Does anyone have any insight into the Dental care for low-income seniors | ontario.ca eligibility requirements on income?
We are looking at this for parent(s) and it seems that an annual net income of $22,200 or less for a single senior is right around their level of CPP and OAS annual income and would likely exclude anyone receiving any other income above and beyond CPP and OAS.
Did a recent road trip down eastern US. Maine still has tool booths but further south they have largely disappeared. Signage indicated that the state would send the bill in the mail - no requirement, or method, to pay on line indicated. EPass was only method indicated in these locals - others would be sent a bill.
I can see how this might work for US registered vehicles but expect that I’ll never receive a bill for these as amounts were low....
I'm used to flying with one return ticket. There might be multiple legs with multiple airlines but still just one ticket.
I want to go to the big island of Hawaii. I used to book with Alaska; YYJ - SEA - KOA and return was easy and quick. Changing planes at SEA was not too bad time wise. Now, there are fewer flights and overnight layovers.
It looks like that if I fly Alaska to HNL and switch to Hawaiian Airlines, the trip will be shorter...
I will be travelling in Europe for approximately 6 weeks. ie Spain, Ireland and England. This is my first trip since COVID to Europe.
Any suggestions re economical management of finances while away. I will need euro, British pounds ;and have Canadian and US accounts at my bank in Canada. Obviously, I prefer not to pay extra for financial transactions than necessary. I am not comfortable carrying large amounts of cash - however that may be my...
I'm getting ready to pull the pin and to start retirement at the age of 59 in the coming months. Been lurking on this board and planning the best I can and putting my first post here. I have seen posts on travel/cancellation/trip insurance for seniors and for the lucky ones, have it as part of your retirement medical plans. I don't have that luxury and want to get forum members on where they get their travel/cancellation/trip interruption...
Hi everyone. I'm by nature inclined against structured products, but a largish GIC has come due in our RRSPs and on looking at the alternatives, this one is now sort of on the radar. Here's the basic scenario and how I'm looking at it, but feel free to pull me back from the brink :D
- TD currently offers 5.5% for a 1-year GIC, also 5.5% for 2 year, and 4.8% for 3 year
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is raising national-security concerns about Wealth One Bank of Canada, telling three of its founding shareholders that they could be susceptible to Chinese government coercion, according to two sources.
The shareholders are also facing allegations from other Canadian financial institutions that they have engaged in money laundering, according to a letter sent by Ms. Freeland to the three individuals late last...
It's the new year, so in about a month, I'm going to get a bill from my US Visa card issuer (Chase). Because of new rules in the US restricting fees on late payments and interest rate changes, rumour has it that US banks are going to start charging fat fees, especially to troublesome customers like me who pay in full every month. Since 9/11, cross-border shopping for credit cards has been severely restricted.
Hello. I have been thinking about purchasing physical gold bars. Not as a way to generate an income, but rather to keep the value of my money and to fight inflation.
I am an absolute novice to this. So I am just wondering if there are people who have experience with buying actual physical gold and if they have any knowledge or experiences to share. From how to buy, how to store it, how to sell, any paperwork involved, and any tax consequences....
Sigh, I guess I'll have to leave another $500 parked indefinitely in order to continue avoiding fees on my Value Plus account at TD.
As pointed out by marty123 a few years ago, it's still a reasonable 'return on investment' given other fixed income alternatives. $131.40 saved annually on $2500 equals about 5.25%. A lot better than I'm getting on MIP710 or the YTM of CLF/XSB.
On July 19, 2022, I have purchased a 5 year GIC at Tangerine:
- annual rate 4.75%
- principal $10,000
- interest to be reinvested annually.
The above are easy enough numbers to do the annual interest calculation in your head, at least for the first year, right?
4.75% of $10k is $475.00, easy-peasy.
Checking my account today, it shows a reinvested interest payment dated July 19, 2023 of $476.30, which appears to be one year plus a day worth of...
I have a TD Aeroplan credit card. Got a call from TD Fraud last Wednesday saying they detected a fraudulent transaction. OK, let's cancel the card and get a new one with a different number. Agent said it would arrive in 2 business days, i.e. Friday.
Friday I go to the branch - no card. They call, and it seems TD or Visa, I'm not sure which, used to send by courier but now uses Canada Post, and it will arrive only this week.
Hello. I purchased a presale condo with my mother's help a while ago. She was the one in contact with our agent. He told us that he would give us 50% of the commission he got from the developer. He said that he would give us this money (roughly 10k) in two installments, one when we paid the developer for the second time (roughly 60 % of this 10K) and the other one at the end, about 40%. However, the document he sent for me to sign said something...
