Trump administration sends Congress official letter triggering NAFTA renegotiation: U.S. reports - Politics - CBC News
A copy of the letter obtained by U.S. media cites the need to update chapters that do not reflect modern standards, and mentions digital trade as being only in its infancy when NAFTA was negotiated in the early nineties.
It mentions the need for new provisions to address intellectual property rights, regulatory practices,...
I have been puzzled by the protests going on at Greece. The country almost went bankrupt, and cutting spending and increasing tax seems to be the most logical solution. During an economic downturn, many people lose their job. A salary reduction is far better than losing the job. Can someone enlighten me why these people are protesting?
I'm new to this forum and see there is a lot of good information. I am wondering where most of you get financial information on stocks to base a decision. I use various sites such as Globeandmail, Yahoo, BNN, Seeking Alpha and TDDI (which is great but slow to load where I am and still doesn't have everything I want to see). The main problem is I have difficulty finding two numbers I that want to see; dividend history and payout ratio to...
So this is how this entire thing works: they gather your data, they build their products based on your information, they charge their customers with all the profiles you help them build (even if unintentionally, but you have no choice), and when there is a data leak (when, not if), it's you who's left with your pants down.
Nice data we have on you, it'd be a pity if something happened to it.
I saw a recent news about a professional basketball player trying to turn part of his sports contract, into an investment vehicle for the public. I believe it is essentially a loan to the athlete. The difference is that, in addition to getting your principle and interest payments back after the term, you may get a bonus at the end, if the athlete signs a bigger contract during his prime year. The basketball league eventually disallows this...
Most FWF'ers will already be familiar with many of the conclusions of Morningstar's recent report, Canada rates poorly in Morningstar survey of mutual fund costs | Investment Executive Canada’s fund industry has crawled out of the basement in Morningstar Inc.’s global rankings of fund investor costs, but remains “below average” due to the impact of high ongoing fees.
The Chicago-based research firm published a report Tuesday that grades the...
The basic principles of investment are being upended, perhaps irreversibly, as the world enters an era of ultra-low and even negative interest rates.
The big picture: The low-to-negative interest rate environment poses a major problem for people looking to save for retirement. The traditional 60/40 portfolio (60% stocks and 40% bonds) that fund managers have used to craft retirement accounts for decades doesn't work in the long-term if bonds...
Unfortunately behind the G&M paywall, How one of the most influential investors of our era manages his portfolio - The Globe and Mail
William Bernstein is a retired neurologist who educated himself about investing in the early 1990s. As anyone with scientific training would do, he surveyed the scholarly literature, collected data and built models. Thinking his findings would be of benefit to others, he wrote a book called The Intelligent...
I have an unregistered account handled by a FA . Although I do not like Mutual Funds, I am advised, due to my age (90) I must use them as part of my Fixed Income portion of my portfolio. I do not understand how they are taxed. It seems there are Capital losses offset by Interest Income. Am I correct? :?
They do not have any directors' or officers' insurance, Hollinger chairman Gordon Walker said in an affidavit, so this would provide us with a more realistic measure of protection against the costs of potential and threatened litigation.
Those threats came in a series of e-mails to the independent directors, who took over management of Hollinger when Lord Black stepped down as chairman and chief executive officer late last year.

Although the preceding discussion has focused on mutual funds, it should not be assumed that the funds are the worst of the whole lot of investment managers. In fact, the mutual funds have had a somewhat better performance record than many other professional investors. The records of life insurance companies, property and casualty insurance companies, pension funds, foundations, state...
An interesting article about what the exclusion of EU citizens may mean for the UK food supply and costs.
Hint: UK workers just do not want the jobs that the EU workers are supposedly taking from them.
As published recently in National Post, Canada's income tax rates have become uncompetitive
A study from the Fraser Institute:
- suggests the current tax rates discourage individuals from engaging in productive economic activity, ultimately hindering economic growth and prosperity
- calls on both the federal and provincial governments to consider “reversing the trend toward higher marginal tax rates on upper-income earners” and begin...
Well, it's pretty clear that a US-contrived failure of NAFTA is now in the cards, combined with withdrawal by Trump, endless court battles. We can try to rework TPP and possibly engage China and India. A bilateral US treaty with this administration seems unlikely. Protectionist forces are now winning; all we need is the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act - Wikipedia . But this country simply can not produce all it needs and is dependent on trade...
Ottawa sees Chinese-owned Huawei as major security threat, senior officials say
Despite Five Eyes cybersecurity concerns, all major Canadian telecom carriers are now heavily promoting Huawei’s latest smartphone, and, as The Globe reported in May, the firm has established a vast network of relationships with leading research-heavy universities in Canada to create a steady pipeline of intellectual property that the company is using to underpin...
FWF'ers are probably well aware of ghariton's signature The plural of anecdote is NOT data.
Well Barry Ritholtz takes a look at it in The Plural of Anecdote IS Data - The Big Picture In this context, let’s consider the aphorism, “ the plural of anecdote is not data. ” This is the idea that a single example should never be used to extrapolate a broader rule about, well, anything. This applies to stocks, the economy, politics, Brexit — just...
I've Got to Admit It's Getting Better Getting Better All the Time
Added quote:
It’s time to get defensive as long as your portfolio carries enough yield to outlast the wave of global savings and price-insensitive central bankers who have dominated the cycle to this point.
China is a lucrative market for Canada. Hopefully we will continue to see progress on the trade front
BLOOMBERG: Trudeau Pays a Price as U.S. Turns Screws on Huawei
China was once a grand prize for Justin Trudeau, who sought to follow in his father’s footsteps by cementing stronger ties with the Asian powerhouse.

