Welcome to finiki - The Do-It-Yourself Financial Webring Wiki.
As this forum has grown larger and more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to find authoritative information. There has been some consolidation of similar type threads into single threads but that just leads to huge threads. Because of the chatty nature of forums, threads contain huge numbers of off-topic posts which make mining for gold difficult.
Some of the recent posts seem to me to have advanced the ball a bit.
Help advance the ball further with Honest and Informed Posting . 8715 members, 136639 honest and informed posts.
[This appears to be an elaborate ruse. Posters have been warned. While we rarely ban members, members who do this kind of shit disturbing in their first post will be banned. This member has been. - ModeratorA]
Anyone willing to put in a $0.02 about what happened to all the TWB threads on this issue (and others) that were tranferred here but now seem to have been removed? I believe that Norbert has confirmed that they are not here. Am I having another bad dream?
We moved a few hundred threads from the second and third incarnations of TWB and they are all still here (e.g. the oldest is this one , I believe).
I know that it is possible with the forum software to put a person on my Ignore List , but it would be very useful to me to be able to mark a whole discussion (thread) as IGNORE. I realize that there is nothing requiring me to read each thread. But there are some thread's that I have no interest in, but other do and the thus the thread stays active and is indicated as having New Posts.
For Usenet, newsreaders have this feature as a standard...
Most of you will have noticed the pictures that can appear below an individual's ID on the left of the screen. This picture is called an avatar , and is controlled from your profile screen . At the bottom of the profile screen, the following restrictions are given:
Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80...
We have an intractable problem. We have been discussing it privately off and on for ages and cannot agree about how to proceed so we are consulting the membership. We therefore ask for your thoughtful opinions on the issue(s) raised in the questions below, in the hope that we can all come to some agreeable consensus.
a) Do you feel squelched by our announced intention to actively moderate this forum to deal with racist, homophobic, misogynist,...
... The risk for loss is infinite (a stock can just keep going up and up and up), but the risk for gain is limited (it can only go as far as zero). So you have to weigh in that factor. Amen. Below is a Bigchart of Cott Beverages (CA:BCB) which in the early 1990s my broker said was overvalued and would crash. So we shorted it. I lost about $15k in all as I watched it climb that mountain. Never shorted again. Never took advice from a brokers...
The mission of this forum, and the Ring which stands behind it, is empowering and educating investors about financial issues. When evaluating sites for the Ring, our focus has been to find websites that do their best to advance that purpose.
Most of the Ring sites are Canadian but we know that there are good sites with a similar focus in other countries too. Because Canadians invest overseas, it can be useful to explore such sites as well. At...
Thanks to all of your contributions, this forum has grown enormously since it opened. In fact, it has grown so much that we have run up against a database constraint at our hosting provider.
About six months ago, we quietly made changes to the forum software to spread information across multiple databases. If we had not done so, this forum would already be out of commission. The software modifications delayed the inevitable but the writing is...
I still can't figure out how to link to a specific globe advisor article to make a specific point for example . Please advise as going to www.microsoft.ca . is not helping.  At least thanks to Shakespeares and others help I have learned something about bbcode from this site already
I offer an apology to all and in particular ModeratorA. My preface to the A Return to the Gold Standard? was without thought and placed the moderator in an embarrassing impossible position. It's tough enough moderating here without having your associates cutting you off at the knees. Had I talked privately to him first, that would not have happened.
Miami has never been a great place to live. There's a lot of crime, it's known as a Jewish location, it's too hot a lot of the time, lots of Cubans/blacks and it's too big for many people. I'd take Boca Raton, which is about 200 miles north of Miami.
Have any of you heard of the Vancouver Company RGM Communications?! They seem to target stock promoters who are succeeding and accuse them of shady deals . I know Harry Moll ( ) from past business dealings. He ensures that all of his business dealings are done in a professional way with no insider deals whatsoever.
Yet, RGM Communications ( tries to portray Harry Moll, and many other stock promoters of shady dealings. It seems that someone at...
Sorry I did'nt get a chance to chime in before the topic started by Beaverlodge was locked out. I'm reluctant to add anything, but just want to comment on his post.
The forum is not broken. The forum is however full of people that have no interest in being advised on their financial well-being. Just because we feel we offer a valuable service does not mean everyone will agree. You need to get over yourself man. You're MDRT? The fact that you've...
There is a thread on this somewhere but I was unable to retrieve it.
I have been overseas for 5 months, free of any opinions on sites, biased or otherwise.
Upon my return I went back into FWR only to conclude that this forum is stuck in a rut. The same posters are talking to each other, many of them motivated and promoting their own self interests. Posters are talking to each other without any new welcoming ideas from other than the core of...

