I failed miserably. I did everything wrong. But after 2 years of looking and 1 year of exerting way too much energy and 6 weeks of agonizing (to the point that a friend commented I was really driving her nuts - more than usual - she commented I may need meds ), I bought new a car (likely my first and my last) that was a little hidden gem (and hopefully not a lemon) - a 2006 subaru in disguise. And snow tires - yay - finally found some at...
Over the past 12 months, I have heard countless radio commercials and seen countless flyers and ads surrounding how to reduce your long-distance bill by adding a few numbers in front of the long distance (LD) number you are calling.
e.g. is just one of many I have heard of.
I was wondering if anyone can share with the FWF members their experiences (positive and/or negative) from using any of these services. Even better, can anyone confirm...
I pay most of my bills on-line. I record the transaction number. Just before we left for our Malta/Rome trip, I pre-paid my CIBC Aeroplan Visa bill and made a note of the transaction number. The next day I went to draw money for the trip and the ATM machine would not give me back my Bank Card. So I got a new one. I had to activate it for my on-line banking. Upon my return I discovered that the Visa payment had not been made. When I checked with...
Not sure if this affects anyone here but I noticed on the most recent Investorline statements mailed out that BMO Investorline is changing the products offered starting September 1st.
Apparently, they will only carry cashable GIC products and HISA that are issued by BMO as per the following note:
As of Sept 1, InvestorLine will limit its offering of HISAs and short-term cashable GICs to those issued by members of the BMO Financial Group,...
These things always start in California, Credit cards, ZIP Codes: California retailers can't ask patrons for ZIP Codes, court rules - latimes.com , but I wonder if/when it will migrate north of the border.
When asked, I'll usually decline to provide the information, although I suspect they have other means to collect the marketing information that they want.
With interest rates at PC Financial of only 1.00%, where can one place some money that will be needed in 12-18 months (i.e., principal must be protected)?
I was wondering if the big bank preferred shares would be an option ... or is there some significant element of risk involved in that? How would one even go about selecting one (or more)?
I'm somewhat old fashioned when it comes to bills: I pay them by cheque and get the cancelled cheque back from the bank.
Why? I suppose I like the physical proof the cancelled cheque provides. The one time in my life that a payment was disputed, I told the company I have the cancelled cheque right here in my hand and they immediately backed down. But cheques from CIBC are costing about 40 cents a piece now and I'm thinking of going to on-line...
If you belong to CAA check your credit card and auto insurance before renewing.
We've belonged to CAA for years but am now cancelling because my new TD Visa card offers roadside assistance throughout North America. And yesterday I learned that we're actually now double-covered. I took a minute to read the newsletter that was enclosed with my auto insurance renewal -- the newsletter I normally toss into the recycling bin without a glance. Turns...
Alberta money manager to pay $1.5-million for misleading investors
The ASC accused Mr. DeLaet of using promotional material and documents that misled investors to believe their investments in U.S. life settlement policies were secured with “reinsurance bonds” designed to protect their investments and provide a steady stream of income.
In fact, the ASC alleged he only bought one reinsurance contract, telling the commission hearing panel he...
Hi there, anyone else here have a High Interest Savings Account with Ally?
I opened two HISAs with Ally a few years ago (maybe in 2009). One was a TFSA the other was a vanilla HISA.
Periodically I would log in and check my statements to verify interest credits to my accounts.
Well, I haven't logged into my ally account for a while. Last week, while doing my taxes, I finally opened some unopened mail from Ally. I had three pieces of mail from...
I am just curious if the recent events in Cyprus are causing people to revisit their capital preservation strategies?
I, for one, am a highly conservative investor who doesn't feel like I can afford to take big gambles with my savings. And I tried to stay within the CDIC limits on relevant savings to avoid exposing myself to risks otherwise covered by CDIC. However, with the current state of the world economy, the US printing money like there's...
My wife and I are both TD customers, and I would like to access her accounts through my TD Easyweb login. TD tells me this is not possible since they are not joint accounts, but I'm wondering if I received incorrect information. Have any TD customers been able to do this?
For travellers and expatriates who may have to use a shared computer to access their account I personally think the logon procedures the big five Canadian banks display at their websites are primitive to say the least. Every one of them has the same layout where you enter the card number and password on the same page. Where's the security for the user?
I have paid nearly sixty thousand dollars towards that mortgage. Nearly five years in, I have yet to touch the principal.
