The guy on the other end said he was from Industrial Alliance; that one of their advisors had worked on my house with the previous owner, and that they could save me $$ on my insurance.
I double checked that he had said the previous owner- then let him know that the previous owner was my grandfather who has been dead for over 40 years. He was flabbergasted.
Maybe I should look into buying Carlton cards shares, as clearly we have a major situation not many are aware of. I went in to get my wife a mother's day card and I couldn't believe some of the prices. $10, $12 and $13 cards that are barely better than dollar store cards. And this was at Walmart, not some fancy boutique . I cheaped out and got a $7 card. Of course US prices are no longer printed on the cards, but maybe China can help with...
I have been out of range of a computor for several weeks. In my mail I received a package and card from RBC. I cannot think of a reason why I might keep the card and activate it. I am well served by a Visa Card and the Bank card. Is there a thread discussing this item that would let me know I have not missed anything before I drop the stuff in the garbage can?
Just had my eyes checked at the local optometrist. That cost $98.
The optician gave me a quote for new glasses: $250 for a no-name frame plus $500 for the lenses. Yikes!
Marketplace did a story on glasses:
Shopping on the Clearly Contacts website, I can get comparable glasses for $158 total. Frames and lenses for less than the price of lenses alone at the local shop.
Has anybody had any experience buying glasses on-line? Can you share...
This has come up before, but it was some time ago, and things change.
My daughter wants to buy a used car. Neither she nor I are particularly good at negotiating that kind of thing. It seems to me that the use of a broker to negotiate for us would be well worth the fee.
Can anyone recommend such a broker in the Ottawa area?
So unbenounced to me someone was able to change my address for my bank account. It took me a month before i noticed luckily there plan was foiled
by a call center rep.
Accoirding to the investigator they made 3 calls between 12-1am first call they got nervous and hung up second call convinced
agent to change address with only name, current address, credit card#,and amount of recent purchase pretty weak criteria was ready to switch banks....
I'm most likely going to be buying a certified, used Honda CRV from a local dealership this week. Does anyone know what the markup is on used vehicles? I'm looking for info to base my negotiations. I've looked up the Black Book value, and adjusted for my province (added 10% for AB). It looks like the markup from that value is 11-30% (based on the range from BBV). VMRcanada suggests prices that are actually close to the listed price. I've read...
Got a call today from MBNA (sounded like call centre marketer) to tell me that they were offering me Credit Wise free of charge if I keep a zero balance on my card (seems like insurance coverage for my balance if I were to lose my job/become disabled/have a critical illness). Fees are 99c/$100 if I have a balance. Does anyone have this, and is there a catch somewhere? They started asking for personal information, so I told them to go away and I...
Any suggestions for a 90+ year old lady who has over 100,000 in her bank account. She has a financial advisor for her investment account but she considers this 'rainy day' money. CDIC, liquidity and safety are factors. are factors.
As you are no doubt aware, and it is to Ally`s credit that they make it known on their website, US $ deposits with Ally Canada are not CDIC-insured.
The March 2012 stress test on US banks indicated that Ally US failed the stress test. :!: How does this affect Ally Canada`s financial situation? Basically, are US $ held in Ally Canada`s US $ accounts safe?
I currently have my US $ with ING but the rate is lower than what Ally is offering...
Hello,
I did a search for loans and found nothing, so, although I am sure there must be something on the topic on the boards somewhere, I cannot find it and thought to start a new thread.
In another thread I was talking about buying a car, so I thought I should get a line of credit in place just in case. I already had a line of credit for 10000. But, I wanted to raise it to $30,000. They are willing to give it to me but my question has to do...
I book my motel and hotel reservations through the various internet sites. My preferred provider is Priceline. It allows me to bid . This has worked very well. I recall getting a 5 star Hilton in Venice for $130 a night when the front desk desk starting price was $700. I think I have been getting 4 star and better hotels at prices people pay for 2 star hotels. In smaller markets were the best hotel might be a 3 star or a 2 1/2 star I have found...
I have a high amount of debt associated with buying and fixing up two rental properties. In 2 1/2 years a HELOC term will be up and the full amount due which right now is 68k. The interest rate is currently 4.75% it's variable tied to prime. I have 43K on first mortgage it's fixed at 4.375% I have 54k in credit card debt. about 50% of that is at 20% rate. OUCH! I have been paying an extra $1,600 per month on the higher interest rate CC and only...
I have a small business with 2 locations , each location is only open when I'm there, otherwise it is closed. each location only has 1 phone line . I would like to accept as payment visa, mastercard, and debit. . I understand there are many different companies which offer this, eg tdbank, monaris , elavon/costco, ect. I'm looking for the least expensive way to accept these payments. there seems to be equipt. rental fees , transaction fees ,and a...