[quote= In this thread , The Wealthy Boomer ]Imagine that. Norbert and I agree on something. One of his quotes from this thread is picked up in today's blog entry on trusts:

Well, well, now we have Jonnie Goatwater over here flogging his blog.
We break into your regularly scheduled programming to thank AltaRed for rolling the post count odometer with this message . Some of the management team thought it would be appropriate to change his rank from Gold Ring to something like ...
... while others said they would retch at that graphic.
In any case, AltaRed, thanks for making the 100,000th post (and for the 2400 odd you made before too) and to all who have made this forum.
I am sure all the old timers are pleased with the current format, but here's my rant.
This is the only board I know that threads/topics are extended practically forever. I mean there are pages and pages and the new replies are constantly added to the old threads...
Sometimes the moderator separates them into new ones, but most of the time they go on and on, even if there's digression from the original...
I've noticed on other web-based forum systems such as RedFlagDeals, that there is an option to receive automatic notifications whenevere anyone posts something no matter to what sub-forum.
Is there such option on FWF? I've already noticed the watch this topic feature (or Notify me when a reply is posted checkbox whenever you submit a message), but it's not enough for me.
I thought it best to put this question in the admin box.
What is the propriety of providing portfolio advice to individuals via the FWF?
With a recent rash of threads asking for advice on particular portfolios, I'm concerned that some may be stepping over the line with regard to securities regulations. In some (many?) cases we may not know the residency of the advice seekers. As a result, both Canadian and U.S. (or other) rules may apply...
The actual definition of a “pattern” day trader is someone who buys and sells the same stock in the same business day 4 or more times in 5 consecutive business days. Once in awhile you will execute a day trade just because you either get stopped out of a stock or you stumble across a huge gain. That is fine as long as you do not do it more than 3 times in any given 5 business days.
You mean to tell me that this thread has denegrated to its current state without intervention yet somebody like smelly is banned (still)? I have to say that this 'smells' of selecting moderating.
Perhaps I'll start a petition to reinstate smelly's active posting status on this forum. C'mon, who's with me?
If I'm not mistaken, the second anniversary of Financial Webring Forum slipped by unnoticed last week. If so, Happy Anniversary !!
I first discovered this excellent forum last summer through Bylo's site and have been a regular reader and occasional contributor ever since. It's a haven from the often predatory world of investing. FWF is a great place for information, opinion and Web companionship. In fact, spending time at this Website is very...
The process of moving older threads into this new forum made me wonder if we don't need a FAQ (frequently asked questions) thread, strictly KISS and as little jargon as possible. When you look through what was yesterday 36 pages of thread titles in General Finance, you are immediately struck by the number of repetitions of certain themes. For example, I was surprised at how many threads there were about contributing to an RRSP versus paying down...
For the past several days, I have had difficulty accessing FWR via Telus ADSL. Access would stop in the middle of posting a reply, and not resume for an hour or two. Other sites could be accessed. Restarting the computer didn't help. Clearing the DNS cache didn't help. Resetting the router and modem didn't help.
Yesterday I found out that others in other areas had access at a time when I did not. Neither my main system, which is connected via...
I didnt see a suggestion thread and wanted to add to the wish list for future iterations of this site.

Thanks
ps. I was proudly introducing this forum to a friend the other day and he was suspicious because I didnt pay anything and didnt know this sight was payed for. Guess it seemed to good to be true. How is it payed for?

The costs of running this site are very low. The managers fund it from their own pockets as a public service.

But hey, like McKeough and the rest of us, you too are entitled to express your opinions here, including even the most unorthodox, sarcastic and just plain wrong ones ;)
The forum software contains various features that attempt to control the number of spam registrations (new users who register for the sole purpose of generating pointers to urls in profiles or signatures). Because phpBB is very widely used, this is now done easily by bots. Many phpBB forums on the Web have thousands of these users registered.
About a year ago, phpBB added visual confirmation for new users, which cut down on the numbers we get...
This board is powered by open-source software provided by phpbb . The software has been custom-modified by the Site Administrator to include an ignore feature and make some minor format changes.

I've been having intermittant problems for the past few weeks when accessing FWR from the USA. I am initially able to access FWR and browse posts, but after a while I loose access to FWR ( page can't be found ). No problems accessing other websites except for FWR. Restarting the browser and rebooting my PC doesn't fix the FWR problem. After a few hours I'm able to get back into FWR. The problem occured using Verizon DSL access in my condo. Any...

BUT: If you are so unwise as to not follow our advice on risk-avoidance and allocations, we will cynically support and defend a lying Prime Minister who has just destroyed upwards of 25% of your retirement savings.