There were early stumbles. A personal visit by Trudeau in late 2017 aimed at spurring free trade talks fell flat over...
Low interest rates present a daunting challenge for bond investors. All the developed countries of the world are burdened with excessive amounts of debt. Like the United States, governments around the world are having an extraordinarily difficult time reining in entitlement programs in the face of aging populations. The easier path for the U.S. and other governments is to keep interest rates artificially low as the real burden of the debt is...
I'm posting this in the Financial News, Policy and Economics forum because it's about monetizing customer data and policy.
I will give some credit to Bell for their disclosure and explaining what they are doing, Bell wants permission to gather and track customer data | CBC News Bell Canada began asking its customers in December for permission to track everything they do with their home and mobile phones, internet, television, apps or any other...
What force of nature prompted South Korea suddenly to scrap plans to sell dollars? On Tuesday, the dollar was plunging as markets digested the South Korean central bank's announcement that it would diversify foreign-exchange reserves into other currencies.
By Wednesday, the bank said that it had no such plan, leaving traders scratching their heads.
Dumping dollars would be a logical move for the world's...
The highest-rated ETFs that track S&P, Dow Jones, and CRSP indexes earn Gold ratings, except for the mega-cap offerings from S&P and CRSP, which earn Bronze and Silver ratings, respectively (Dow Jones does not offer a separate mega-cap index). Notably, the funds that track the Russell family of indexes don't earn marks as high as their peers.
Vanguard Russell 2000 ETF (VTWO) and iShares Russell 2000...
I believe we have just started the big sucker rally of 2009 although a bit late in coming. We should get a nice rally here that you can sell into before we get destroyed in the next leg down.
Do you have an opinion on the subject? Please share.
I've been curious about bitcoint for a while, but I don't know enough about it to form an opinion.
Just recently I discovered that computer video cards went up in price over the last 6 months or so.

Since MoneySense and Ratehub are often mentioned by FWF'ers I think it only makes sense to post this.
Announcing the acquisition of MoneySense by Ratehub Inc. - MoneySense We’re excited to share Ratehub Inc. has acquired MoneySense from Rogers Media. In the TDDI thread it was suggested that TDDI may have more problems than any other broker. Without some sort of estimate of which brokerage everyone uses, and even with it, it is hard to tell if this is true or not.
I have listed 10 Online Discount Brokerages* (max limit) please select the one or ones you use, you can provide comments good, bad or exceptional if you want. If yours is not on the list you could post a comment.
Most of us enjoy worrying about impending financial crises. But could things get worse than they are today? This thread is intended to highlight some of the negatives coming up. First on the list:
Brexit
British attorneys say the country’s possible departure from the European Union would bring economic chaos -- even as they benefit from increased billing hours from briefing clients about the move.
New book by Shannon Lee Simmons, founder of The New School of Finance. A new take on how budgeting for most people does not work. This a fresh approach that I believe can help a lot of people starting out on their financial journey. For seasoned FWF members nothing new here but think of the help it might be to the children and grandchildren :)

You guys disappoint me ;)
I have to learn on some other site (I don't watch/read/listen to ANY news) that the market went down like 5% yesterday and there's no mention of it here on FWF ..?
While predictions tend to go over like a lead balloon here I thought this was about as straightforward a sentence as you get from a broker report.
'Eventually the yield curve will invert, analysts will shift from upward to downward revisions, and a bear market will begin. We continue to believe that the earliest a bear market could begin is 2020. In the meantime, we remain bullish expecting continued growth in earnings and stock prices.'...
ok i read a thread about feb 2018 and the crash. well maybe an adjustment as mentioned further down the thread. but tell me why is it now that i see my account take 2 steps forward then 3 steps back then 1 step fw and 2 steps bw then 4 steps fw and 1 step bw. i started the year 380k and now i'm at 376k and i'm in a conservative plan. i'm 67 and at this point can't afford to have it going backwards after that big hit in 2008.

I thought that this should have a different thread.
Canada is not alone in having supply management for certain agricultural products. For example, the United States has a very similar system for sugar .
Sugar is produced extensively in the United States for a simple reason. The US sugar program is a Stalinist-style supply control initiative that limits imports through quotas and domestic production through what are called marketing...
