Welcome to finiki - The Do-It-Yourself Financial Webring Wiki.
As this forum has grown larger and more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to find authoritative information. There has been some consolidation of similar type threads into single threads but that just leads to huge threads. Because of the chatty nature of forums, threads contain huge numbers of off-topic posts which make mining for gold difficult.
What software do people here use to post images? I see from the forum discussion that the image must already exist on the internet so that the URL may be addressed. That presupposes that if the picture does not exist in a newspaper or magazine etc. that a personal picture etc has been uploaded to some website. I was going to register for TinyPic but I keep seeing posts on the forum where it says, for TinyPic, Image removed.
For some reason, when I log in, I get placed in the Mobile Version. Is there a way to make Full version stick? It always used to. Maybe I changed some setting?
When I log on from Playbook, even then, i would rather be in Full version. Software seems to sense I am on a mobile device and sometimes puts me in mobile version.
Just read this article and I am very worried about my balanced etf portfolio...I am 51 and have 8 yrs to retirement. Thinking about a fee based fp or switching to mawer balanced mutual fund. Feedback is greatly appreciated. Tks
Puzzled as to why the above quote did not format normally in Zeno's post.
I'm addressing this message to the forum's general admins or mods.
I've just tried to send a PM to another forum member but the message doesn't seem to get out of the Outbox folder. I would expect the msg to get sent instantly, unless some of the new forum's policies got changed?
Btw, I tried the same thing with the administrator as intended recipient, and the behavior is the same i.e. the Outbox folder is now showing 2 unsent messages....
This isn't a frequent issue, but once or twice I've noticed users who's threads have been locked, or who otherwise didn't get the type of response they were looking for on bogleheads, simply repost the topic on our forums.
Do we have any rules regarding this type of behavior? Is it best just to ignore, or attempt some sort of reasoned response?
Last year, Financial Webring Ltd. implemented a PayPal donation functionality -- which has received tremendous support. We had some technical issues this fall and had to temporarily suspend the ability to accept donations. The issues have been resolved and donations via PayPal are again possible.
Financial Webring Ltd. aims to provide collaborative education on investment and money management topics to do-it-yourself investors. We are not a...
Sorry if this has been asked before; a quick search didn't turn up anything.
I would like to request/suggest that the restriction on editing old posts be removed. I understand the logic behind preventing the wholesale change or removal of information once it has been cataloged, replied to, relied upon, etc. However, when I find a factual error in an old post of mine, I would like to be able to correct it, in case someone finds that post in the...
Forgive me if this is explained elsewhere. Is there a way I can download or copy an entire thread of this forum when it spans multiple pages? There are a couple discussions I'd like to have available on my computer for future reference, rather than access online. How to best do this?
Not exactly new news for those who've followed other forum posts but hopeful to reach a wider audience, Improving the wiki reader experience | Financial Wisdom Forum .
We are trying to gain some understanding of how the members navigate through the forum to read posts. Please help us out by answering the poll question. Feel free to provide any additional comments.
We are pleased to announce the pending roll-out of support for mobile devices, via Artodia: Mobile and SEO .
Artodia:Mobile offers:
Automatic mobile device detection. There is no need to change your Board preferences .
You will notice a button/link labelled Switch to mobile style or Switch to full style above the footer. You can use this link to over ride the automatic device detection.
If you click link to switch to mobile (or full) style,...
Shouldn't there be a limit to how many posts a new member can make in their first 24 hours of existence on the forum? I don't know what, if any, the limit should be but I'd suggest something less than 17. :D
Of course content is more important than sheer post count but no automated way to assess that AFAIK.
For those who missed Peculiar_Investor's post to obtain reader feedback: Subject: November is financial literacy month
...Wait, there is more. As part of Wikipedia's effort to engage readers in the assessment of article quality, they developed an Article Feedback Tool (AFT).
Clearly finiki could benefit from some reader (and editor) engagement. finiki is currently small-scale. It currently has a limited and unknown readership, and very...
Management will be implementing a minor upgrade of v3 software Monday April 19th at 10pm MDT (midnight for y'all in Eastern zone). The forum will be unavailable for 15-30 minutes during that upgrade. While we do not expect any issues or problems with this minor software upgrade, please report any new/unusual problems you experience in this thread. Thank you.
Keeping spammers off the forum is one of the moderators' jobs and I think we can all agree that they are - and thank them for - doing a great job.
99% of spam comes the forum's way these days via what are called spambots, automated scripts that look for forums running particular software or versions thereof, and then submit automated registrations of new users with randomly generated usernames and temporarily valid email addresses. These...
I think it is common practice for login pages to issue a statement such as invalid username OR password after a failed login. However, in the case of FWF's login page, a failed login will tell you whether you entered an invalid username, or entered a valid username but an invalid password.
I don't think this is a huge issue, but determined hackers might have an easier time getting unauthorized access with this setup. Maybe the admins might want...
The shareholders of the corporation which owns this forum have chosen new management. The new executive consists of four long time forum members - AltaRed, parvus, Pickles, and (one holdover from previously) Norbert Schlenker - who are responsible for the day-to-day operation of this forum, finiki, and the Ring itself.
The new management will discuss where we go from here and apprise members of any changes as decisions are made. Significant...
You may have noticed the reduced participation at FWF. One reason for this, in any public forum, is when a small group of insiders talk to each other in code, ignoring everyone else.
I have no problem whatsoever about use of stock symbols in **Company Specific** threads. The symbols are in the Subject lines and should be obvious in discussion below.
What I object to is the use of stock symbols in generic threads like What did you buy ... and...
