Anyone can share their experiences on estates administration at different discount brokerages? Currently I am doing research for the family and through other forums, dealing with estates with the discount brokerages seems can be a disaster (so far I have only read about BMOIL and NBDB). Mainly the bank side doesn't really deal with the discount brokerage side of things, ie won't provide legal advice/assistance. Therefore, the executor ends up...
I made a small trade yesterday in my new AD account. Because the bank account was not yet linked (I had to call and link it), I purchased a small amount of BA.UN on margin (rounding out my BCE spinoff to a board lot and a lower price than the one at which I sold my Aaliant position). Today, when I went to transfer funds in from the now-linked bank account, it would not allow the full transfer because of a hold on a cheque deposited Thursday. The...
So Wealthsimple just launched a platform where you can buy any stock or ETF with zero commissions, zero account minimums, basically zero everything except forex.
Its called Wealthsimple Trade and is currently only available for taxable accounts.
We have ongoing threads for what people are buying and selling, which are interesting and useful as research starting points, but I think it would also be interesting to have a thread on stocks people don't even consider, and why.
I'll start off with saying I don't own or currently consider any telecom stocks, except maybe Rogers. I think the risk is just too high of technology wiping out large swaths of their revenues, and would even go as...
We are looking for a Canadian ETF to invest into, I have extensively researched vdy and like actually that it’s heavier on financials because the banks in Canada are well protected.
After researching all of the stocks in the vdy etf,
I’ve learned that a lot of the stocks are some of the high dividend stocks, like BCE with produce a high dividends, but don’t really have growth.
The best stocks I found inside vdy after doing the research were...
Tip of the hat to James Hymas, T+1 Settlement is Coming! « PrefBlog
The SEC has announced SEC.gov | SEC Finalizes Rules to Reduce Risks in Clearance and Settlement Washington D.C., Feb. 15, 2023 —
The Securities and Exchange Commission today adopted rule changes to shorten the standard settlement cycle for most broker-dealer transactions in securities from two business days after the trade date (T+2) to one (T+1). The final rule is designed to...
(I saw the very long thread on BMO IL… hope it's okay to start a new one for this specific topic.)
I have BMO CAD+USD chequing accounts and a BMO IL self-directed account. (And get commissions reduced to $7 from $10 due to their bank at work promotion.)
It appears that transferring money from my CAD+USD chequing accounts into BMO InvestorLine is instantaneous but…
Annoyingly, transferring money out of BMO InvestorLine and back into chequing...
So this is the return of $10,000 of VCIP (20% equity / 80% bonds) over the last five years:
Yikes $11250? After five years that's worse than inflation:
It seems to me that an investor would have been better off with GICs over this period since I think it's true that GICs will at least keep up with inflation (right?).
I've heard it said around here that bonds do poorly in a rising rate environment. I think I understand why: the ETF is...
One weakness at BMO Investorline was that background info on Canadian companies was often not available - This seems to correct that weakness:
Enhanced company information powered by Gl o beInvestor GOLD New!

Is anyone having a problem getting service from TDW - or just me?
Early December I bought a $30k GIC through TDW from AGF Trust. I asked for interest paid annually but when the confirmation came through it was for interest compounded. Ever since, I have been trying to get it changed. I have talked to 5 different TDW reps, all of whom say it can be done but none of whom have done it or even called me back. When I call back I find they have given...
Pretty much as the title says.. looking for something to replace a bit of cash and preferably tax advantaged with preference to major or medium size cities, suburbs,.etc..

Thinking to open an account at Questrade. Asked the customer service and was told it doesn't offer any interest on idle cash nor ISA (investment savings accounts) are available. Any current holders here can share how they go about parking their idle cash there? I'm looking for something liquid but doesn't need to trace buy/sell for tax reporting purpose.
I've been a buyer for RRB/TIPS these days. It is important to note that I plan to hold to maturity. Beside the usual default , fx risks should I be worried? I was sitting on a pile of cash (high interest money market really) since more than a year and now am deploying it.
Am I the idiot who's jumping in the water as everybody's leaving the pool?
Seems like a no brainer with the high yields, especially in real terms and I am...
Continuing from it appears it would be appropriate to open a Topic on Gildan.
What do you like about the balance sheet?
A quick look shows GIL has the same red flags as CTUa .
Please expand.
Red Flag is the increase in inventory. Most of it finished product. They are either planning for a stellar upcoming season or, more than likely, have a bunch of stuff that didn’t move last year. Not a good thing in the fashion industry.
From Gildan...

Please remember our mission of financial education. We'd ask that you please include your rationale for the education of other FWF'ers. Posting that you bought nnn shares of company ABC for $xx without explaining what was behind the decision is just scorekeeping and doesn't really benefit others.

