buds, can I get a quick rundown for dummies on CDIC insurance?
I am moving up cash from the US to our existing RBC chequing for purpose of buying a house (I am a PR, wife is citizen). For the span of about 2 months there could be $700K-$800K in there. Obviously maybe too much; I can easily move some into RBC savings and almost as easily move some over to existing Oaken savings account (though I wonder what Oaken's hold policy is when I have to...
I am trying to save $ on cell phones. Since there is not a consumer cost saving thread, I thought this might be the place to ask my question.
I am currently with Bell Mobility and I hate their costs. I just want a basic cell plan with very little data etc (like where can you go?). My husband and I have our own phones so we do not want to continue to pay the $70 per phone per month that Bell wants (the cost we were assigned...
The Boomer and Echo blog posted interesting article about how food companies are stealthily shortchanging you. Have you had a similar experience to those mentioned below?
Recently my husband purchased a box of my favourite cereal. I normally buy the jumbo package and this one seemed a bit smaller, but he assured me that it had cost the same amount.
Not that I didn’t believe him, but I dug around our recycle bin for the old box and imagine my...
I'd like to try to sell a few family items on eBay. Now, with their structured payment system, they now won't allow you to sell unless you register a bank account or credit card account. I'm not a business, this is for personal use.
A while back, I could've sworn that somewhere I read about some type of bank account through which a vendor you deal with could only deposit (and not withdraw) funds.
An issue has arisen with a US-based checking account: any suggestions for the best way to resolve this financially minor but personally important problem will be welcome.
For several decades, my mother and I have been joint owners of a checking account at Wells Fargo bank in the US. (I don't use it for my own banking, I am on the account for my mother's convenience; the money is hers, though it will eventually come to me as her heir.) Both my...
My in-laws have funds located with Pace Credit Union - I am unaware of how much, but they are in their 90's, so, time is of the essence.
The Globe and Mail has an article which casts Pace in a less than stellar light. I realize that GIC's and savings accounts are CDIC insured to 100K, but, do 90 somethings want to deal with headaches along the lines of insolvent credit unions.
Any thoughts on comments I might make to the in laws?...
Back in march I received notice from Tangerine that I was offered the 2.8% bonus rate until July 31st. To take advantage of this, I moved a large sum into my Tangerine savings account after I had activated the offer and received a confirmation email from Tangerine confirming activation. On checking the account today, I discovered I am not getting the 2.8% but rather I am getting their horrible 0.1% 'normal' rate. Contacting Tangerine these days...
My general Saturday morning routine is brew some coffee and then update Quicken with the week's transactions.
For the first time in a long time, RBC Online Banking has failed me this morning. I've had no success today logging into RBC Online Banking, constantly getting Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request
Im looking at getting a credit card from BMO but have a question perhaps someone who owns one can answer.
I currently have credit cards with TD and CIBC which I pay the full balance every two weeks. With TD, soon as I transfer the funds from my TD chequing account to the credit card, the balance shows $0. Now with CIBC, it stays “pending” for 4 to 5 business days before the payment clears.(and that’s direct transfer payment from a CIBC Checking...
Are there any Canadian banks that allow for wire transfers to be initiated via their web interface for personal accounts, similar to what is common on most commercial banking platforms?
I spoke to BMO, RBC and TD and they all said no, personal banking clients must visit the branch to initiate wire transfers (although some do allow sub-$10K transfers to be initiated online). The front-line employees at the other banks I tried talking to couldn't...
Hi, I was wondering if its possible to invest safely in something out of the reach of the Canadian government or banks???
I have done nothing illegal or wrong. I just simply dont feel my money is safe in Canada under the current government.
Besides our main accounts at TD we have GICs with Achieva, EQ, and Peoples. We're forever missing maturities or interest payments and it becomes a bit of a chore.
I have never used a deposit broker (e.g. scrivens?) but i assume they would manage maturities and rates and send a cheque periodically.
Does anybody have any experience to relate? The board search doesn't turn up anything.
My 2009 H&B had been working satisfactorly until data downloads were no longer available. So I bought Q H&B 2013 and have had headaches since the first day I transferred data, some going back to year 2003. There are no problems with the Banking and Property registers however the Investment registers operate very slowly – almost unusable. In the Portfolio view, scrolling down or up one entry takes about 9 seconds. Scrolling Account Transaction...
This sub-forum is called Protecting Your Money so it would seem to be valuable to see some comparisons. I have an account at a big 5 Canadian bank but I am not sure where they display their currency quotes so I will post that when I find it. In the meanwhile, here is the quote from my other broker.
One of my brokers, Interactive Brokers Canada, is quoting CAD.USD which means USD per CAD in English or USD/CAD if you prefer formulae with a bid...
