold difficult.
In another thread, FWF Management indicated that the Report This Post icon should be used to report an inapproriate post. I wasn't aware of this icon, and it's not obvious to find it unless you happen to place your cursor over the icon. If using subsilver2, the icon is the red exclamation mark inside a box at the bottom right hand corner of a post, or with prosilver it's the red exclamation mark inside a triangle at the top right hand corner.
As an administrator of Financial Page, a bogleheads.org. affiliate blog, I thought it would be a good idea to familiarize our readership about the investment world here in Canada. Norbert Schlenker kindly consented to answer a few questions.
Here is the interview: Interview with Norbert Schlenker: The Financial Wisdom Forum .
Thank you, Norbert,
June 2020, Link updated as the Bogleheads blog moved -- Administrator
could you pssibly add this option, would maintain some civility plus allow us to not have to scroll through the inane prattlings of some postesr who think they are writing the next great Novel.
For those FWF members (and guests) using feed aggregators and readers such as Feedly , we are pleased to announce a new feature on FWF, web feeds (also known as syndicated or news feeds) using the forum's Atom feeds.
There are currently three feeds enabled on FWF, each offers different information that a reader may find helpful based on their forum browsing habits.
New posts feed - Feed with 10 most recent posts from all topics in Your Money...
I recognize there is a need for balance between topic proliferation and keeping things together, but IMHO sometimes topics become so large that they become a catch-all for a subject and I suspect that newcomers and long-time members stop reading/contributing to them.
Over the years I've noticed a trend towards omnibus, aka catch-all , topics here on FWF as members often try to re-use existing topics rather than starting a new topic for a new...
A Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah and (hmmm) Spectacular Solstice to FWF and all who sail in her. 2019 has been a messy and complicated year for me, so I haven't spent a lot of time posting on the forum. I lurked as and when I could and was happy to see so many of you contributing by making newcomers welcome and giving sound advice to your fellow members. Thank you to all the members who put in their two cents in 2019. FWF is nothing without...
4 minutes ago, repeatedly when trying to see new posts in the preferreds thread:

Ever since I started visiting the Financial Wisdom Forum (well before I registered), I have seen references to a watercooler forum but had never been able to find it. I was recently digging through the User Control Panel and saw that I could join the Watercooler please group. I thought that I had finally found a way to access this forum that I had been hearing about, but upon joining the group, the forum still does not appear in the board index....
I've noticed that forum links behave differently when I'm logged in and when I'm not. This is probably because I've set my personal forum display preferences to view up to 100 post per page.
The thing is that when I link to a previous post, the link that works for me is actually broken when I log out, because the viewing preference reverts to 25 messages per page.
As an example, the link to the previous post (.../viewtopic.php?f=30&t=122041...
I have set up notifications by e-mail when someone replies to topic I have subscribed too. However, I'm getting an e-mail per reply. In the e-mail I receive I see this, for example:
You are receiving this notification because you are watching the topic Who can consistently beat the market? at Financial Wisdom Forum . This topic has received a reply by since your last visit. No more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic.
I have received a press inquiry that seeks to profile the investment approaches of successful/knowledgeable investors in hopes of passing on useful information to readers of a national newspaper. FWF has a diverse membership with a wide range of investment philosophies and methods. If you would be interested in being interviewed or responding to questions, please PM me and I will pass on details to connect you with the writer.
Another year of educating Canadians investors has passed as FWF reaches its 13th birthday today.
Newer members who might not be aware of the background might want to read Happy 10th birthday FWF and perhaps the History of FWF .
Some statistics associated with today's milestone, Total posts 495313 • Total topics 16372 • Total members 8921. Perhaps we need a contest to guess when we'll reach the half million posts mark.
mess.png I tried to PM a message to someone with an attachment it seems to be in my Outbox. Does that mean it didn't go, how do I try to send it again, can that be done from my Outbox?
It appears our hosting provider has had some glitches this morning and you might have been receiving 500 Server Error or User financl1_phpbb already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections error messages.
Your admins have poked the hosting provider and things seem better now. 🤞
If anyone is still seeing the error, could they please try the following: Try pressing Ctrl+F5 to force a hard reload from the server. Unfortunately it...
Our brother forum, the Bogleheads, has gone missing. I thought this could be a nice topic for cross-maintainers to keep us informed, if they're willing to.
As is our usual practice, a number of 2017 specific topics have been locked and corresponding 2018 topics created for your use.
We would make one request this year, as has happened in previous years as well, the Clippings 2017 contains a number of sub-topics and follow-up posts that probably could have stood alone as their own topics. As an experiment for 2018, a 'Clippings 2018' has not been created and we'd ask...
We are pleased to announce that the board has been upgraded to the phpBB 3.2 feature release.
For those interested in the highlights from an FWF perspective:
Clever quotes
The most obvious change is a significant improvement in the quoting feature, nicknamed clever quotes . Quoted posts now show links to the post author and the quoted post, and the time and date of the quoted post. This new information provides a handy reference and...
Was hoping this topic wouldn't be need in for 2017, but ...
If you depend on email Notifications (i.e. for new Private Messages), our hosting provider is having problems with outgoing emails so they are currently being generated but not sent out. They are aware of the problem and working on a resolution.