I have been unavailable for the month ofApril.Today I find Tangerine has a new system that doesn't allow me to talk to a human. Any thoughts on a work around? Thanks in advance.
Interested to hear if everyone who signed up for a new account with iTrade in winter received their bonus gift today. I haven't as yet but it's suppose to be today (July 31st).
I plan to buy some 5y/10y US treasury bonds from my brokerage ( Interactive Brokers) instead of VGIT (treasury etf). I don't know how long it usually takes to sell such individual bonds on the secondary market. Does it usually take days or weeks or months? Thank you.
hi All
My brother was recently given a 500k gift from an old friend he had helped out many times over the years.
My brother lives in Vancouver, is nearing retirement, debt free, married, and his kids are independent. He and his wife have a healthy retirement portfolio so this 500k really is just extra. He would like to make sure his kids are financially sound and doesn't want to just give them $$ just yet, instead he wants them to stay hungry...
I have a TD Aeroplan Credit card. I also have a TD Easyweb account. I get email notifications for the savings account but not for the credit card. I just checked with TD and there is no system for the credit card to send a notification that a statement is ready. WTF? I have CIBC credit card and I get notifications on that?
Hello. I have some of my money in GICs. I usually purchase the ones with a one-year term, and I go for the best rate, of course. You know how interest rates change all the time, and I have a thought to take advantage of this. Why don't I purchase GICs with monthly payout instead of yearly? This way, it gives me more flexibility. When the interest rate goes up, I can cash my old GIC and since it has already given me a few months' worth of...
I know this may be a silly question, don’t laugh, but I am wondering what is the difference between purchasing a GIC with LBC Digital through my account at TDDI or in my LBC online account directly? Where does the money go when it matures, to my TDDI account or institution?
Thanks.
If promotion ended… say June 30, when can one expect payout at big 5 brokerage? Here I am referring to the recent BMO investorline and Scotia iTrade that both ended June 30. Recall some posters here took part in it and transferred money from other FI to Scotia iTrade. Thought I would ask before emailing . Thanks
beside BMT104/109/114 , currently at 4.60% yield, are there any other HISA I can buy at BMO Investorline? I have some cash sitting in brokerage account collecting 0% and would like to know some safe option . Also will be looking into cashable GIC's when the market open , the rates are hovering at about 4% there. Also not sur if Bond are the way to go, as I have never purchased them before. Will need this money to put a down on a house payment in...
I did some research this week and I have exceeded the CIPF coverage at my brokerage firm. If the company were to become insolvent, I would only get about half of my money back. That got me thinking that I should start opening accounts with a few other banks or brokerage firms to maintain CIPF coverage.
I wanted to check in to see if this was a common practice. Additionally, even though I maintain good cyber security (i.e. strong passwords,...
It's been a long long time since I needed it but I thought Equifax was required to give you a free copy of your own credit report. Can't find a link to that anywhere. Is that still a requirement on Equifax?
Or do I need to give up and just try the 'join now, get one month free, and get your report' route? I always hate that approach since it seems to involve forking over my credit card and hoping I can cancel properly in time.
We spend about 120 days a year in Arizona spread out over the period Oct-April. The roaming charges on our CDN cell phones when in the US are very expensive, so we got separate US phones for when we are here. Still pretty expensive all in. We use Telus in Canada and Cricket in Arizona. Both sets of phones are coming off contracts soon. Ideal solution would be use the same phones in both places but not pay roaming charges?
Anyone find a good...
Last weekend someone withdrew $800 from our joint chequing account using a fraudulent bank card and the correct PIN. The bank detected the suspicious activity in our account and de-activated the card the same day but the damage is done. Since we still had our card, it appears that someone was able to skim the card number and PIN and manufacture a card to order.
A couple of lessons to take away:
1) Be very careful where you use your card for...
A change in employment means my family's health and dental plan thru an employer is ending and being replaced by an HSA.
So now I need to determine if it better to stick with the HSA to pay health/dental costs or use the money to buy into a health/dental plan.
Are there any tools out there to help with evaluating this decision? My initial thought for an approach is to review what my typical annual claims were that were covered and then compare...
I'm trying to gauge the value of CDIC insurance. Let's say you have >$100,000 in cash - how foolish is it to hold the entire sum in a single HISA at one of the big 5 banks?
Is the CDIC funded well enough to properly cover their insurance liability in the event that one of the big 5 gets wiped out (or whatever would need to happen for your money to disappear)?
How would you park a large amount of cash (again, >$100,000) if you were...
