Well, I saw all the halts go on at 3:55pm today, so . . . grabbed a coffee, sat back, and eagerly awaited the 4:10 show. It was amazing . . . the halts were on issues that were either red, or unchanged on the day. Then at 4:10, all the halts came off and every one of these (about 15 in the particular pane I was steaming live) turned to green! Gotta love the institutional manipulation that has now become almost routine! I've heard there are rules...

Am considering adding a position in ZCH with the dramatic selloff we has seen due to government intervention, however I am concerned there is more bad news to come. That said, I am keeping some dry powder for a 5% portfolio allocation when the dust settles as the Chinese economy is too meaningful to ignore.
Most of these China ETFs seem to have BABA, TCEHY, BIDU, and JD in their top holdings (kind of like Chinese equivalent to FANG stocks) but...
Thursday May 4th - I set a limit Sell order of 300 shares (to expire Friday May 5th).
100 shares sold on Thursday. The remaining 200 shares did not.
Friday rolls around and by midday, the 200 shares aren't selling, so I decided to 'Change' order and drop the limit Sell price by $0.10/share.
100 shares go through, then the remaining 100 shares an hour later.
I have 2 Trade confirmations, each showing a trade fee.
Does that seem...
Hi
I wondering what your opinions might be on investing in Artificial Intelligence/Robotics in general and using a couple of specific ETFs. The one's I'm considering are Horizons Robotics & Automation Index (RBOT) and Robotics & Automation (ROBO).
I'm not wise when it comes to investing so if this sector isn't what you would suggest or if this is a good area for the future but there are better ways to invest in it, Id appreciate the help....
1) Do any Canadian residents invest in any Irish ETFs?
2) Is there a reason that I haven't heard of any Canadians purchasing Irish ETFs for US equity exposure?
3) On an after tax basis, how does CSPX compare with XUS?
4) Anyone know what IBKR charges for access to CSPX?
I'm specifically looking at CSPX (tracks SP500 and does not distribute dividends, so converts foreign dividends into capital gains).
I realize there are existing...
I am just looking for some feedback on this. I own 500 shares of Shopify (SHOP) on the TSE. I sold 5 covered calls on them, all to expire tomorrow. 2 of them @ 67 strike price and 3 of them @ 70 strike price. The stock is up 23.7% on teh day currently and @ 78.00 as I type this. Should I roll any of them? Should I just let them be taken from me? Or should I close them out? Any advice is appreciated! FYI, I bought 200 of them @ $65.00 and the...
A recent discussion over in Clippings made me think this would be a worthy topic on its own:
At the extreme, that would be the lottery ticket approach to investing. Apparently, it is quite popular with some people.
George Ironically, all the super-rich made their fortunes through stock concentration! JD Rockafeller with Standard Oil, Gates, Musk, Ellison, any founder of a successful company, even Buffett!
Would you lock in a 35ish year bond ladder today? buying bonds maturing in 1yr, then 2, then 3 etc...
Logic being to lock in the (by last 15yrs) high rates now? I fancy those folks in the early 80's buying 30yr T-bill where laughing all the way to the bank.
For my FI portfolio, I'm looking at putting 50% in a nominal ladder (bonds) and 50% in a real ladder (i.e. TIPS). To me this ratio hits a sweet spot when holding to maturity since on average...
What is the difference between the two Suncor ticker symbols (SU.U and SU)? All I can find is that the SU.U says Suncor US funds. Its price does not track SU on the NYSE. I'm confused. Suncor's website is not offering much guidance, either.
Bought Cameco in low 40's last year, sold it at 53 or so. Bought it again at low 40's a few weeks ago and now it is on the way up again. Will it go higher this time around? I mean higher than mid 50's. Uranium has jumped a bit in price.
I am looking for some advice on how to handle the Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) on some Brookfield Business Partners LPU shares (BBU.UN) that I originally purchased in 2016. I am posting it here, but maybe it should be in Taxing Situations?
On March 16, 2022 I owned 1030 shares of BBU.UN with an Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) of $33257.50. On March 17, 2022 I received a stock dividend of 515 shares of BBUC from my BBU.UN shares. My March 2022 statement...
After considering Dominic D'Allesandro's responses to the Portus situation, I think this company is worth consideration. I know the price isn't great - $60.99 today - but I can't forget Munger's doctrine that a good company at a fair price is better than a poor company at a good price and MFC has lots of growth potential. But ethical management is worth a premium.
First time in here. The question might have been asked, but since I'm new to this topic, I might have missed it. If so, sorry in advance and don't hesitate to send me a link.
