How is VPL as an investment for Japan ? It tracks mainly the japanese market.....today, the japanese index went up by 2% while the price of VPL just went up by 0.5%......It has been trading around this price forever......is this particular ETF messed up or is this not a good time to invest in Japan??
Tripped over this by accident. I've read about the concept of the 130/30 long/short fund but this is the first application of the method I've seen in Canada. Sounds great in theory but in practice you better be one heck of a stock picker or have a superior proprietary black box methodology lol

BROMPTON 130/30 EQUITY FUND ANNOUNCES INITIAL PUBLIC OFFERING
Toronto, July 30, 2007: Brompton Funds...
I've come to realize that individual stock picking is a fool's game better left to professionals. ETFs give me the diversification and security of the entire index. Individual stocks are very volatile, and sometimes their movements make no sense at all, unlike the TSX composite, Dow, or the S&P. I've been burnt by individual stocks far more than I have been with ETFs.
The fact is, most professionals can't even beat the major indexes, so it's a...
I'm about to get involved in the US stock market again.
When I was in before, I had both my US stocks and my Canadian stocks in the one (Royal Bank) investment account, although they were two separate currencies. Both were downloaded into Quicken and I found it difficult to track them because it looked like they were all Canadian dollars although that wasn't the case.
I now have a Scotiabank investment account and am thinking of Putting all...
I am thinking of adding some preferred shares to my Cash accnt.
I am interested in Cnd. Utility preferred CU.PR.A-T Yield 5.69% or the B series Yields 5.89%.The consensus on Cnd. Utility is an Underperform, the price history seems to be stable.I know that interest rates affect utilities.
Should I be looking for something else and would you consider this a fixed income investment.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.
I would greatly appreciate comments on the following closed end funds which I am thinking of buying one or the other outside my rrsp.
DPS.UN-T NAV. 21.60 close to yearly lows Yield=5.5% versus
INC.UN-T NAV. 19.60 close to yearly lows Yield=11% I have never owned a closed end fund.I looked up their distribution and they seem to have maintain them efficently for a good period of time but now their value has dropped quite a lot.
This one seems interesting to me. The company itself is 80 years old, but was only spun off as a trust in 2001. The company was originally a fish packing company, but has used the extra valuation to snap up some competitors.
It sells in the US and Canada, and one of the more recognizable brands is Clover Leaf. They basically sell canned tuna, salmon, sardines, etc.
I have a friend who is about 100K invested by the Bank in 4 laddered Term deposits earning about 4% to maturity. (next year on) Would she be better off buying strip bonds instead?
4% away from a 52 week low. Strong balance sheet. 5 year revenue, earnings, and dividend growth rates are greater than 10 year growth rates. Current TTM PE is around the 10 year avg low PE. Current yield is around the 10 year avg high yield.
Another one of those out of favour blue chip large caps.
Disclosure: I do not currently have a position. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. People should do their own research and make their own...
On the New York Stock exchange this morning, after their announcement of quarterly earnings, they took a huge hit (25%+) on earnings that were not all that bad, from what I see.
Anybody have any stock in this? Anybody know why the huge hit for not so bad statements?
Anybody think it might be a good time to get in for a rebound?
Takeovers by Swiss companies. Takeovers by American companies. By London based companies. By Chinese companies. By Russian companies. By Australian companies. By Brazillian companies. By Finnish companies. Companies from every country in the world are tripping over themselves to buy our undervalued, under-owned resource companies. Fighting over themselves to do it...then going on to post record profits, and hit all time high stock prices...
I have been investing in mutual fund, and lately exchange trade fund in the past four years. I did all these by reading jouralist reommendations, visiting this and the morningstar website.
As my portfolio grows, I now feel the need to have a better understanding of mutual fund/ETF. Are there any fundamental analysis of mutual fund/ETF? Could anyone suggest references on this topic?