This can be handy for everybody, but specially for our family members that are not very tech savvy.
CIRA Canadian Shield is a DNS resolver that blocks phishing / scam / malware sites. The installation is somewhat advanced (one needs to change the DNS setting on the home router, which is not within everybody's abilities; it also works on Android / iOS at the device level), but once it's set it just works.
Last week I was updating my Quicken files from my online CIBC site. Suddenly each time I had to enter a verification code. This meant that CIBC would send me a 6 digit number. This started about 10 days ago and happens every time. It also happens on my laptop. I contacted CIBC and they went through settings on Chrome, made me try a new browser, uninstall Ad Block, all to no avail. The lady said she would escalate the problem. I did not install...
Hello All
I live in BC where we have govt controlled auto insurance. I own 2 cars and I am looking at the amount of 3rd party liability insurance coverage for these cars. I am told that awards are increasing and I think I would like about 8 to 10 Mill of coverage for each car. My young adult kids also drive the cars. It appears that the cheapest 3rd party coverage would come as an 7-9Mill Umbrella policy covering both cars ( and as a bonus any...

We are sorry to let you know that Book Depository has now closed.
I've been a regular customer. Even under Amazon's ownership, BD was often competitive with .ca &.com suppliers. Not just by avoiding the taxes, but also because books in the UK are priced to the UK market, which is ... different ... to the NA market.
I'm curious if somebody had good or bad experience with RBC group insurance? Currently we have 2 cars and home insured with The Personal group insurance, but my got new job in company that have group insurance with RBC.
P.S. I couldn't find any insurance related thread , so posted here
I'm planning to buy a house with my girlfriend and one question that I have is how we should deal with finances. One thought that came up is that we should get a joint bank account and contribute equally to household expenses. We both make about the same amount of money, but I have almost 10x in savings compared to her. Would this be reasonable?
Our plan is to each put 200k for the down payment (our aim is a 400k down payment). The cost of the...
Hello I welcome any information.
My elderly father had misplaced his trust in my older sibling and had given him an enduring POA , it has now been revoked. In the period of time my sibling was POA he misappropriated a significant amount of money. Over $150,000 alone, went to pay his and his wifes VISA bills over a period of months. Al this was done without my fathers knowledge. This was done through online banking. My father is 88 years...
Maybe this could have been tacked onto an existing topic, however it seems worthy of it's own discussion.

I have some questions for the forum re: index-linked GICs. I have some funds that I will need in two years. I want them to get (or at least have chance of getting) better than the 2.2% top rate for high interest savings. Need the principal in two years so can't risk a loss. My questions:
1. Other than the above am I missing any no risk options - please don't flame me with mattress ;)
2. Of the index-linked GICs, other than surfing...
He has 2 joint bank accounts at a membership CDIC bank and 2 joint brokerage accounts at a membership CIPF brokerage. Same set of joint accounts at both the bank and the brokerage, where he is the primary holder of one account and the wife is the primary holder of the other. Between the couple, with the specified categories as stated in both CDIC and CIPF, only 100k is covered in CDIC but 2 million is covered...
I'm in Canada, trying to do a VISA International Money transfer via TD Easyweb to a friend in the USA. With each credit card we try, I get the error message:
Please try a different card
The card you tried to add is not eligible for this type of transfer, or is not a valid card.
I called VISA Corp. and they said they knew nothing about this, and that I should speak with my bank. I called TD and all the rep. could suggest was...
As of today Scotia iTrade ISA funds DYN5005 and DYN6005 are offering 4.65% interest which is much better than the competition at RBC/TD, etc. Link here:
However, I haven’t found an efficient way to deal with USD transfers. It seemed to me that opening a USD savings account with Scotia bank would be the way to go, but unfortunately you won’t be able to use it to transfer USD funds from/to itrade. I tried this myself and also called...
I would appreciate help from the collective wisdom here regarding CDIC coverage limits.
The CDIC website indicates a limit of $100,000 per account 'per category' and I'm not sure what a 'category' is.
Here's the question: the wife and I each have unregistered cash accounts at TDDI with 2 x 5 rung GIC ladders in each account. The rungs are 25K each for 125K per ladder, 250K per account. Each ladder has 2 or 3 issuers (TD Bank, EQ...
Hi, we have decided to sell our condo that was bought in 2007 in Montreal. Condo currently is rented but the tenants will be leaving soon. We are selling but the intention is to buy a duplex.
We have been the only ones doing the administration work for the building ( 11 apartments) and don’t want to deal will 11 units and their complains and issues anymore. The value of condo is increased a lot. We lived in the condo for 7 years and have been...
