Good morning All,
I was trying to buy some Telus share through my IB US account but the order did not go through due to regulatory restrictions. Is it due to non-Canadian ownership restrictions? I am a permanent resident of Canada, but residing in the US. Not sure if they have not voting shares.
This is now showing as a new issue at Scotia iTrade priced at $1, minimum $100 order, with closing Dec 2. Term sheet and prospectus not yet available but links go to this GOC website. All the major FIs are participating.
There doesn't seem to be a specific topic for these types of announcements, so here goes.
Announced today, BMO Asset Management Inc. Launches Five New ETFs, Including Fixed Income Solutions The offering of the new ETFs has closed, and they will begin trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange today:
BMO Short-Term Bond Index ETF (Ticker: ZSB): This ETF offers exposure to 1-5 year Canadian investment grade bonds.
I recently attended a presentation from a portfolio manager in the high yield fixed income sector. The manager was mentioned that he had a high internal yield in his fund.
Can you let me know what internal yield means? When I search online, there seems to be so many variations of yield (i.e. current yield, yield to maturity, distribution yield, etc...)
If someone can lay it out for me that would be awesome. Thanks.
HSBC Investdirect and CIBC Edge offers no fee premium bank accounts (free unlimited e-transfers, no minium balance, credit card fees rebated, etc) with 100k balance or more in their respective brokerage account.
All the other banks seem requiring a lot more than 100k to have that kind of perks, is that right?
Noticed this for the first time in TDDI under Tools: TD Direct Investing Index.
The page it takes you includes various insights into what TDDI self-directed customers did on aggregate – changes in asset allocation, top stocks bought/sold/held, and some analysis of overall customer sentiment.
The monthly index for September rated users of TDDI as feeling very bearish at a -55 score. Calculated how?
From the website of the Attorney General of Washington state:
Court rules gold mining company violated the law more than 3,000 times in Okanogan County
OLYMPIA — A federal judge has ruled that Crown Resources committed thousands of violations of the Clean Water Act in its operation of the Buckhorn Mountain gold mine in Okanogan County. The order comes as part of Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s ongoing environmental citizen suit against...
For those who use TD, and have Two Factor Authentication (2FA) turned on, TD now has an app which will generate a one time passcode which you can use for 2FA to log on. You would use this instead of getting a text or phone call from TD.
This is especially handy for those times when you're out of cell phone range.
It's called TD Authenticate and is available in the Google Play Store ( I assume it's also in the Apple App Store, but haven't...
So this article claims hydrogen cars are the way of the future. I know nothing about this technology, however.
If you have any knowledge in addition to this article on hydrogen fuel, or know of any good stock tips, please post them ITT
First time doing a tax loss harvest and just had a noob question... Is there anything inherently wrong with changing asset allocation while doing a tax loss harvest...?
For example, I have VTI/VXUS in one of my USD accounts. If I want to do a TLH, but instead of replacing with something like ITOT/IXUS or VOO/VEU, is there anything wrong with just switching from VTI/VXUS to only VOO?
(I already have plenty of international allocation in other...
How about a little fantasy play to generate some ideas? Seems like everyone's crystal ball is pointing to an impending recession and major sell off in 2022/3. So let's indulge and play along. I'm curious about your top 5 stocks picks. Please name the stock and what price range you'd make a sizable purchase.
Rules:
1. No need to mention that you can't time the market. We all know that, but personally, I think when great stocks go on sale, it's...
If the stock of an American company trades in both USD and CAD on the NYSE and TSX, respectively, then for the CAD version of the stock, which of the following is true:
(1) Foreign Withholding Tax is baked into the performance of the stock.
(2) Foreign Withholding Tax is deducted by the brokerage whenever dividend payments are made.
(3) There is no Foreign Withholding Tax because even though the company is based in the United States, the...
I watched the special on TV about Warren Buffet last night, generally found it to be enjoyable - except maybe there were too many talking heads scenes with his family and friends and fans all praising him to the skies. I have no doubt that Mr. Buffet is a modest man who lets his actions speak for him, and would be embarassed by all the praise.
What I found useful about the show was the explaination of the structure of Berkshire Hathaway, and...
I am looking at my portfolio to see if anything needs changing, and the only thing that I am not sure about is using ZDB for fixed income.
Some background:
I don't remember which portfolio guide I was following, but either Justin or Dan had ZDB as their fixed income investment vehicle in taxable accounts, which is what I did. Now, they are no longer recommending ZDB, but I am not sure if that's because they are just trying to simplify...
I owned US stocks in both RESP and RRSP accounts.
There are 15% tax withheld for US stocks dividend in my RESP account.
There is no tax is withheld for US stocks hold in RRSP account.
Last year I bought ET, ENERGY TRANSFER LP stocks for my RRSP account.
Only recently, I noticed 37% of the dividend were withheld.
When I asked the brokerage, they responded:
ET is an U.S. Partnerships.
All U.S. Partnerships, effective January 1, 2018,...
Earlier this month (September) I bought CSAV shares using WealthSimple Trade.