I saw the indicator 1 that I had a private message waiting. When I clicked on private messages, the website simply took me to the forum index page. What's more, the indicator disappeared, so now I have no idea who sent or even if I received a PM. Are there issues with this right now?
After SH went down this week, i had a look around for another forum that has more insight into dividend stocks and fundamentals, rather than the bashing and bs that goes on there at stockhouse.
So far this appears to be a far superior forum for serious investors. Looking forward to making some $$$ with the folks here.
I am close to retirement and live in beautiful British Columbia... also known as BC , short for Bring Cash.....
There are a good variety of forums, but it isn't clear where personal finance topics that don't fit into the categories should go. E.g,. ones about banking like a recent question of mine.
I think such posts are on topic here but they don't have an obvious home. Perhaps the Under the mattress board's scope should be expanded to include them?
Happy 10th Birthday FWF and thanks the the founders and all those who have contributed to make FWF arguably one of the best Canadian financial websites.
A decade ago, seeing a window of opportunity to help Canadians, the original FWF gang of four , Bylo Selhi, Norbert Schlenker, Shakespeare and yielder were working very hard on building a new financial discussion forum, to be called the Financial Webring Forum (FWF), and now known as the...
Not including sweat equity, what is the approximate yearly dollar cost of running FWF? I'm interested because I was in a discussion about hosting/etc for a similar (but somewhat less traffic) forum and wondered what the cost was.
On Saturday March 11, 2017 around 9 AM Eastern Time (ET) we will change Remember me sessions so that they will last up to one year on FWF. This will affect only users who select the option to Remember me on the login screen on a particular computer or device and don't revisit FWF from that device within a year.
Users who do not check Remember me will not be affected by this change. You can log out sooner by clicking the Log out button in the...
We'd like to take this time to remind everyone about password strength and security. We have recently added functionality that will show users how strong (or weak) their password is as they type it into the password field when creating or updating their account.
There are two main features you will see: The Password field changes colors from red (weak) to green (strong) as the user types in a password.
The Password strength is labeled as...
[quote= Over here , Norbert Schlenker ] Can you make it 100 for full forum styles and 25 for Artodia styles?
I wish. There is only one global setting. Ideally, this parameter - and topics per page in forum view - would be settable by individual members. A MOD is available to allow this but we hate moving off stock versions.
Some good news, I think. With phpBB 3.1, it has become possible to offer the ability for individual members to control...
For those FWF'ers who also frequent the Bolgeheads® forum , you may have noticed the site has been unreachable since yesterday afternoon. The FWF admins and the BH admins are in regular contact and I've reached out to them for an explanation. The site is down because Comcast has an outage in the Miami area where the forum server is located. The server is fine but there's nothing the server admin can do until Comcast fixes it's outage that our...
The instructions are straightforward in the FAQ, but I checked every tab in the UCP and there is no section for me to add/edit a signature.. Is anyone else having this issue..?
As you probably noticed, the appearance of the forum has changed. The forum software has been upgraded to the new feature release of phpBB, v3.1. This version contains a number of new features, all of which we're sure you'll enjoy discovering.
Here are some of the highlights ... The prosilver board style becomes a responsive design that provides a modern and unified experience across all your devices, including desktops, tablets and...
Logged in FWF members who check their User Control Panel->Usergroups see the standard phpBB message: Usergroups enable board admins to better administer users. By default you will be placed in a specific group, this is your default group. This group defines how you may appear to other users, for example your username colouration, avatar, rank, etc. Depending on whether the administrator allows it...
I'd like to invite Bruce in as the first editor. We're not quite ready yet but we'll need a chat area since we can't use this area. Another hidden forum - Finiki Wiki
Today's maintenance was to update the forum software for some security fixes intended to harden the software against potential attacks.
Unfortunately the update contains another maintenance fix that break the ability to perform wildcard searches, they'll return with the message You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards. We...
We are currently trying to figure out how to attract more people like you to FWF. We have agreed that the webring concept is no longer hip. Yet you were drawn here by two leading members of the webring (bylo and shakes).
We have concluded that finiki is the real initial draw. So we would really appreciate your comments on that.
On my PC, iPhone, and Andriod I have to keep logging back in. I suspect this might be due to switching ISP, as it's a satellite service and I believe it doesn't have a static IP address. Or is something going on with the forum? Other sites I visit seem OK.
I seem to have lost the ability to quote a previous post. Also have to log in every time I open it up despite ticking the remember me button. What am I doing wrong?
Our hosting provider suffered a significant network outage this afternoon, knocking our sites offline for approximately two hours. Hopeful that they've got the problem resolved, but our fingers are crossed.
Looking for some feedback on which of the search boxes the membership uses.
For prosilver board style users the choices are: Google Search or Native Search or Advanced search. For subsilver2 board style users the choices are: Google Search and Advanced search.
Please indicate which one you primarily use. It would also be helpful to understand why you pick one over the other choices.
We've enabled a feature in the forum software that allows the Your Money ... forum category listing to not only show the subforums with the category, but now it will also show active topics in the subforums will be displayed under this category. One of the benefits of using this view is the 'Mark subforums read' link that will allow you to mark all topics in all the subforums read in one easy step.