I am sorry to introduce this as a new thread, however my password has been compromised - or mucked up - and I can't find a link to renew or change password . I do get multiple digit new passwords that to renew contact however no one would remember those passwords.
I intend this message for Moderators only. Where is the link to change password ?
We value your contributions and support in our mission to educate and help investors in making informed financial decisions on their own. To that end, we may periodically survey you about how well FWF is accomplishing that task. Please be assured that your replies will be held in strictest confidence and your information will not be shared outside of the FWF management team.

Would something like Investing FAQ for the Bogleheads® forum - Bogleheads be helpful on finiki? My thinking is it could be used to provide a starting point for newcomers to our sites to some of the nuggets of information buried in the thousands of topics in the forum.
If such a finiki page was created, what are your three top topics that you'd suggest to be included?
I don't know if it's just my iPhone, but in the last couple of days some boxes and icons have a appeared on this forum that wasn't there before. Certain texts appear in larger fonts and an orange colour. Its almsot looks like a Halloween themed FWF
The following is a PM that I wrote to yielder last week. He asked me to post this verbatim to this thread. I just got home late this evening and haven't had much of an opportunity to anymore than scan this thread. I'm not sure how it fits into the discussion to date, but here it is none-the-less.
We are going to go slowly with the rest of the forum. It may be that having no soapbox improves the signal to noise ratio enough that we can more or...
I'm not sure what's really involved, but any chance Tapatalk support can be added to the forum? A few forums are using it and it's great on a smartphone.
The past few weeks I've noticed a slowdown in fwf. When I click on a link the status bar says something like waiting for fwf.com . This only happens about 50% of the time and not with other websites. Right now (July 8th 7:00 am) it is consistently slow.
This website is owned by a shareholder group of FW Forum members and administered by a small dedicated group of volunteers. The shareholders chip in small amounts of money each year to keep the forum going, pass muster with the relevant regulators and tax authorities, and pay the ongoing bills. Not a big deal really. Still, some of you have offered, from time to time, to contribute to the upkeep of the forum. We have always been quite grateful...
Logs indicate that, for the past 24 hours or so, the forum has been under attack by hackers who are attempting to login to existing forum ids. (This is not related to the response time problems we are seeing currently.) There is no pattern to which ids are being attacked. We can see failed login attempts to founders' ids and to those who joined last month; to those who post often and those who have never posted; for members whose ids begin with...
As Management has announced there are some enhancements coming. To implement them the forum will be off-line tomorrow evening, Wed. Nov 23, at about 11 PM EST (9 PM MST). We expect the outage to be around 30 minutes. For those with Log me on automatically each visit set may find they need to login again as we're resolving a cookie issue.
We believe the changes will be self-evident, although Management provided a hint. Should you encounter a...
Would it be possible for a moderator to dust off Quicken & Currency from the stacks and put it in Financial Webring Forum • View forum - Under the Mattress: Protecting Your Money where there's another unrelated Quicken topic.
I'm finally getting around to using the USD side of my TDW account, which leads to how to get Quicken to handle the journal transactions, some involving purchases 10 years ago (buy and hold). I'd like to follow-up on the...
I accept and acknowledge your rules. Two questions
l. When I want to post a reply , why is the subject not automatically filled in? I think this would make sure it goes to the proper forum.
2. For what ever reason, I don't find your search very helpful. i.e I typed in Hearing Aids and it produced numerous posts which had nothing to do with the subject. Consequently I started a new post. I was very pleased to see it appear in an old post which I...
Someone on Bogleheads asked for an explanation of the post icons used by the forum software. This isn't described in any of the official PHPBB documentation as far as I can see. I did find the following list via Google. New users may find this useful.
[quote= Icon Descriptions or Legend ]Two general points
- Red/orange icons are unread items, blue/grey are read
- A star on any topic means you have posted in it
Two problems getting a lot of ink in both and are that there are now too many forums and, as a corollary, that the forum's index page is too long.
Having thought about it a little, I wouldn't phrase the criticism as too many . For me, it boils down to The way I navigated in the old forum won't work now. I'm not trying to put words in anyone's mouth. That's the way I feel when I use the new forum.
Section 329 of the Canada Elections Act states: No person shall transmit the result or purported result of the vote in an electoral district to the public in another electoral district before the close of all of the polling stations in that other electoral district.
No one may post, at FWF, results or links to results before 10 p.m. EDT on May 2nd. Even though the Act does not apply to websites or broadcasters outside of Canada & some...
When I logged in this morning the fonts are so tiny I can hardly read the script. Maybe I hit a wrong key or something, but other websites look normal.
In this thread c emptor makes this allegation:
This can be taken as a personal threat since you might very well might have access to my personal information here and since you might know someone at the CRA.
The allegation appears to be gratuitous or purposely inflammatory. Regardless, Management wishes to remind all members of this point in the Forum Rules
Private information you give us when you become a member, e.g. a valid email address,...
I'm getting out of my sick bed to pose a couple of questions which I hope will produce constructive discussion. I'll be interested to read what you have to say when next I'm compos mentis.
In both Jo Anne and pmj say that they dislike the sub-forums. ghariton and scomac then add that the added number of forums makes (their habitual method of) navigation difficult, a critique which would apply to sub-forums as well.
Public and private discussions with our members have resulted in some good suggestions about realigning the various fora. We hope the new setup is to your liking.
We know you're not shy. Comments and suggestions are always happily received in the Administration forum.
Doesn't look like the option is available to the poster, so would it be possible for the default on the board be that when a link is clicked on the link is opened in a new window? It's just my preference. Sometimes when I read through a board I like to click and open things I intended to review but not review right away, I want to continue reading the original board. By having the link open in a new window I am able to do that.