I was told that is was possible for someone, when buying a stock with an investor platform, to get the physical title (I have no idea if it's the correct term used) shipped to you.
Those documents would prove that you are a owner in part of the company...
I have been delving into options over the past couple of years. I primarily sell covered calls but recently started looking other ways to generate income. I am interested in the Iron Condor and seeking more stock ideas for strategy building. Obviously, I am looking for stocks that tend to stay within a limited range and typically don't have too much fluctuation.

Should we be worried?
I'm copying this from PI's post in the dividend hikes section.
This one is special, George Weston Limited Announces $1 Billion Special Dividend George Weston Limited ( Weston ) (TSX: WN) announced today that it will pay a special one-time common share dividend of $1 billion, representing $7.74751 per common share, on January 25, 2011 to all common shareholders of record at the close of business on January 18, 2011.
Having witnessed loads of corruption and greed in the business and political world, I am generally distrustful of popular ideas.
I understand the benefits of broad, low-cost ETFs but the level ETF propaganda is off the charts. It seems like everybody is pro-ETF. I understand why they are popular (cheap, easy, fair) and I own lots myself, but I cannot shake the feeling that the push for ETFs is part of some sinister...
I know this sort of thing has been much debated before but I'm interested in this new offering from BMO.
ZSDB is a discount bond fund holding high credit securities from 1-5 years with a duration of 2.67 years. The current distribution yield is 1.79% but the YTM is 4%. It started life in January of 2022 and only has $ 48 million of assets.
I'm considering holding this security to replace at least part of a 5 year GIC ladder. 2 to 4 year GICs...
I am trying to decide on selecting a MMF or a dividend ETF such as XDIV. Background is I am late 70s and am trying to keep things simple. The money that I am speaking of would be used for a purchase such as a car, so I do not want it locked in but am thinking it will sit at least two years.
XDIV looks enticing because it is taxed lower that a MMF would be. MMF pays lower return at the moment, but principle is safe.
When the re-structuring of BAM took place, I enquired asking how this would affect the PVS split preferreds. My email was directed to shareholderinquiries@tmx.com . Response came from shareholderinquiries+canned.response@tmx.com and said they were looking into it?? Never heard more.
Anyway, I saw this yesterday. May be of interest to some:
Can't say I absorbed all of that, but it seems the distribution won't change.
For the Purpose PSA.TO HISA ETF, I received a voting form for a special meeting of unitholders scheduled virtually for April 21. Haven't seen a reference to it here so I thought I'd mention it. Any thoughts?
Current Investment Objectives:
The fund seeks to maximize monthly income for unitholders while preserving capital and liquidity by investing in high-interest deposit accounts.
Proposed Investment Objectives:

So, I keep comparing these two investment savings accounts offered by TD.
The first one (TDB8150) is a deposit kept in CAD and currently yields 4.05%.
The second (TDB8152) is a deposit kept in USD and currently yields 4.40%.
Besides the conversion rate that comes into effect during a purchase or sale (CAD to USD and vice-versa), is there any reason not to opt for TDB8152 over its Canadian twin? Are there hidden conversion fees or taxes I'm...
There doesn't seem be a dedicated topic for Onex but given their recent acquisition appetite maybe we need one.
This one came from left field, Onex shakes up Canada’s airline industry with all-cash deal to buy WestJet - The Globe and Mail Onex Corp. is buying WestJet Airlines Ltd. for $5-billion, including debt, in a friendly deal announced on Monday morning.
In a joint statement, the companies said Onex will pay $31 a share for Calgary-based...
I am new to the website as well as new to investment. Found this wonderful site while browsing for investment ideas. I have both registered and non-registered accts, and will need to ask you guys for recommendations. But now the 1st Q is about a post I just read, published in Jun 16 2021.
It recommends three gold-rated funds , the first one is Pembroke Growth and Income Fund GBC410 , so I took a look and found it just plunged...
Gluskin Sheff + Associates Inc went public in May at $18.50/share netting the selling shareholders (not the Company) $133,000,000. Ira Gluskin, one of the name partners and selling shareholders, was forever boasting about his wisdom in loading up on Income Trusts for his clients. GS was reputed to hold over $800,000,000 in Income Trusts in their clients' account.
Today GS-T is selling at $13.90 - a loss of 25% for those who bought the much...
Somebody mentioned this ETF to me the other day and I had a look at the perspectus and sales material but a yield of 14% using Canadian dividend payers with no leverage and using covered call. Seems a little optimistic to expect a moving forward 14% yield
As with MRU.SV.A, the runup in price over the past three months makes this one a hold instead of a buy. At a current multiple of 27, it's more than fairly valued. There's probably some discounting of the future contribution of Circle K occuring.