I have been paying a thousand dollars a month in credit card debt, I said, for more years than I can count, and I haven't even made a dent in what I owe, never mind that I've paid the debt some four times over.
With CIBC I get for an annula fee a card tracking service. It is called MyIdentityAssist . Apparently they check your credit cards for ??? and you can register all kinds of information in their cloud that can be accessed at anytime. I am not certain this is really worth the $25 annual fee. Anyone use this?

MBNA drops credit card cheques
They have long been an annoyance to many
I get extremely irritated when these damn things arrive unsolicited in the mail and immediately feed them into my shredder. The idea that they may fall into the wrong hands by e.g. mail box theft really bugs me.
I will be sitting on a large chunk of cash for about 12 months. Its around 180k and will be turned over to daughter once her divorce is finalized. I don't want to expose these funds to very much risk. I am thinking of a money market fund with a low mer or an ETF equivalent. Have you got any suggestions or recommendations? Thank you in advance.
I had a question on TD's Market Growth GICs as my mother has gone on the advice of a TD rep and purchased one of these GIC products. I believe the one she was sold was the Security GIC Plus.
The whole thing to me stinks as she was sold on the fact that this GIC product has the potential to earn far more than a regular GIC.
Personally, this sounds too good to be true: protection of principal while also potentially getting higher returns than an...
My wife and I are frequent cruisers (usually on Holland America line) and in the event that some others here are as well - I thought that I would mention something that some people might not be aware of.
If you are a shareholder in Carnival (they also own Holland America) or Royal Caribbean lines then you qualify for on board credits depending on the length of the cruise. If, for example you book a 2 week cruise - you will be given a $250 cabin...
CTV has a poll showing that debit cards are becoming more popular than credit cards.
JMO, but the banks must be laughing all the way to the bank. Imagine spending your own money when you could use a credit card, enjoy a month's payment holiday and get back 1 or 2 percent of money charged if you use a credit card.
I just fell off my chair !!!
Could someone please enlighten me as to why anyone in their right mind would prefer a debit card...
I am debt free (own a car to suit my needs and a house big enough for my family)
Savings are 125,000 hard cash
House worth now is 600,000
Age 31
Married with one son. Plan to have 2 more.
RESP contribution so far around $8,000
I am not necessarily looking into an aggressive revenue generation from investments but to protect it from inflation plus some growth with least risk. I have worked hard for this money and I am happy with my financial...
I just noticed that my deposits didn't show up this past Friday. I didn't give this much thought until I started worrying about identity theft. I will check again on Monday. Is their anyone else who didn't get their deposit on Friday?
I am Mr. Ghazi Kraytem, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture of Beirut & Mount Lebanon and a Lebanese industrialist, who the Israeli government considers a Hezbollah terrorist group financier. After the unwarranted and sudden air raid attack by Israeli forces in the commercial capital of Lebanon, which distorted businesses and commercial activities as the building which the Headquarters is situated was...
We're into a new year and it's time to start a new thread on the current savings/GIC/MMF offerings of online and retail banks and brokerages. This is the thread to post rate changes, questions, special offers, etc.
To start off, here are some of the current rates offered on High Interest Savings Accounts as of January 1, 2012:
ING savings account 1.5%
ING RRSP savings account: 2%
ING TFSA account 2%
People's Trust Savings and RRSP savings...
I guess this is also the headphone review thread. I just bought
Sony MDRF925RK for $49.99
I think they suck, there is always distortion from poor reception and if you try to make them louder (like 200% vol in vlc) the clipping is horrible. I guess there's no real high powered headphones unless you want to wear a car battery or something.
They do fit comfortably over the ears and for quieter listening they'd be fine if I could get rid of the...
Noticed a new programme that TD Bank is starting: Allow telephone transfer of US funds from your TD US account to a US branch, apparantly up to $25,000 at a time. Going to branch to get more info on this. Would save time and money vs wiring money to a US Bank. Has anyone checked it out yet?
I spend my winter in the USA. Many fellow snowbirds recommend the CSA currency exchange program in having funds deposited to your USA bank account on a monthly basis. I have just opened an account with them. I would appreciate receiving your comments or experiences . They claim they have very low exchange rates ? hope this true.
CardSwap is an on-line gift card buy/sell service.
I was given a Future Shop gift card. When I buy electronics gear, I can usually find sources that are much cheaper than Future Shop, so I don't shop there unless it's something small. CardSwap offers $371.25 for a $450 FS gift card. $78.75 seems like a big loss, but I will probably recover that by buying somewhere else. e.g. FS has a surround sound speaker package for $600. Costco and an EBay...
