Scotiabank makes investments in Peru. What do you guys think about this? I like this becuase it seems like I will run bank that they are buying and with this new investment bns will control a bigger market share in Peru. I think this could be great for long term growth.

apologies for the repetitive nature of this thread and if my questions are basic. Im new to investing speculatively.
I have some fun cash and ive been looking at TOU PEY or VET give how well these stocks have been performing since the low prices in 2020. a couple questions:
1. is this a good time to go into the energy sector given it's cyclic nature? is there still room for growth, specifically for TOU. My research tells me that we could be on...
I purchased this product a year ago. It has done noting but been in a significant negative hole since then. I understand the bond and interest rate impact.
I've been buying this one lately, mainly because of the apparent extreme undervaluation (as suggested by TD....and to a lesser extent, other brokerage houses). It's apparently being sold off because of an ill-advised venture into Portugal which has not been profitable and which has resulted in a major writedown. But the asset is a very small part of the Company and yet the market is acting like it's a really big deal.
Hate to ask this, but its part of our reality now.
What if the current Israel-Hamas war expands to other other regions and the markets completely crash.
Would you sell right away, or would you hold??
I admit I am highly skeptical of Bitcoin and other crypto currencies, however, as I hear institutional buying has just begun to increase, I wonder if my view of this as a bubble is underinformed and wondering what am I missing? While I can see some of the benefits of blockchain technology, the recent moves in crypto is giving me a nosebleed.
Decided to post this poll to see how other FWFers are viewing...
For rate reset preferred shares, is it true that one has the option to redeem the shares at par value every 5 years after the issue date? Someone told me that if I hold it for at least 5 years there wouldn't be any capital loss so it's very safe.
However, I read the prospectus of a few recent rate-resets (e.g. but cannot find it anywhere (under the redemption section) that talks about that. Not sure if I am missing something.
Consider this before dumping Canadian banks Skeptics will argue that past performance can’t guarantee future returns, and Veritas absolutely agrees. The report’s co-authors, Ohad Lederer and Yuting Liu, are the first to acknowledge that the next 20 years are likely to be rougher than the last 20 years.
However, Mr. Lederer makes a good counter point. Even if the banks churn out results half this good, meaning that if you buy at the current...
I've been itching to short this stock for a long time, but I've decided that I'll wait for a technical signal first.
Yesterday's down movement was good enough for me; last night Richard Croft on Market Call Tonight suggested a bearish spread as well.
Today I took the plunge, using Montreal's exchange no less. Basically, it's almost a 50/50 bet: limited upside = $12 (best case: stock below CA$65), limited downside = $13 (worst case: stock above...
Hi All
I like the idea of cheap passive index investing rather than active management.
Are there any all in one passive index ETFs which cover the entire world's stock/bond market and provide the option of 80equity/20fixed or 70/30 or 60/40 ??
I have about $200k of cash. I want to take equities (probably BMO ETFs) out of my RRIF and put the cash in and invest in fixed income inside the RRIF to improve my tax position. I could sell the equities and re-purchase in my cash trading account but there could be large spreads as well as commissions. Any ideas how this could be achieved at lowest cost?
Thanks
Dark One
I've been keeping track of ENB and have decided to look at it more closely if the price drops to the $33 - 34 range. At that range the dividend yield is about 3.3%. The company seems strong and their dividend has been slowly rising over the years.
I left TD investing for Questrade over a year ago. Got an email today from TD as if I were still an Investing customer there, asking me to fill in a survey.
I had a limit order in today to sell Bombardier 'good for the day'.
500 shares were sold earlier and after noon I changed my order on webbroker to expire not today but tomorrow.
Shortly after the price for the stock rose but I had to wait a long time until the rest of my order was executed. I watched on level II about 100,000 shares being traded before I got rid of mine.
Apparently when you make a change to the order, even if it is only the...
Does anyone have experience with, or an opinion on, National Bank Discount Brokerage's Fully-Paid Securities Lending Program ?
My understanding is the program allows you to lend stocks/ETFs in your non-registered account through the brokerage and share the consequent income. In their example, they illustrate a 'potential' (best case?) 4% return 'with no extra work' -- what's the catch?
BMOIL has introduced a concentration limit with respect to margin accounts, video here .
This isn't impacting me but the way it seems to work makes me think I'm misunderstanding some aspect of it. From what I can see you can have a portfolio that doesn't trigger the concentration issue but if one of your holdings increases in value you could trigger it because the Loan Value (as defined in the video) could rise to the point that the loan value...
hi all - im a passive investor in s single world etf, VEQT and recently a friend was suggesting that i switch to fidelity global innovator class mutual fund which is private and only available through a licensed agent. the mer is obviously a lot higher than my etf but she said the fund would outperform VEQT because its managed by people who are also invested in the fund. is there any truth to this or is she just trying to sell it to me?
When opening a brokerage account, there's an item called Disclosure of Beneficial Information in the application form.
Can I choose You do object to keep my privacy? Or, is it one of those tricky questions that one must agree to? What are the costs referred to under the second it option?
Choices are below:
1.
You do not object to disclosing your name, address, email address.... and securities holding of a Canadian reporting issuer which you...