For fun, I logged onto my account and had a peek at my biggest red highlight. Down 28.3% on this one particular stock as of this morning.
It's just a meh for me, as everything I buy is for the long haul only. But it's nice to see the dividends increase month over month, along with the number of shares. I'm happy this one stock pays monthly, and I DRIP everything.
What is your single biggest loser so far? Are you making any changes? Buying...
Does anyone know what's up with russian ADRs like SBRCY?
I happen to have some SBRCY in my TDDI account. All I know is I can't trade them. I don't know if there's anything I should be doing, and more importantly if these might be worth something one day, or not.
I've read mentions of a Russian Federal Law No. 114-FZ about forced cancellation of these ADRs, with some deadlines (that would have elapsed, Nov 10 or Dec 23).
At times like this when the portfolio is in distress for some time interval, I at least want to learn what components are doing particularly badly or particularly well, to inform any future decision-making. And I have to say, I am continually impressed by how BMO’s Canadian low-volatility ETF, ZLB, has been holding up. It’s been outperforming just about everything else in the portfolio for some time, and its mix of reasonable diversification...
NEW YORK, TORONTO — — A private equity consortium led by Brookfield Asset Management Inc. is preparing a takeover offer for Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. that, if successful, would represent one of the largest leveraged buyouts this country has seen, according to people familiar with the matter.
The article goes on to suggest that many of the assets could be spun out into a REIT. With the REIT index at 50X earnings, this could really unlock a...
How long does it take to open an itrade account? My application is still pending . Applied on 13th Feb 2023 and sent in all the forms for a joint account a few days after. Even though I have been a long time client and hold ultimate Package with BNS, I thought it would be quicker as they have all the info on me and my wife. Anyways, I will wait a week more and call them. I used the winter promo to make use of the perk ( add100k+ and receive $500...
hello all, just wondering if anyone trying to open a scotia itrade account today has been having problem do so by using the promo code C23. For some reason I have been kicked out...i,e the page reset to the try back later and goes back to the initial starting page where I have to start from scratch again. Literally I have be kicked out 5 times in between filling the new account form and all the time the damn page has gone back to starting page....
The longstanding topic Preferreds is a catch-all topic for just about anything related to preferred shares. Prompted by this exchange in another topic,
Prefs are called when the issuer can find less expensive capital than X% at $25 par on an after tax basis. It does not matter what the retail market prices of the units are at the time.
That is what I was saying. They will redeem when it is advantegous to do so and I don't see any...
I'm with TD Canada Trust and want to transfer a large 6 figure amount from my All Inclusive Account to my Ultimate Package Account with Scotiabank. I then want to transfer it to my new iTRADE account. If I use a certified cheque or bank draft they will hold it for up to 3-4 weeks and I can only make a small transfer between my retail Ultimate Package account and my iTRADE trading account.
Wire Transfer is an option. When I set up my Scotia...
Investors get victory in 17-year court battle with mutual fund companies
Clare O’Hara

Published 2023-03-05
After a 17-year court battle, an Ontario judge has ruled in favour of retail investors who suffered losses as two Canadian companies had let big investors make profitable, improper trades in a number of their funds.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Markus Koehnen in February found that both CI...
Discount brokerages to start charging customers for mutual fund trades Do-it-yourself investors will soon have to pay fees for mutual fund trades on certain discount brokerages, as companies prepare to recoup losses from regulatory changes that will no longer allow online trading platforms to sell mutual funds with embedded charges known as trailing commissions.
Starting March 7, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce will begin charging an upfront...
I was internal transferred in the company from India to Canada . I have question Regarding the RSU I hold when I was transferred
explanation
1. I was awarded share of X company listed on Nasdaq on March 2019 at a price of 200$
2. I arrived in Canada on PR in Aug 2022 when the price of X company share was 300$
3. If I sell these shares in March 2023 at a price of 350$
I m attempting to transfer my tfsa at people's trust to Scotia itrade. It's been several months. Scotia itrade says that peoples won't acknowledge their inquiries. Scotia is implying they have sent the transfer form to peoples. Scotia is asking me to supply email for contact person at people's. I see a ton of complaints about Scotia on Google. I told Scotia I'm contacting securities commission to sort it out. Not sure that is the correct...
I'm wondering what people might recommend to an early retiree to mitigate the risk of the whole North American stock market doing more poorly than it has historically, or against S* Hit The Fan scenarios. Sure, rolling 20 year total returns after inflation have never been negative in the US stock market (see image below) but they've been pretty close to zero in the past. And we've had 150 years of prosperity in North America; if you look at...