For once a govt TV commercial has told me something useful. The federal govt now has a website that posts recalls for consumer goods, motor vehicles, food and health stuff. It's at . I don't know if this is new, but I wasn't aware of it.
I have been using a deposit broker for a lot of my fixed income investments ( primarily 5 yr GIC's ) . I write the cheques to the actual bank/credit union etc. , I give the cheques to the broker who finds me rates which I could not seem to get for my self. From time to time ( ~2X / yr ) I get statements from the bank/credit unions , some of these come directly from the institution via canada post others come from the deposit broker. I do get...
a validated USA billing address
What's that? If it's an address that's known to your CC company, then just call them and have them add the address of an Amerifriend to your profile. Tell them that you sometimes stay there and want to be able to have stuff shipped there when you visit. Is that enough to satisfy Amazon?
Or does Amazon, like many banks, do something special like look you up in databases to confirm that you're a legitimate...
Car insurance rates hike will take place soon. I am already paying $80/month. if the rate is hike I have to pay $90/month for a 13 yr old Honda accord.

Do you think Ontario car insurance rate is too high ?
I just finished reading the Rich Dad's guide to investing; what the rich invest in, that the poor and middle class do not.
I haven't read the other books in the series, but Kiyosaki makes many references to them, in which the message seems consistant: To become wealthy, do not rely on investing after tax dollars from earned income towards outsider investments(ie mutual funds), instead, to use the tax advantages that a business provides to...
Hey, I got a notice today from Paypal saying I've been selected as part of a random verification and I need to sign on and review stuff.
I'm paranoid about this. The email looked legit but I did not click on anything and went straight to www.paypal.com instead. The first thing I am asked for is to confirm my credit card. That spooked me and I signed off.
Anyone been picked recently for such a paypal verification?
I am pondering starting a side business, however I am going to start very small. Thus I would like to delay incorporation as much as possible until the business cashflows can easily sustain incorporation costs and professional accounting costs.
My questions :
1- Is it possible to perform business accounting by myself in the first few years (even though I don't have an accounting designation, but I've taken basic accounting classes) and report...
This seemed worthy of its own thread. According to this legal interpretation of a case involving the Part XII of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act ,
The court, having concluded that trust claims conflict with the customer pool fund requirements of Part XII, determined that the customer pool fund requirements of Part XII should prevail over the trust claims asserted by the group opposing the assignment in bankruptcy.
The court also rejected the...
Not sure what the actual root cause is, but several recent emails on www.redflagdeals.com forum Personal Finance, about fake screens asking for personal and banking information. At this time, they've only written about funnies for the TD and PC websites.
I occasionally allow strangers in line to purchase their groceries with my loyalty card out of courtesy as they have forgotten theirs or they didn't have one. Is there any reason why this should not be done? The card number and the total accumulated points are printed on the receipt but without any personal information.
Where is the best place to store my will?? I have heard of saftey deposit boxes, but the problem I hear is that no one can get into the box once I'm dead. Lawyer's offices are an option but if my lawyer is a small 1 -2 man operation they may fold up, move, and retire b4 being called upon for the Will. I think a tust company/bank might do it but they will charge a fee. I'm looking for a low cost option if possible. Any ideas???? On the same note...
They don't seem to hear “please do not call again” ! So after running up the stairs to catch a call, which turns out to be a solicitation, I get a mite perturbed, and engage them in conversation. Here's some of them....
I kept getting these credit card rate reduction calls.... They always start off and how are you today?
In frustration, I said that since they knew all about my credit cards, if he gave his address, I'd just send them my credit...
My girlfriend wants us to move in together. I'm a bit confused about how common law works, and have a few concerns. First of all, she is deeply in debt (huge OSAP loan and some credit card debt), and makes near min wage. I on the other hand make decent money and have some assets, a maxed out TFSA, an RRSP with about 25k, and an unregistered trading account with a few k. Not a lot compared to you millionaires, but I wouldn't want to lose any of...
I just noticed that on my CIBC Corporate Bank Account I am no longer getting my physical cheques returned. Instead there is an image of the front of the cheques on my monthly statement.
I don't recall any notice that this was going to happen, so I'l follow up with them on that. But my question here is this some sort of new general trend. Any implications in not having the actual check returned?