While doing some investment account updating and reconciliation I stumbled upon an investment account menu item under the gear menu, Archive transactions. Google led me to How To Archive Investment Transactions To Improve Performance Archive Investment Transactions is a version of the Move Investment Transactions option. It is available only in the Subscription Release of Quicken and it is designed to reduce the number of transactions in an...
In the past, when the funds deposited had a hold, I could transfer from chequing to the interest account where the amount with a hold on it was the same, not matter which account the funds were in.
Lately, I've noticed that the same transfer seems to get rid of the hold. The savings account does not show a hold and the amount with a hold in the chequing account decreases.
Noticed when I went to access RBC's online banking that they indicate Coming Soon: Changes to Online Banking design . The details,, at least what they've divulged so far, can be found at See what's changing . According to the information they presented it is Same Functionality. But Better. I guess time and customers will make the determination. No indication other than Coming soon as to when to expect the changeover.
Hoping, somehow, 2022 will be better than 2021, but here in Ontario, not looking like it, sigh.
A while back one or more of you guru's posted something, I want to get clarification on:
Q - Is it true that you can take a high interest savings account from outside the big 5 banks and transfer it into a big 5 account like Waterhouse or BMO?
I have much cash sitting around waiting and waiting so I might buy a new...
FWF'ers do an amazing job tracking down and reporting on rate changes, questions, special offers, etc. related to high interest savings accounts (HISAs), Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs), money market funds (MMFs) and the other savings vehicles.
We would ask that you please do not use this topic to discuss the relative merits of HISAs and GICs as an investment vehicle.
For newcomers to FWF, our wiki covers Cash management ,...
My insurance broker already emailed about the upcoming changes to Alberta's auto insurance and pointed me to Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD) FAQ . The email also states: Your current auto policy(s) will not be reissued when this change comes into effect January 1, 2022, and your premiums will only be reviewed upon the renewal of your policy.
The CBC has coverage in What direct compensation for property damage auto insurance means...
Let’s say you fly to the USA to visit some relatives and they give you a $15,000.00 (US dollars) cheque.
Upon your return to Canada, you are supposed to check the appropriate box on the CBSA Declaration Card.
Question 1. What happens when the custom agent notices that you have checked that box? Do they simply
ask you how you got the money ? Are they satisfied with the simple truth “It’s a gift from my mother” ?
I have just been informed by Google that in a few days my email will require physical access to my phone to log into my email.
I need to figure out an alternative way to access messages on my phone if my phone is absent due to loss or theft, broken, out of power or in a place with no service (no cell towers, or without a SIM card for a foreign country). Ie a way that can be done over the internet or a landline phone.
For an upcoming RE purchase we've been asked to provide a bank draft to the lawyer made out to their firm in Trust .
Wife feels a bit iffy about the bank draft (she dug up this slightly old article and I recall reading in the forum and in the news about horrible issues with bank drafts gone astray.
Of course, the risk with a wire is that it might end up being sent to the wrong account.
I don't know that our lawyer will accept a wire for...
It is Nov 11 today. I greatly appreciate all the people who died and fought for our democratic freedoms over the years. Blessing to you all and thank you.
Question - Is the Costco Capital One Mastercard have any value?
I finally broke down and entered a costco. Not my type of place whatsoever.
However, I need a secure and efficient way to get (many, many   ) adult diapers for my elderly dad as the retirement...
Of course auto insurance pricing especially in Ontario has been perverted by regulatory/political factors but it is just wacky. This year we went from two cars to one, drive less than ever and have an app that tracks our driving. TD (meloche) sent the renewal and the rate diminished by $30. I use TD because I try to get into the best possible pool - in this case through my wife's university alumni assoc.. Does anyone have a suggestion on direct...
I've searched here and cdic but can't find one bit of info.
Fathers house is closing soon and were bulking up on more hisa accounts to help sop some $ up. Taxable account, I've got with one institution with myself and dad. Same place dad and my wife. The question is would all three of us dad me wife be another 100k of coverage? I'm being a bit lazy as I don't want to open yet another account at other hisa provider if I can avoid it.
Both my wife and I have our own life insurance policies. We have three children. We are in the process of also creating a personal directive, power of attorney, and a will.
I’m trying to understand what the best course of action is to avoid taxes or fees in the event one of us passes away and the life insurance policy needs to be paid out. I am aware that the funds paid out are supposed to be tax-free but have been told where are...
Virtually all life insurance policies are front loaded, as policyholders pay more than the actuarial
cost of their contemporaneous mortality risk early into the policy in exchange for paying less than their
actuarial cost later on.3 The majority of individual policies, however, never reach their maximum term
or pay a death benefit. Instead, policyholders voluntarily terminate them, thereby losing their front load.