Hazelview Investments, a private money manager that specializes in commercial real estate, has halted redemptions on its $1.4-billion Four Quadrant fund, a move that prevents its retail investors from cashing out, even as Hazelview’s new private equity backer earns a fixed 7.95-per-cent annual return. The rise and fall of Moderna’s share price is not just a remarkable distillation of how a global disaster played out in the stock market. It should also serve as a reminder that investing themes are perishable, even if it feels in the moment like this time is truly different.
Moderna’s stock has now declined by 85 per cent from its peak. On Wednesday, it closed at US$76.35 – almost exactly where it was trading three years ago. That was just...

Covered call income generating strategy on US treasuries
I understand there are two kinds of risks with this ETF
1) Interest Rate Risk - higher interest rate reduces underlying bond/treasury price
2) Volatility Risk - lower volatility reduces call premiums
The only other options I see in the covered call on bonds.treasuies are TLTW

A new subject only to get the status right. I first acquired this one in 2006 and have added to my holding several times since. News released yesterday (12 May 2010) published in Globe and Mail and on company web-site that Crescent Point will purchase all of a privately held firm -Shelter Bay Energy at what appears to be a record price per flowing barrel. Shelter Bay was created by Crescent Point in 2008 which owns 21 percent of Shelter Bay and...
I am wondering if anyone can explain what a split preferred share is. The way I see it, a company is set up, collects money from preferred shares and common shares issued, invests the money is whatever their propectus states, then pays set dividends to the preferred investors, and common stock investors get capital appreciation if the scheme works out. Is this correct?
I have a taxable joint account for which the income is not being used.
I could DRIP the distributions but I would still need to pay tax on them. (That's correct, right? I've never DRIPPED a taxable account before).
What I'm really looking for is an ETF that produces zero distributions. Currently this account is mostly VBAL.
I'm looking around myself but any help will be much appreciated.
I'll be opening up an investment account for my corporation soon, and I'm wondering if I should consider something else other that TDDI which holds my personal investments?
I'm a buy and hold forever kinda investor, so there'll only be a few transactions per year. Are there any differences between a corporate account vs a personal one? Aside from not being having RRSP and TFSA accounts obviously.
I just got a mailing from Brookfield that included a 128 page book, regarding accepting an offer to exchange BN for some kind of BNRE hybrid share that can then be converted back to BN or to normal BNRE. At least I think I have this right. My BN shares are held in a TFSA.
I don't have the time or inclination to assess the merit of exchanging shares, and was wondering if anyone who also owns BN has an opinion.
Can anyone shed some light of what I can do now please...
Just noticed stock ACHHY (Aluminum Corporation Of China) be delisted and I have 200 shares in my US account (TDDI) from many years ago.

