Welcome to finiki - The Do-It-Yourself Financial Webring Wiki.
As this forum has grown larger and more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to find authoritative information. There has been some consolidation of similar type threads into single threads but that just leads to huge threads. Because of the chatty nature of forums, threads contain huge numbers of off-topic posts which make mining for gold difficult.
I realize that there will be a wide variety of viewpoints on this. Yes it often makes sense to find an existing topic when you want to discussion something, particularly particular companies (stocks) or ETFs.
Yes, topic drift happens, often. Sometimes Omnibus topics make sense, sometimes they don't. Case in point is the Computer problems topic that's run for 14 years and counting. Pretty much every problem ever related to a computer has been...
Do you like to customize your experience here on FWF?
Did you know that the User Control Panel (UCP) allows you to alter personal preferences, manage posts you are watching, send and receive private messages, and change the way information about you appears to other users. To view the UCP, click the User Control Panel link that appears after logging in. FYI, visually the link is somewhat hidden in the dropdown menu under your username in the...
Greetings. The purpose of this thread is to allow new posters to introduce themselves if they wish, giving as much - or as little - background as they want.
Posting on this thread is entirely voluntary - but, if you do wish to post, thank you and welcome to the Financial Wisdom Forum (FWF)!
The wiki used to have an article feedback tool that allowed anyone to offer feedback or suggestions. Unfortunately it had to be removed when it became unsupported.
Hence this topic. If you are not an editor on finiki, the Canadian financial wiki then please use this topic to provide any feedback on an article or suggest an idea for a new article.
Recent activity on the wiki shows up on the Recent changes page and on New pages .
Our board server log files contain a number of instances where emails to members for notifications are getting bounced because the member's email address is no longer valid.
We would appreciate if members would check in their User Control Panel, Profile tab, under Edit account settings to make sure the Email address shown is correct and valid.
This is an organized digest of another thread which has been deleted. This thread will be left open for posting so that additions may be suggested by forum members. Incorporation of suggestions is at the discretion of the moderators and, unlike other parts of the forum, messages with suggestions will be deleted (after moderator review) to keep this thread easy to read.

I have notifications on for Someone replies to a message to which you are subscribed (see attached).
A topic that I've created I'm automatically subscribed to (see attached).
But notifications don't appear when someone replies - for example the one Convert USD... has a couple replies but there are no notifications (see attached).
Earlier today we added functionality to the board software that changes how quoted material is displayed. Excessive quoted material now gets contained into a box and a scroll bar will appear as needed.
This evening's software update brings a tweak to this functionality. Behind the scenes I have been working with the developer to add an option to give the user control on whether or not they want to have quoted materials to within a scrollable...
This evening's software update brings new functionality, topic preview which displays a short excerpt of text from the first post in a tooltip while the mouse hovers over a topic’s title for around 1 second.
Topic preview in action.png
It has an user option allows users to decide whether or not they want this functionality. The setting is in your User Control Panel (UCP) in the Edit display options section. The default value is Yes.
This evening's software update brings new quoting functionality to assist members quoting material from previous posts. There are two additional ways to quote a previous post.
Select some part of a previous post
When you select some part of a previous post, a floating button Quote quote-left appears near your cursor as shown in the following screenshot.

When you click the Quote quote-left you will be taken...
The is a repost of today's blog article Shakespeare’s Canfinancial site – Financial Wisdom Forum .
The home page of Shakespeare’s Primer has this Preface:
This Primer has not been updated for several years, as my current writing efforts are focused on finiki, the Canadian financial wiki . Some of the articles of which I am the principle author and which can be thought of as supplementing or replacing articles in this Primer can be found on my...
I have been thinking about a way to honour Shakespeare who helped me and many others along our journey. I know there is a option to donate to FWF but is there any appetite to set up something we can contribute in Shake's namesake? Either that or contribute to a charity(?) in his name?
Couldn't find anywhere else to put this and since I was feeling kind of maudlin I thought I'd start a new thread. I'm sure others will feel the same way from time to time and may wish to add their own thanks to the founders and mainstays that remain.
I hit a financial milestone today and while it is modest it meant a lot to me and some of it is due to this forum and it's present and past participants.
Today I managed to shift around some of my...
Hey All,
Still new to the board.
I am trying to searching for a string of words such as total return or best screener .
The instructions in the advance search don't reference using quotes and are not working when I test them.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
There are some behind the scenes projects underway and they have reached the point where we need a dozen or more beta testers to help with some further testing to help guide us on whether or not the projects should move forward.
If you are interested, either reply here or PM me.
Our wiki, finiki, the Canadian financial wiki celebrates its 14th birthday' on February 14, 2023. As part of the celebrations we are pleased to announce several important changes and improvements have been made. The blog post finiki’s 14th “birthday” celebrations captures all the details, including screenshots of the key new desktop updates.
A new look and feel
The wiki's Main Page look and feel has remained unchanged since it last...
We are pleased to announce an improvement in how images can be posted on the forum, either via attachments or linked from external sites. There are two parts to the improvement.
We have upped the limits on the sizes of allowed images to 1366 (width) x 768 (height) px . In case you are wondering, these are the dimensions of the most common desktop screen size in North America.
In addition, attached images will now be displayed full size...
Most FWF'ers know that the board's search functionality leaves much to be desired.
Unfortunately the recent software update was intended to have improved phpBB native search performance. That might be true, but unfortunately it has introduced a significant bug .
When searching you will always get Search found 1 match and one page of search results which I've found show more than one match.
We are announcing the retirement of the BBCode (also known as a tag) here on FWF. It is being replaced by a new and improved method that allows media content from external sites to be embedded in forum posts and PMs, using the BBCode, or from simply posting a supported media URL.
What does this mean and how does this change things when posting?
The new BBCode appears as the television (i.e. Media Embed button) when posting as shown in:

For those that might not know our history we started our as a webring . In 2014, we Financial Wisdom Forum (FWF) and made some significant changes . It is now time to retire the last vestige of our webring heritage, the ranks that are shown in member profiles.
We have introduced new, more modern images and changed our rank naming. There are now three member ranks, down from five (or perhaps six 1 ). There are also a few 'special ranks' for...
The FWF administration crew is highly skilled at the technical aspects of operating Financial Wisdom Forum (FWF), this discussion forum and finiki, the Canadian financial wiki , if we do say so ourselves.
However we freely admit that our graphic skills are only slightly above rudimentary. We can do the basics. For example, our favicon meets the minimum standard to be used across all browsers. Technically, what users perceive as one icon is...
Back in 2016, Around the Watercooler became an optional, opt-in , forum. Newcomers might not be aware of this, and some long-time members have probably forgotten about it. In light of current events, a reminder to all seems appropriate.
Watercooler is our ONLY forum for any and all discussion of Politics, religion, controversial events, rants and gossip. The objective is to have the 'potentially controversial' topics in Watercooler and give...
Hello all. I'm new to FWF and would like to message a member about a topic that hasn't had a posting in almost two years. I'm planning to move my tax residence from Canada to Italy on a 7% flat tax regime for retirees and I was hoping to benefit from their experience with same. I first need to private message an administrator for permission to have access to private messaging. Catch-22. So here I am. Help? Thanks!
From my perspective readers and members are best served if the Subject (Topic) reflects the discussion so they can choose whether or not to read the topic.
Topic drift is inevitable, but I would also caution posters to remember that not all members and/or lurkers read each and every topic and post. The further off-topic a post becomes, the more chance someone actually interested in the post...
In light of the some of the recent discussions about the role of Around the Watercooler forum, the management team decided to make some changes in the ...and Your Life area. You might have already noticed some of these.
Community Centre is a consolidation of existing topic areas. The focus is non financial topics: autos; computers; entertainment; gatherings; hobbies; sports and travel. The Plugged In and DIYers at Home and Abroad forums were...
The FWF Board rules and specifically the Terms of service have been updated. We are introducing a new rule with regard to Usernames (accounts) , which states: Usernames (accounts)
Usernames must be inoffensive, in accordance with all other forum policies, and not misleading. Examples of usernames that do not meet these requirements would be any that include profanities, rude/sexist/racist comments, the names of real people other than yourself,...
Apple and Google are blocking access to certain groups and sites. That means the death of those podcasts and apps. I certainly agree that people and groups that advocate, incite and promote criminal activities should be blocked. It looks to me that some of the actions are much broader . Let's be clear that between Apple and Google they a monopoly on social communications. If they shutdown content based on something...
Two minor tweaks and improvements to announce as we close out 2020.
Back around the beginning of December and without fanfare I made some improvements to our logos.
Executive summary:
I've update our logos, the FWF logo and also the small finiki link logo to SVG format, improving their appearance. The logo on our your wiki, finiki, the Canadian financial wiki also was changed to SVG format at the same time.
Google and other major web players have been signalling over the past year or so their desire to move to Secure your site with HTTPS .
Your admins are pleased to announce that effective this morning, the forum and the wiki have both been secured with HTTPS.
For the non-techies in the audience that means:
The URL prefix is changed from http:// to https://
Your browser should be showing a padlock icon (or other indicator) to the left of the...
Even when I check the 'remember me' button at login, it does not remember me and I have to log in each time I access the forum. This is only today that it has happened. ?
Did you know that there are some 900 lonely and possibly neglected topics that have never received a reply? If you are logged in, check out (found under the Quick links menu).
Clearly there are many of the older ones that are outdated or not worthy of discussion. However if you refine it to Unanswered topics in the past year , there may be some topics worthy of discussion.
Perhaps you saw the topic back when it was posted but were occupied...
I realize that members use or at least consider the FWF homepage. Or maybe
But in reality our 'official' homepage is and we've got a low volume Blog – Financial Wisdom Forum . We expect those who might be discovering us for the first time might land there and hope to interest them in exploring what we have and hopefully get them to join our community.
This morning We have done a make-over – Financial Wisdom Forum .
As our latest blog article Shakespeare’s Primer has a new home – Financial Wisdom Forum says,
One of the founders of the Financial Wisdom Forum (FWF), known as Shakespeare, made an announcement at the beginning of November about The End of Shakespeare’s Primer .
We are pleased and honoured to announce on behalf of the Management team that FWF has agreed to take over hosting of the materials. So this isn’t “The End of Shakespeare’s Primer”,...
We are pleased to announce that the board has been upgraded to the phpBB 3.3 Feature Release.
There have only been minor changes to the user interface and features that a keen eyed observer might see. We expect that many of you probably won't be able to notice any difference.
For the most part this upgrade was about getting the underlying components and frameworks to a more modern base, which should result in some performance improvement....