sorry but this is a newbie question that may have been already dealt with in another post (I did a search but couldn't find an anwer).
Our FP has suggested we include REITs in our mutual fund portfolio. We are looking for low-moderate risk medium-term investments (5 years or less).
My concern, as I expressed to our FP, is that I am not so sure about getting into real estate investment at what I believe is the top of a market that is...
Here's another one to look at for anyone interested. Its called Strategic
Resource Acquistion, SRZ on Toronto. They are restarting an old zinc mine complex in Tennessee, shut down in 2002 due to low zinc prices. Fully funded, with involvment from Sprott Asset Management (the gold standard for CDN mining).
Based on current guidance, and zinc price of $1.60/lb, they are trading at about 1.7 times 2008 CF, about 3 times earnings. They are looking...
It's been months since I posted and I want to start using this site more...
My question is, what sources are you using to purchase stocks?
Currently, I use ROBTV Market Call for my Canadian stocks...only 4 at the moment, use globeinvestor, then make a decision. A person I met online told me about this great investor in the states that has amazing results.
The site he recommended is bluechipgrowth.com. Read the bio...fee is...
All of the round lots filled, but had some trouble with the odd lots. At first they didn't fill, then they just disappeared (i.e. were cancelled by the system). When I called IB Customer Service, they explained that not all exchanges accept odd lots, so when you use SMART routing, and they get to the exchange, they just get cancelled.
I got an odd lot by choosing ISLAND. AMEX apparently won't take odd lots...
I own c.i.b.c. preferred share (CM.PR.H.T) present price 24.50.Could this pr.share be affected by the risk that cibc is involved in the u.s. sub-prime .
Your comments would be appreciated.
In my Investment Policy Statement it refers to Bond Funds that would pay us Capital Gains compared to Interest Income:
Quote: For bonds, there are numerous alternatives ranging from bond funds using derivatives to reduce the tax burden to funds and ETFs investing in preferred shares. Trend carefully when choosing your bond-type investments as preferred shares can be riskier than many bonds and derivative structures can quickly drive up costs....
I am a Canadian trader about to become a non-resident. I guess the options for CDN online brokers are very limited (virtually zero) once you become a non resident. Can anyone tell me what US online brokers offer the best service / lowest commissions for trades on Cdn markets (just equity transactions, medium volume - 300-400 trades / quarter)? Has anyone been through this process before (trader moving offshore)? I need a margin account with the...
Perhaps this
should go in the BCE thread, but my question is what does it bode for a TD shareholder?
TD Bank to take $4-billion stake in BCE
NEW YORK, TORONTO — Toronto-Dominion Bank has agreed to commit about $4-billion in capital to help finance the record takeover of BCE Inc., including purchasing a half-billion dollars worth of equity that will give the bank a 7-per-cent ownership stake in the telecommunications company, according to...
How typical are these pullbacks in June and through the summer? It looks like a really good buying opportunity is approaching, especially if the TSE goes down another 500 points or so. I'm eying Fortis, BMO and CIBC at this point. Fortis hasn't actually declined much, but it seems to be so unsexy that it sometimes gets overlooked for dividends. Generally, how do people feel about the interest rate jitters and the like? Just wondering. Thanks...
Just throwing it out there... I purchased Gamehost Income fund a little while ago (a few month) and it is doing quite well.
Anyone else owns it here? I did some research for the gaming industry and they compare very well to other casinos. That is actually why I invested in them...
I purchased TH a little while back and it has been making me $'s.
Naturally, I like it because it did well for me... but what do you guys think about this company? How should I decide when it is time to sell?
I am new to this investments business, read a little about it, found something I liked and got lucky. Would be nice to get input from experienced investors.
Any recommendations of a good CDN online broker for shorting stocks? I use etrade right now and run into the following issues:
- No shorting of TSXV stocks (regardless of price)
- No shorting of stocks priced below $5.00
- Delay in finding out if shares available to borrow (often 3-5 mins)
- Often unable to borrow the security (even though I can borrow the stock at my full service broker).
The one thing I require I that you can short stock...
As part of the ongoing arguments discussions of stocks vs. trusts, I am curious as to how many of these FWF posters hold. This poll is on the number of individual stocks in a portfolio .
How many individual stocks do you own? For the purposes of this thread, consider voting and non-voting shares in the same company to be one stock holding. Do not count stocks held in ETFs or mutual funds.
I haven't been too successful in calculating by looking at funds in Globefund, which funds actually pay out the best dividend income. I have most of my investment in RBC Canadian dividend, and less in iShares Cdn Div, but seem to be getting more distributions from iShares.
If you had $25k to invest in dividend funds to get dividend income, what would you buy?
Hi! I was hoping to get some suggestions as to what to purchase to replace my Bell Shares. It would be held in my RRSP. I am looking for something conservative, blue chip with a decent yield. Thanks in advance.

As a result of holding Teresen in a DRIP account, I found I was left with 41 shares of Kinder which I did not sell. Because I no longer have a SD box I deposited them into my TDWH President's US acct. this past Jan. Now Kinder has redeemed (?) these shares and had I not placed them with TDWH I would have received then money some weeks ago. However TDWH seems to have a problem. The shares now show in my acct. with a zero balance and I was told...
I have no discretionary cash for the market right now, but if I did have, I would buy National Bank, Bank of America and Bank of Nova Scotia. My luck..... when I can buy them the price will be much higher, just my opinion.
I'm a french investor based in Paris. Two years ago I read the book of Benjamin Graham, The Intelligent Investor , the bible for value investors. I was impressed by it and decided to make my site. Sorry, it's one more about this subject, but I hope it is different.
Concerning canadian investors, this page is more specific :
Can anyone recommend a free charting site where you can pull up on one screen say (4-6) charts at one time that can then be saved for future reference?
I would like to show a couple basics on each chart like RSI, MACD, etc.
investors who crave income are often tempted to load up on high-yielding stocks in the telecommunications and utilities industries, the moderate yields of boring old banks would actually be a better choice

Ok, looking at the Dec/09 contract, $60 strike price, and punching into a Black Scholes calculator, fixing implied volatility at 0%, I get the contract pricing in an annual interest rate of 0%.
What's going on here?
Can I make money on this with my (registered) portfolio by converting my S&P500 holdings to an equivilant notional value in SPY options, and investing the balance of cash in T-bonds with a similar maturity?
Most financial bubbles are pretty easy to spot: An asset class climbs way beyond what old-fashioned valuation measures used to define as reasonable, market participants start acting like idiots, and pundits rationalize the madness with learned “new era” theories. Think late-90s tech stocks or California houses in 2005 or today’s Shanghai stock market. This kind of...
Can anybody recommend some low cost Asian and emerging markets index funds?
I know EEM and EPP are for these 2 indexes. But they are in US dollar. I see US dollar is going down really. I don't want to convert my Canadian dollar into US dollar.