Here is an interesting.. to me.. question. I have a younger friend, who lives in Toronto, who is divorced and has two children in shared custody. These kids are respectively, a girl 14 and a boy 12. They both have bank accounts into which they have deposited monies received as gifts or in payment for odd jobs. My friend told me that his ex wife has taken the money out of the kid's account without their permission. he told me that the bank...
After the last half hour on the phone, I have to tell you that I considered putting this in Scam Alerts.
I have a 3 year old Craftsman lawn mower. I need a new mulching blade.
Last Monday, perhaps Tuesday, I call the number on the sears.ca website that offers parts and service to order a new blade. (Two actually, because the mower is in good shape and pretty lightly used, so it's going to last a long time.) A woman with a slightly Slavic...
Say you're looking at early retirement -- with no DB Pension of any sort -- at the age of 55 or so. You're sitting on close to $600,000 in RRSPs split between RRBs (to cover hyperinflation/inflation) and long gov't strips that will mature on a yearly basis starting about age 60 (they're currently yielding 6.5% or thereabouts). That stuff can snooze on autopilot (almost) until the mandatory RRIF age.
If I pay someone to provide a service and they don't meet the minimum requirements they said they would provide, can I get my money back and get the work completed another way or am I obliged to let them take another shot at it?
In my situation I'd rather go somewhere else than let them try again.
Here's the specifics of my situation:
Black's Photography had a special offer for slide scanning. The offer said scanning...
I'm looking at updating my and my wife's wills. We will have mirror image wills, my wife and I are executors for each other. When we are both gone 50% will pass in trust to each of our 2 kids (teenagers 15,18) . However, when we are both gone we need to apoint executors for our wills and these executors will also have to be the trustees for the $$ we leave for our kids. I've be told that it may be a good idea to have a trust company like...
Is there any good reason to over fund an resp???? I have 2 kids ( 15 , 18 ) oldest in univ. now . the oldest doesn't qualify for govt. grant now due to age. youngest still does. in the past i contibuted 2500/kid/year to maximize the govt. grant. should I contribute even more excess cash in to the resp fund, to take advantage of the tax free growth then use the kids lower taxed kids to withdraw the earnings.???
I have just sold my condo in Toronto and am renting and plan to rent for about 1-2 years. The proceeds of the sale are all in HISA at RBC earning 1.2%/year.
I have opened an RBCDI account and plan to put the whole shabbang into XSB. I am hoping to just get 3-4% return for safety.
Is there enough liquidity in XSB to handle $500k for a single purchase? I am wondering what most people do in this situation?
I have a really stupid question for anybody holding the BMO US$ Mastercard:
I do my retail banking with TD and there does not appear to be any simple way to pay the BMO US$ Mastercard short of withdrawing US currency from a TD branch, going to a BMO branch, and manually paying the bill. TD does not allow bill payments from its US dollar accounts, and does not allow addition of the BMO US$ Mastercard as a payee.
An interesting article about big savings by purchasing Online. ( The readers comments are also informative. Many have become fed up with the poor customer service of the local establishments; fed up with the hassle of driving and parking involved; and fed up with unwanted sales pitches for things like extended warranties. Everyone seems much happier with the almost hassle-free, money-saving experience of shopping Online.
I don't know if this is a hoax, but if it is, I guess it's time to go back to paper statements (although a month is a long time to wait to see if one's account has been emptied!)
How does one truly know , if that's possible, that eBay is to be trusted? Could you much wiser ones educate me about whether or not I should be using the site? Any stories would be appreciated. Thanks very much.
We're into a new year and it's time to start a new thread on the current savings/GIC/MMF offerings of online and retail banks and brokerages.
Within the past few weeks, several online banks have raised one or more of their rates for deposit accounts. This is the thread to post rate changes, questions, special offers, etc. Here are some of the current rates offered as of January 1, 2011:
ING savings or RRSP account 1.5%
ING TFSA account 2%...
At the end of every year, I update my GIC ladders to see what's maturing the following year. This week, I printed off all my confirmation emails from Peoplestrust for my 5 year GICs and entered them into my ladder spreadsheet. Then as a crosscheck, I emailed them for confirmation of the total number of GICs and amounts. To my distress, they have lost 2 of these, one for 24 Sept and one for 15 Nov totalling $16,000. When I asked them for an...
[quote= Back in September in this thread jeebuz ] Thanks Northbeach. I notice that RBCDI charges a 1% early redemption fee on mutual funds sold within 120 days of purchase. Other than that, AIS100 looks like a good replacement for MIP510.
Arby: I believe that AIS100 has an exemption to that rule at RBCDI. When I sell AIS100 @ RBCDI I get no warning about the 120 day holding period like I get with other mutual funds. Call RBCDI to confirm...
