I've been investing for about 20 years, starting with RRSPs, mutual & index funds, individual stocks. All on my own. Eventually, however, I found websites like FWF which are great sources of information for investors just like me.
Over the years I've seen many stocks that were horrendously overvalued, and frequently I've been proven right. But I've never had the courage to jump in and actually short a stock.
Perhaps this helps to explain the proliferation of ETFs Exchange traded funds feed many The main advantage of ETFs, once over the commission hurdle, is that they offer a reduced annual expense ratio. An investor share of Vanguard's traditional, total-market index fund charges 0.19 percent per year. The ETF equivalent charges only 0.07 percent ($70 per year on $100,000).
Out there in the rest of the financial world, it's a different picture....
What are your views on Ethical funds? Worhty to invest in, or more like a marketing scheme? Ethical funds' Special Equity fund seems to be a good small-cap fund.
I did not see one of those threads in Stock Picking.
If one exists, I'll gladly move the post there.

The New Power of the Mining Giants
In Spiegel Online.
The natural resources industry is going through significant changes. A handful of mining corporations are making record profits and have taken control of the global market. But the longer the boom continues, the greater the risks. Is it still worth...
I just bought $2000 (24 shares) of XIU in my Scotia self directed account for my monthly RRSP contribution. Anyways, XIU was trading at 81.35 when I bought it and I could even see my purchase on tsx.com for 24 shares on the day I bought it. I logged onto Scotia that night and confirmed the $81.35 price. I log onto my account today and notice that my cost per share is $83.14 or in other words they charged me $42 for the trade - around 2%...
Would you consider adding to XBB-t or buying XSB-T at this present time.
Considering the market correction happening, these two bond etf's are only down pennies and are offerinf 4% + yield.Investment would be in my rsp.Your comments would be greartly appreciated.

Hello everyone. I'm a new subscriber and I'm totally blind. I use a computer with synthetic speech that reads the text on the screen to me aloud. Unfortunately it can't deal with graphics, including technical chart graphs. So I'm looking for tools and resources that provide this information in an accessible or text based format. If anyone can assist, please get in touch. Thanks in advance and if there's already a post I apologize because I...
I've had a couple of emails recently asking what I think are basic questions about preferred shares. That got me to thinking that maybe it's time to post a FAQ.
Any interest here? Any particular questions you want answered?
While we're at it, any interest in FAQs on other topics?
Uranium just got hotter
Merger capitalizes on a metal that has soared 500% since 2003
ANDY HOFFMAN
04:11 EDT Tuesday, June 05, 2007
In the rapidly shifting uranium sector, where the price of the metal used to make nuclear fuel has soared more than 500 per cent since 2003, the aggressive deal maker has prospered.
Few have been more willing to pull the trigger on a takeover than Toronto's sxr Uranium One Inc. , which...
I was lamenting the absence of REITs in our portfolio when I realized that they must be included in the indices we own. (TSX and Wilshire 5000 in the form of CIBC Index funds). But for the life of me I can't come up with an actual percentage in each.
Anyone know the answer, or any suggestions on where to find it?
I'm thinking of CV Technologies specifically which has had their trading halted for I think at least a couple of months now. How long can a company not trade at all? Another example would be Neteller which is based out of Calgary, but trades on the FTSE ....they've been halted going on 6 months now after the US ban on Internet gaming.
Someone, I think yogi, was looking for this... State Street Global Advisors (SSgA)... launching the first international real estate exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States.
Fund companies have been working on international real estate funds in a major way over the past six months, as investors – who have become increasingly enamored by real estate as an asset class – look to diversify away from a perceived bubble in U.S. markets.......
I've been looking for this discussion on another thread, but can't find much, so I apologize if this has been discussed before.
I'm wondering what people think about DFA, particularly given the fact that it is only available through an advisor and therefore adds about 1% (on top of MERs) to your costs. Do people feel the value added makes up for the additional costs (compared to say ETFs or index funds)?
I'm just starting some research on trusts. I want to split some money between 2 as a way to maintain a little capital stability for a lump money that I might need over the next 3 years, while reaping the distributions at a healthy rate = 8%+. I am willing to take on a little risk to get this type of return. For example, I could handle a 10-15% loss in unit value, but not a 50% loss. I plan to hold these for about 3 - 4 years.
A few years ago I opened an online trading account and bought a few stocks I thought represented good value. However, I did not really follow up on their performance until just recently.
Two of the stocks, Ballard and Bombardier, were bought at a very high price and I know see how much they have suffered in recent times. The investments were not very large, but my question is whether I should buy more of each stock now in order to lower...
This is the first trust where its privatization could impact one of my debt holdings. I have some of their 6.25% convertibles. Are these apt to be redeemed now? Last trading at $108.50 and I'd hate to find myself receiving $100.00.