Did anybody just tick the box and are lending their securities. WS is pushing this as well as crypto. Anybody get a payment for this yet?
Remind me — how does stock lending work?
We loan out your fully paid stocks in your self-directed TFSA or non-registered portfolios to other institutional investors, and any earnings on the loan of the security are split between you and Wealthsimple.
Do I still own my stocks?
Absolutely. You still own your...
Hard to believe that this forum has gone three whole weeks with nobody posting on this topic (unless I missed it, in which case I apologize to the poster).
Over time I have had exchanges with some of you as to whether the CPI accurately measures inflation as it affects holders of RRBs, and more particularly, as it affects retirees.
A 1999 Statistics Canada study showed that, by and large, inflation rates were the same for the elderly as for...
I'm aware of Computershare, and of holding stock certificates. In Canada, are there any ways to hold securities directly other than those?
Also, for Computershare, is there a good description somewhere of what they allow you and don't allow you to do with your securities? I find their website FAQ not great.
Lots of chatter about Tesla across a number of topics so maybe it is time to have a dedicated topic to analyze and discuss the stock. I've driven a couple of different Telsa S and been a passenger in a Tesla X. Nice cars and the owners have been very happy with them.
If/when I'm picking stocks it is based on fundamentals and a margin of safety. So where do we start?
Here are sets of data to look at:

Even if Canadian ETF holders aren't owners of Vanguard as are US ETF/fund holders, Bogle's give investors a fair shake principle endures. For me that's still worth something compared to the likes of Blackrock et al, even if it can't be quantified as bps.
Are you sure that Bogle's philosophy endures? I'm [url= wondering. Even the most loyal Bogle fan Taylor Larimore [url= wonders.
I have been investing for a long time in FID231 now converted as FID631. MER is 1.09%, no load, and it worked well IMO, beating index and category.
However Canadian Large Cap is misleading as it owns only 50% Canadian Large Cap.
Now I asked AI Copilot to find me if there was Canadian ETF that would have the same top three holdings. Sure there was; CA31617W5963. But I think that AI Copilot is wrong and it looks to me as another variant of the...
A little over 20 years ago we were in the dot-com bubble. Eyeballs were the thing, but it all collapsed when no one could make money from it. Well eventually that got figured out and the answer was advertising! Give them a search, find their interests, keep data about them and then pepper them with ads. The money was/is made by selling advertising. For us old guys, an electronic Madison Ave.
So what about AI? Just as much hype as dot-com...NVDA...
Despite the glowing reviews from John Heinzl and his analyst contacts, unless I see positive change in the payout ratio covering the dividend coming from either present earnings or free cash flow , AQN won't be going on my watch list any time soon.

Just like there is strong interest by some investing in Renewable Power companies and/or light duty passenger electric vehicles, there is a boutique industry playing somewhat below the radar screen in electric buses, commercial vehicles and even heavier duty vehicles like waste management trucks. NFI is a logical (and Canadian) option for buses, but there is also BYD (Chinese) with a plant in Newmarket to serve North America, and a soon to...

The only new one on that list is Russel Metals. Haven't bought it yet, but looks like the proverbial $20 bill on lying on the street, and no one wants to pick it up.
I had a peek. At ~$21, it doesn't look cheap at all. I'd be a buyer under $16 and preferably under $15 given that it's a cyclical. What are you seeing that makes you think it's a twenty that no one will pick up?
I'm a little bit confused. I did Norbert's Gambit this year and had the brokerage (Scotia iTrade) do an intra-day journal with me over the phone. I bought DLR.U with USD and sold DLR for CAD all within a span of 10 -15 minutes.
Before doing this, I checked with two separate accountants. Both agreed that there should be no gain since I bought and sold DLR immediately. Regardless of the settlement time, I had the proceeds for the sale in my...
Investing using the Vanguard Balanced ETF Portfolio (VBAL) is quite easy. There's no need to do anything other than buy units during accumulation and sell units during retirement. The ETF automatically rebalances its assets internally.
VBAL internally invests into 7 ETFs covering Canadian (VCN), US (VUN), Developed (VIU), and Emerging Market (VEE) stocks, as well as Canadian (VAB), currency-hedged ex-US (VBG), and currency-hedged US (VBU)...
I typically invest in mutual funds. I'd like to invest in my own bank, TD Canada Trust on a monthly basis...I'm not a big investor. Would want to invest maybe $100-200/month, every month. How do I go about investing in TD Bank as part of my monthly PPP?
NOT looking for a debate on the merits of mutual funds vs other investments such as ETF's.
For those of us here that invest in some mutual funds what fund families or funds are you invested in?
I hold a number of Beutel Goodman, Mawer, Phillips, Hager & North and North Growth funds, using their lowest MER funds.