We are seniors 67 and 69 with a house fully paid and a 10-year old car. The only income is our government pensions and a LIF that allows us to withdraw $4500 a year that we use to cover any shortfalls. We have $165,000 in RRSPs from which we withdraw small amounts to lower our outstanding $35,000 line of credit. This line of credit, which was used to keep a business afloat, has annual interest in the 6% range. The business is dead but we are...
Every time I decide to travel I always buy trip cancellation insurance. My travel agent always sells me a package that include lost baggage but is non medical (I have medical coverage for travel). This is a pretty expensive and age related policy.
Does anyone know of a less costly way of doing this?
I have an incorporated company that luckily has some spare cash. I'd like to invested it into something very secure like GIC's ; however, the after tax return is dismal. I have heard of corporate class investment funds where fixed income type gains within the fund are reported to my company as capital gains ( a tax advantage) . In general , Are these funds worthwhile or are they just another gimick to spearate me from my money???
Having taken a friend for lunch last Sat. I used my Visa to pay for ou lunch. As usual, the waiter brought the machine? to our table and I had some difficulty putting the tip in (they are all different!) The waiter came to my aid but it still did not work and out spewed the slips with Invalid Transaction on them. With that, another waiter came by to assist, and I am looking at the Invalid Transaction Slip, I see my pin number printed on it!!! I...
First heard of this over at RFD. Decided to do a Google search myself. Sure enough, over at the Government of Canada Canada Gazette website (bottom of the page):
ROGERS BANK
APPLICATION TO ESTABLISH A BANK
Notice is hereby given, pursuant to subsection 25(2) of the Bank Act (Canada), that Rogers Communications Inc. intends to apply to the Minister of Finance for the issue of letters patent incorporating a bank under the Bank Act (Canada)...
What is the simplest way of sending a small amount of money (about $100 USD) to an individual in the U.S.? The key is simplicity for myself & the recipient (which rules out using a money order). I am not overly concerned with getting a good exchange rate, nor am I concerned with fees (I am willing to pay about $25).
Live in Manitoba. Want liquid investment with best interest rate and safety. Realize from previous discussions that
CUDIC not guaranteed like CDIC (up to $100,000). Current high interest Credit Union savings accounts provide 2 to 3X the rate of interest than bank savings accounts. How much risk do you really believe there is for my avarice to trump my safety concerns by putting our funds in a CU account? In either case (bank savings or CU...
Hi
My one year everything free from Rogers package that my builder provided is coming to an end next month. Don't really want to change providers but believe that Rogers probably won't offer me their best deal unless I bring it up; was wondering what packages are on offer. Anyone have any ideas/info??
You know how mechanics put a sticker in the upper corner of your windshield showing the date and mileage for your next oil change? For the second time in a row, a mechanic at my Subaru dealer has indicated that the oil change is due in three months instead of the manufacturer's six-month interval. The first time it occurred I thought it was a simple mistake. Now I think it's a deliberate ploy. I suspect that most drivers rely on those stickers...
I'm getting really tired of these guys. Last evening was about the third company in the last two years knocking at my door and claiming they would be taking out the old hot water tank and replacing it with a new one. Direct Energy is responsible for our tank, even though the rep at the door claims he was with a company associated with Enbridge. Contacted both Direct Energy and Enbridge and it's like they wash their hands off the whole deal....
Has anyone had success at getting higher than board rates when purchasing or renewing GIC's at the Royal Bank? In the past I have had no problem getting 1/4-1/2% above board however lately it's like pulling teeth! First phone call it was board rate only (1 yr @ 1.5%), 2nd call 1 yr. @ 1.6%, 3rd call 1.68% and I am waiting for a call back. Meanwhile I have lost 4 days of interest. Am I the only one being screwed around by the Royal?
I have several GIC's maturing with RBCDI over the next few months. As their 5-yr rates are <3%, and I can get, e.g. 3.5% at Peoplestrust, I would like to transfer the matured amounts which would be in my RRSP to PT. Would RBCDI charge me a fee for the transfer (not withdrawal) and how much per GIC? If yes, is the fee proportional to the amount of the GIC or the number of GICs, or can it be done in one transaction? The funds would be in my RBCDI...
Recently I bought a new air conditioner. It came with a cash rebate of $250, which I applied for. In the small print on the back of the rebate form it stated the rebate would be by debit card .
A card arrives in the mail. It is a prepaid MasterCard Debit card. These things can apparently be loaded with money like a Chapters or Tim Hortons card and used anywhere Mastercard is used. Unlike a Tim Horton's card,...
We have had a $150k line of credit for 30+ years. Initially it was with Royal Trust, but it went to RBC when RT disappeared. It's a long time ago, but I believe it was based on out home equity.
We seldom used this LOC. It was based on Prime plus 0.25%. Last time we used it was in late 2009. Our last statement was in January 2010 and it clearly states that interest rate as of Jan 26 2010 would be Prime + 0.25% = 2.5%.