In building my portfolio, I'm having trouble deciding between the above three. PH&N & TD seem to have grown their NAV and give a yield of about 6% (?), wheras HYM.UN's NAV has more or less stayed the same over the year, but its monthly yield seems higher (about 8%).
How do I go about doing an analysis of these three and coming to a conclusion !?
Also TD sems to have done better over the last year - do you think this will continue ?
The Hunter-Dickinson Group out of Vancouver are behind it, and are taking a rather unique approach to a company's entry into the diamond producing sector.
They've been very successful with Anooraq, and Northern Dynasty, to name two that I've made money on. This is their latest fresh lifecycle company, and first diamond producer. Instead of raising money to explore, they have raised money, acquired three...
Based out of Bermuda. Trades on the NYSE. P/E of 5. Trades at book value, 3% dividend (which I presume is exempt from the IRS for Canadians). Solid growth in assets, earnings, and revenue.
Its in the re-insurance business.
What should I know before investing in a re-insurance business? I know insurers are hard to evaluate on financials, but why would I buy this instead of buying, for instance, Berkshire Hathaway (or conversely, why would I...
As part of the ongoing arguments discussions of stocks vs. income trusts, I am curious as to how many of these FWF posters hold. This poll is on the number of individual trusts in a portfolio .
How many individual trusts do you own? For the purposes of this poll, do not count 'trusts of trusts' like SDT.UN, ETFs like XRE, or mutual funds.
Is Vanguard's new FTSE All-World ex-US (VEU) offering comparable to iShares' EFA in holdings or is it somewhat more broadly based? I can't find a list of VUE's holdings.

I've been looking at some time series from various funds and have a question about the freqency of fees for a typical mutual fund/etf.
Typically, how is the fee taken from a mutual fund. For example, if the MER is at 2.4%, should you expect to see about 2.4%/250 removed from the fund every trading day or would you more likely see a big drop 2.4%/12=0.2% every month?
I was thinking it would be nice to be able to strip out the fee before...
Just a head's up for anyone interested in doing some due diligence on a newly-listed TSX company. Actually it's not trading yet. I participated in the ipo through Etrade but I was allotted only 1/2 of what I ordered. The ipo was priced at $12.25.
The long-form prospectus in on sedar now. One thing that stood out immediately was that they plan on instituting a dividend of $1.20/yr. At least that's how I read it. Do your own due diligence.
What's Wrong With ETFs? They encourage frequent trading, which helps Wall Street more than investors, says the father of the index fund.
Let's say you're an index investor who wants a large stake in the S&P500. Is there a good reason to opt for a more expensive S&P500 index fund as opposed to a less expensive S&P500 ETF? (Where the comparison includes commissions and fees.)
In other words, what do folks think about Boogle's argument for...
If you happen to hold a trust or trust of trusts that made a special distribution at year end there is another wrinkle. SIN.UN, OGF.UN, HTE.UN are I think examples ( I have not got around to doing my taxes yet!) .
These trusts made a CG distribution that was not paid out (but caused the unit value to go up). This special CG should apparently be ADDED to your ACB. The Brompton and SCITI sites explain this.
Day in and day out, company after company, i can't believe how lousy the earnings have been in Q1.
I realize that the market looks ahead 6 mos. and that this may be irrelevant in the big picture, but I don't see much reason to take new positions in stocks in this kind of environment.
I have just sold 40% of my equity position (good or bad) all with gains of 15%+.sold basiclay for confort at this time in the market.
I would like to know if it would be wise to place this money in 60% XSB-T&40%XBB-T.Would a market correction de value these two ETF bond positions. or should I simply put this money in a cash performer fund like Altimera.
Your comments will be greatly appreciated
This is a junk bond fund that yields 7%. It pays a dividend every month, an attractive proposition, since dividends here are taxed at 15%. Is this really a dividend? Don't bonds pay interest/income that's taxed at the worst rates?
In countless threads here and discussions elsewhere, the subject of whether trusts/some trusts were ponzi schemes or not has generated a huge amount of bandwidth heated bandwidth.
arnyk posted some good info on how to figure out what's going on. He draws his info from the statement of cash flows. Shawn Allen has a couple of quick reads on the statement of cash flows here and here . They are some of the best explanations that I've seen of a...
Sounds like most of the users of this forum are either stock pickers or selectively passive investors using some ETFs to supplement their individual stock picks.
Perhaps this survey will give us all a feel for the investment landscape here.
Feel free to comment if I missed your investing domain
I would like to hear your opinion on which fund you would prefer to use to meet your EM allocation.
Two funds in Canada come to mind,
TD Emerging Markets - ER=2.88%
seem pretty straightforward, nothing tricky in the holdings. Looks like straight ownership of securities and the fund seems to track the MSCI Emerging Markets Index slightly better then the CIBC fund.
CIBC Emerging Markets Index - ER=1.28%
Tracks the MSCI pretty darn...
So, just so the mutual fund investors won't feel left out of the polls in Stock Picking on the number of trusts or stocks that you own - how many mutual funds do you own, excluding MMFs? Since mutual funds are more diversified than stocks, I have narrowed the selection ranges considerably.
Here's a little gem of a company. They just reported $.81 in earnings a couple of days ago, which translates into a p/e of only 5, despite having a ROE of over 20%.
It's thinly traded and management owns about 36% of the outstanding shares.
The stock has done nothing the past 2 years but over the long term, it's been a stellar performer.
I just sold out of some positions and have 60,000. to reinvest in my rsp.
I have the following etf's.
XIN-T=33,000.
XSP-T=14,000.
XEG-T=11,000.
XFN-T=23,000.
XMA-T=8500.
I dont own any XIU-T at this present time (mistake)
All the etf's have reached there 52 highs.
Is it time to stay away until a correction comes along or jump in on dips buy the XIU-T say 25,000. and wait for other opportunities.
I am running at present at a 55% passive and 45%...