The ex dividend date was September 23.
I bought my shares well before the ex dividend date.
CI Global Asset Management's website does not list the dividend pay date. It does list the ex dividend date, but for some reason on their website, they call this the Payable Date :
Other websites have CSAV's dividend pay date as September 29. All of these other websites...
Hello Everyone, I haven't posted on here in a while and I was wondering if I could get some opinions on a sector and a specific stock in that sector. The sector I am talking about is casino & gaming, which surprisingly is very small and less than 10 stocks exists here on the Canadian markets (TSX, Venture, CSE). Recently two gaming companies were taken over and one was profitable, the other one was not. So there seems to be a demand for stocks...
These are both Vanguard ETFs which track the S&P 500 and trade in Canadian dollars.
VFV is unhedged whereas VSP is hedged to the Canadian dollar.
They both have the same MER at 0.09%
Which is better to buy and hold for (1) short-term, (2) medium-term, and (3) long-term?
Of course, I mean relative to the present. So the answer for each scenario might be different a year from now or may have been different a year ago (at least for short and...
Hello all,
First time poster here. I've just returned to Canada after many years in Asia. Back in 2015 I opened up an account with Saxo Bank, and have been buying both Canadian and (USD-denominated) Irish-domiciled ETFs since then.
Unfortunately, I am not an accredited investor in Canada -- while my portfolio has done well, it hasn't done well enough for me to meet the $1mm in cash and assets threshold for individual investors. Saxo,...
I'm 36 years old (in a few weeks) and I have about 25 to 30 years until retirement (although I don't know for sure). I currently do not have any money in the stock market.
I currently have the following in assets (roughly speaking):
RRSP: $79,600 in cash and $25,400 in GICs.
TFSA: $86,500 in cash.
Non-registered Funds: $9,200
House: A townhouse that I purchased in 2017 on which I have a $480,000 mortgage.
I have about 8 years to retirement and I know that at this age 60% stock and 40% bond is aggressive but that is what it is. All my RRSP is vbal. Thinking of selling it and buy 50% VEQT and build a GIC ladder for fixed income with the tensing 50% and gradually increase the FI part.
Your thoughts please.
Progressive Waste (BIN) announced an all-stock reverse merger with Texas-based Waste Connections (NYSE: WCN). Waste Connections has been one of the best performing waste management companies, which has been reflected in it's high trading multiples.Hopefully the merger will be positive for BIN. I was surprised that the merged company will remain domiciled in Canada, despite the fact that WCN is double the market cap of BIN. Hopefully the...
20+ years of saving and investing all in TFSA/RRSP/DCPension means I've never had to deal with the ins and out of tracking gains, dividends, distributions, fees, etc. for the sake of tax reporting. Well all that is about to change, so I'd love to hear from the experts about how to set myself up for success. I'll be opening the account with RBC DI and using it for a combination of buy-and-hold ETFs as well as some more active equity trading...
Moved to US in '89. Helping to manage family's sizable estate since I'm the most well versed of my family in this department. Been a BH for 25 years and have things squared for my family in the US but now am trying to help manage my Canadian family's Estate. Everyone but me is in Toronto so everything about the estate is Canada based. Have already began guiding investing decisions toward Vanguard Canada (VBAL/VFV) but now am turning my attention...
I've recently started investing in stocks and have built a solid base of foundational analysis. In addition to that, I wanted to leverage aspects of technical analysis to help me refine my decision making.
I came across three criteria that I wanted to discuss with the community. They are as follows;
13 & 40 Week Moving Averages and Crossover Points
14 Week Relative Strength Index
40-week Two Standard Deviation Bollinger Bands...
Even with the decline in the Tech stocks I note that companies that specialize in security like Crowdstrike and Palo Alto have been doing well. Given the need for strong security systems and protection it seems that companies and governments need to invest heavily in this area. The two stocks I mentioned are on my potential buy list. I know we have some posters with a strong background in computer software and other areas of tech and would...
A friend mentioned the hot potato theory to me, as an experiment on his RRSP account. It seems like a hybrid of passive & active investing. This is what the portfolio looks like:
25% TD Canadian Bond Index - e {TDB909} -> MER 0.50%
25% TD Canadian Index - e {TDB900} -> MER 0.33%
25% TD US Index - e {TDB902} -> MER 0.35%
25% TD International Index - e {TDB911} -> MER 0.51%
Right off the bat, I noticed that the MER is a bit high. However, with...
I currently own vanguard s&p500 index ETF and ishares s&p tsx 60 index ETF. I'm looking for ETF that don't throw out much dividends/interest yet contain conservative stock. I want exposure to Canada,USA, and Europe. Thanks.
Is there a site that tracks canadian PROVINCIAL bond yields over time? i.e. what has the price/yield been on Ontario bonds maturing in 2031 over the last year. Current price is easy to find on TD or even provincial bond site, but I never see it tracked over time. Admittedly there are a lot of issues based on maturity date x province etc. Thx
I am looking to open a brokerage account to invest in US securities. There's USD at my bank so looking to transfer USD instead of having it exchanged at the brokerage.