Specifically, most term...
PSA and CSAV are the two ETFs which invest in Bank HISAs. There have been a few posts related to them in the High Interest Savings threads but nothing comprehensive.
Is anyone on here using these ETFs ? If so, have they worked as advertised or have there been any issues ? From this forum and other sources, some of the considerations appear to be -
1. They are not available at some brokerages.
2. They don't have CDIC coverage.
3. The $50 price...
ahoy, all. Newly landed PR here. I just noticed that Tangerine offers two sets of investment portfolios: five different Core portfolio (expense ratios are all 1.06%) and three different Global ETF portfolios. I'm thinking the ERs are a bit expensive (for a US transplant, used to low cost Vanguard & Fidelity).
For the record, the bulk of my retiree's life's savings is in retirement accounts at Vanguard/Fidelity and likely will remain there due...
Hello everyone, it's been awhile since I've been here. I'm looking for advice for a high interest savings account for my corporate money.
I've always had in in ING/Tangerine as it was easy to move in and out but they are only paying 0.65% and considering the banks hikes of .75 in the last year, you'd think some of that would go to us.
I realize there are places like Alterna, EQ Bank and Accelerate, I'm just not sure if they do Corporations....
If you bought a lithium battery in Canada between 2000 and 2012 you may be entitled to class action compensation.
Google Lithium Battery Class Action. No grandkids here today, so I'll leave it to a FWF computer guru to post the link to the compensation application form. :)
I am now a landed immigrant in Canada, from the US. In need of a credit card.
I have a US Amex (American Express) Gold credit card. I have been misled by Amex for several months now with their spiel that I can open a Canadian card based on my US history and credit file, and that this will be easy and seamless . I have found this to be anything but seamless and am about ready to dump them entirely...but I need a credit card (Royal Bank...
I often have a small amount of cash in my RRSP, where it generates no return. I've wondered what I can do with it.
My RRSP is with TDDI. Cash could be put in an investment savings account, but if you have less than $1000 (minimum required to start such an account), then it's not an option. And even if it is an option, the interest rate is 0.2%.
In my personal accounts, I have a second bank account with EQ (high interest savings account), which...
So today is the day that CTFS banking customers are supposed to be able to transition their online banking to the new site, CTFS.com/account . And of course, it does not work!
Anyone else having this problem?
I think I'll try again tomorrow rather than call them.
Does anyone have recommendations for cell phone plans for kids? Data isn't important, but unlimited talk and text would be great. Or I could go the other way and get the kiddo a small data plan and do VOIP apps.
I'm trying to understand how TDB8150 works. I've searched the forums as well as TD's website, but I could not find anything that covers my simple question (at least none I could see). If this is discussed elsewhere, kindly point me to it.
I'm simply trying to understand when TDB8150 pays its interest. I'm just experimenting at this point, so I bought the minimum $5k last July 15. I expected the interest to be paid either end of...
I have been trying to apply for a TD Visa Infinite Credit Card for the past few days both on Facebook and through TD's Web site. Both places I get an Error Message with the words Temporary. Any suggestions?
Phone rings. Caller id shows 877-xxx-xxxx. I let it go to voicemail. Especially important these days, as I am for some bizarre reason on the BC Liberal phone list and am getting called by every leadership campaign.
The message is peculiar. A woman identifies herself (name unfamiliar) but provides no organizational affiliation. No message, just a request to call the 877 number (which matches the caller id).
Not sure if this belongs here or in the watercooler.
A guy I know mentioned he is trying to w/d money from some bitcoin trader w/o success.
He's not very financially literate, so I offered to help.
The site's FAQ says you can w/d the same way you deposit funds either credit card or wire transfer.
Once logged into his account w/d request can be submitted, however they don't ask for any details as to where to send the funds.
Just saw a promotion going on at HSBC on USD cash at 2.5%, 180 days term deposit. But the promo is ending today.
Where are you parking your USD these days? I read about SHV, which is a money market fund. However, it involves capital gains/losses when selling so I prefer fixed rates vehicle (GIC/term deposit).
Is there a site where it keeps track of USD deposit rates just like that for Canadian dollars?
A question I've asked before but don't recall getting an answer to is,
Does anyone here know why all these Canadian High Interest Online Credit Unions are based in Manitoba? There must be some reason. Favourable provincial tax rates? Favourable legislation? Other?
Thanks. Just curious.

I don't know if this is something that is commonly known, but I wanted to share some banking hacks I've discovered over the years (TD bank, but probably applicable to all major banks). Maybe it should be added to the wiki.
1) You can have a chequing account that gives you unlimited transactions, while only paying for the most basic tier (I believe that with TD, you have to keep a balance of $3000). You get the basic account where you park the...