I am a Canadian who worked in the US for 13 years and has a decent IRA there held By TD Waterhouse. I am mostly invested in Vanguard ETF and do not trade much apart from RMD. I now live back in Canada.
I just received notice that my account is being moved over to Schwab in September.
I do not know Schwab, and I have no idea if they know how to deal with Canadians.
So I am wondering whether it is OK to let my account go there, or should I...
Trying some of Yielder's bottom finishing algorithms I came across HCG which provides alternative mortgage services.
Just wanted to ask if anybody of you guys follow this company.
Their PE ratio slided back to 14, almost no debt and almost 1B in market cap, constantly rising dividend.
However, I think that price/book value of more than 3.5 is a little too high.
Any thoughts are welcome.
I was thinking that I could use an ETF to mimic an annuity. Because we all know that once you buy an annuity, you loose your capital in exchange for lifetime monthly returns. So, what if we could still keep the capital while making similar returns?
Background: 65-yrs old single male, total portfolio: $1 million, no debt. 50% invested in taxable account, 50% in various registered accounts.
For annuity: Single-male 65 years old, no guarantee...
Time for the little sleeper to wake-up? An answer to those who doubted the sustainability of its dividend (29 cents / quarter).
TORONTO, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Laurentian Bank of Canada (LB.TO: Quote) said on Friday its third-quarter profit rose 63 percent on strong interest income and loan growth.
The Montreal-based bank, Canada's seventh largest, had net income of C$15.8 million ($13.3 million), or 54 Canadian cents per share, up from C$9.7...
Dividend 15 Split Corp. Is anyone buying this? Is anyone looking at it? I know the dividend has been stopped but it sure looks compelling. Buying a bit at these prices.
Vanguard today announced the final September 2023 cash distributions for certain Vanguard ETFs, listed below, that trade on Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). Unitholders of record on October 02, 2023 will receive cash distributions payable on October 10, 2023.
SNC is down $10 today, from 48 to 38, the worst drop in 20 yrs
This is a company with billions of dollars in revenues. That $35 million story in the news today just does not seem to justify the price drop... Sure, the 2011Q4 report will be delayed, but I can wait a month. I don't think this company is permanently damaged and is worth 20% less than it was yesterday.
Anyone buying?
(I have a small position already)
I owned this back in 2015 and 2016 and did very well.i sold thinking it had run It's coarse. I did some research lately and realized I made a mistake. The stock has terrific growth,ROE,ROC and no debt. It has been a major provider of software services to a wide range of sectors both private and public sector. Clearly they know how to deploy their capital. According to my screening their PE is 19 which isn't bad for a IT company with these...
Why do so many investing articles and people giving advice refer to AA ETF's (XGRO, VBAL, etc.) as being for beginners? I consider myself an experienced investor who has tried all kinds of investing styles over the decades and I've ultimately ended up building my portfolio using an AA ETF. Sure, you pay a bit extra but you gain so much simplicity and fees are still super low.
I think these products are great for virtually anyone with the...
Hi! I'm on a stump and looking for some technically-savvy forum contributors. :geek:
I've been reading some on tipswatch.com, trying to understand the behavior of TIPS on the secondary market. The one thing I can't grasp of the Yield as displayed on the Wall Street Journal.
If you look at the last 2 examples, WSJ lists both as giving similar yields. One has a 0.625% coupon and is deeply discounted. The other has 2% and is less discounted. Can...
Do any of you invest in active CCPCs purely to access the lifetime capital gains exemption (LCGE)? I have not yet used mine. I generally invest only in ETFs and skew toward small cap value. I would imagine that to invest with a goal of using my LCGE, I would need to be in a sector like venture capital, where returns are primarily capital gains (or more often total losses) as opposed to dividend yield, and exits are the name of the game. Not my...
Searched and couldn't find a thread on this but please point me to one if there is! I have RBC Direct Investing and purchased an ETF that wasn't DRIP-eligible (ZDI.TO) but didn't realize at the time. Distributions are paid monthly and I'd love to have them setup to be drip-eligible.
Has anyone else had success with calling/lobbying RBCDI to switch a fund to be Drip-eligible?
I called the number that pops up beside the 'No' and...