A friend recommends Interactive brokers as it offers external bank setup online (for USD). This is what I'm looking for but don't quite like this brokerage as I'm not a professional. Is there any other brokerages that has this function? I briefly looked at TD, HSBC, National Bank...
Due to a personal situation that I won't get into, most of my investments are held in a non-registered account holding VWRD (IB), while my TFSA acccount has remained unused with RBC DI (about 40k unused contribution room). My circumstances have now changed and I'm wanting to contribute to the TFSA.
Question 1
Should I partially sell VWRD position from non-registered account to fill up TFSA asap, incurring capital gain taxes? This may be...
Hi all,
Young investor here (33), and still in accumulation mode of course. This is the first decent drop I’ve been a part of where I had what I consider a lot of money in the market (150k, not a ton to some, but not bad). I did have roughly 90k in 2020 drop, which wasn’t bad.
I find the psychology of this whole thing funny, as I had no trouble contributing months ago at all time highs, and now that stocks are on sale I’m squeamish. I do...
I invest at RBC Direct and have a fair sized cash position in US dollars. I would like to park it for a year in a FI position. On my Canadian side I have been putting cash in I year GICs and I don't see such an option on the US side. Vanguard and iShares have some short term inflation protection ETFs which track the US TIPs. Other options are ETFs that track US treasury notes, US government ST bonds and ST corporate bonds. May-be there are other...
Background: I'm a Canadian citizen who now lives in the US (Colorado). I still have a Canadian RSP with TD Direct. (The RSP contributions all pre-date my move to the US). Until now I haven't had any problems placing trades in that account, other than the inconvenience of having to get assistance from a live representative instead of being able to do so on-line.
Recently I tried to place a trade for a Canadian ETF (symbol XRB). To my surprise...
Doing a tax loss harvest for the first time and was hoping someone can help walk me through a scenario using XEQT and VEQT. The end goal is being able to get back into XEQT after 30+ days (I prefer XEQT and would love to be able to stay in it long term after the tax loss harvest is complete.)
Fake Example Scenarios:
Scenario 1: Price of XEQT and VEQT both go UP 5% After 30 Days
1. On July 15th, SELL 1000 shares of XEQT at $22.85 . Amount in...
Anyone has experience with both and can share their experience? I buy in CAD and USD and have idle cash sitting in the account. Not a frequent trader. So looking for something that offers options to park the idle cash or ease of xfer in and out of the brokerage accounts. Have been hearing a lot of good things about Questrade but seems like Qtrade has updated their platform?
This is my first post. I am really happy to join this community and I wonder if you could help me.
I am stuck with a Russian bond in my portfolio with ISIN US78307AAE38 and confused what it is going to happen. In a few days we supposed to get the coupon payment and I am no sure what the current situation is. I have contacted my broker multiple times and I didn't get any answer. I was reading somewhere that the Russian government...
I have $32k in my RRSP. Id like to invest in something safe in the short term while I figure out what I want to invest in long term or do with my RRSP.
Ive considered bonds, but I am worried about interest rate fluctuations causing the prices to drop.
I then found: Evolve HISA . Net return is 2.15%. This has a better rate then purpose HISA ETF .
However, Evolve HISA is located on Neo Exchange . Ive never heard of this before.
Thinking of replacing my VBG (Vanguard global ex-US bonds) and VBU (Vanguard US bonds) positions with CGBI, a new global ex-Canada bond ETF from CIBC. Blended MER for VBG/VBU (or the one-stop VGAB) is about 0.30%. For CGBI, 0.19%. Should save me about $300 and simplify my rebalancing ever so slightly.
Question: Would you feel comfortable investing in a brand new ETF like that with tiny volume? Is it worth waiting a quarter or two, or are the...
It looks like the FundLibrary.com site has gone down the toilet. Seems they now want people to create an account, and gone are the old price lookup tools. If this is incorrect or if someone knows of an alternative to the old functionality, please share.
Hello all, I currently own shares in both CNR and CP as I could not decide which one to hold.
If you were only going to hold one of these going forward which one would you recommend?
CNR seems like a sure bet and they are making lots of investments for the future, CP also looks promising but they seem to have a lot of debt.
I'm a US citizen and a Canadian permanent resident and I'd like to add some gold to my portfolio using Canadian dollars. If I were to invest in MNT, an exchange traded receipt from the Canadian Gold Reserves, would this require a PFIC filing? I really want to avoid this, but I'm not sure how to be sure. To me, it isn't providing a passive income, but I'm not certain.
And if there's a better way to invest in gold using CAD while avoiding the...
Hi. I'd welcome any guidance in regards experience of access by non-residents to existing Canadian self-directed brokerage accounts? For example - Scotia iTrade, RBC DI, Questrade, other.
Do Canadian brokerage firms freeze, or otherwise restrict trading, in accounts if a customer becomes noon-resident?
Does it matter if the account is registered or non-registered?
Are there specific Canadian brokerage firms that are more amenable to clients that...
