Canadian Universities seem to be having some financial difficulties, at least partially because of fewer international students who pay more.
With Faculty being the largest cost item, and many of them having tenure, there is little room to manoeuvre on the cost side.
There are fewer international students, but there seems to be enough domestic students to make up for that. (My oldest grandchild just got accepted into Waterloo, and despite of...
Britain is planning for all vehicles to be electric by 2040. I believe that France has a similar target and India plans to only allow electric vehicle sales by 2030. It appears that Sweden is also moving in this direction - so there appears to be a bit of a trend here. It is not totally out of the realm of possibility that Canada will jump on board one day.
I'm trying to keep an open mind on the topic - while I don't get my underwear in a knot...
Why are Canadians' cellphone bills higher than other countries? Despite government promises to lower the cost of mobile wireless plans and efforts to promote more competition in the market, many Canadians feel they're paying too much with few options for getting better rates. And with Rogers Communications set to close the deal on its acquisition of Shaw Communications (pending an appeal) by the end of the month, the market only seems to be...
My medical centre. I've posted this before about on again / off again carousel having access to a family physician.
Was supposed to have my annual check-up this Monday (twice cancelled since November). Checked my client portal to notice that it was declined with no exclamation. Phoned in three times before getting through - only able to leave a message last Friday. Tried again the last two days before getting through to a live person. No...
I am considering a trip out west in late July or early August.
The tentative plan is to spend 7 to 10 days.
1. Fly to Calgary.
2. Rent a car for the duration of the trip.
3. Spend a few nights at a B&B within short driving distance to various trailheads.
4. Do a few day hikes from this B&B base camp .
5. Repeat points 3 and 4 from a different B&B base camp .
6. Drive back to Calgary.
7. Fly back home.
I am wondering where to go for about a week in the end of April for a vacation.
Some hiking would be great. That's for 2 adults travelling from ON.
Presently debating between Calgary/Banff, may be catch some end of season skiing and hiking on mostly snow covered trails.
vs
BC - fly to Vancouver (I am not really interested in the city) - where to go what to do? Vancouver island?
I am not a fun of crowded places.
I was thinking about...
For those with a software background, RIP: Software design pioneer Niklaus Wirth • The Register Swiss computer scientist Professor Niklaus Wirth died on New Year's Day, roughly six weeks before what would have been his 90th birthday.
Wirth is justly celebrated as the creator of the Pascal programming language, but that was only one step in a series of important languages and research projects. Both asteroid 21655 and a law of computer design...
It is 2024. I'm getting older, worn out and still have so many unanswered questions!!!!
I haven’t found out who let the dogs out, where’s the beef, or how to get to Sesame Street.
Don't know why Dora doesn’t just use Google Maps, why all the flavors of fruit loops taste exactly the same, or how many licks does it take to get to the centre of a tootsie pop!!!
Why eggs are packaged in a flimsy carton but batteries are secured in plastic that’s...
I have a landline at home. It has voicemail and caller ID. Recently, say the last 2 months I have been receiving a call around 7.30 a.m. I do not get many calls anyway and if I do not recognise the caller, I do not answer. This caller never leaves a message. I figure if they leave a message I can decide to call back, otherwise I have no interest in asking why they called me.
However, what is curious is that the number calling is a 9 digit...
As I get older I'd love to fly (esp long haul) more comfortably. Economy doesn't cut it anymore, I particularly dislike night flights.
Economy flights remind me more and more of a bus travel in a third world country...
I look into business class and specifically 'lie-flat seats/beds' in business class, looks like they can be found and booked using Google Flights and some other search engines.
This show from the NPR station in Washington, DC interviewed a computer security consultant who has written a whole book about passwords. Some tips:
If a website will allow it, create a password of at least 30 characters. Here are two ways to make it easy to remember and type:
1. Use lyrics from a song or a statement. For example:

You could even try putting in spaces and see if the system accepts it. He said...
My uncle got me interested in genealogy in the 1980s. He sent me a boxful of birth, death and marriage notices that he had collected over the years by walking and bussing to the various registrars' offices around Scotland and England to view original documents.. Since I knew about computers, I offered to collate them all into a family history that could be handed down in a readable format to our children and grandchildren. He died last month and...
My last computer purchase was a laptop. I don't need a laptop since I only move the computer to 2 locations. I was considering going with a mini computer since I already have large screens at the 2 locations. My laptop is a XP17 9700 from Dell. It has adequate horsepower for what I do.
Anyone have experience with a mini or suggestions which to start the search?

I have an elderly Kobo ereader. I transfer books that I have bought from Kobo by wifi. Books that I borrow from my library are downloaded and then transferred to ADE. I then connect my ereader by cable to my laptop/desktop and transfer the book. A few days ago I borrowed a book from the library and went through this process. However, when I tried to drag the book from ADE to the ereader I got this message. CE_COPY_NOT_ALLOWED-No permission to...
The flat at which I am staying in Penang has an induction counter top stove. I bought a very small sauce pot clearly marked for induction use. However when I try to use it, the burner does not respond. It does for larger pans and pots. Is this normal?
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows you to have human-like conversations and much more with a chatbot. The language model can answer questions, assist you with tasks such as composing emails, essays and code. Usage is currently open to public free of charge because ChatGPT is in its research and feedback-collection phase.
The model has many functions in addition to answering simple...
We were recently in Lisbon. Lovely trip. One odd little fun thing is at the money museum. They have a 12.6 kilo gold bar that you can touch and lift and rattle a little bit. A cheap thrill :) especially considering the museum is itself free. Cheers
Here's a great article about tip shaming. It deals with the history, psychology, profitability--and the absurdity of the practice. Well worth the read.
Has Gratuity Culture Reached a Tipping Point?
A couple of snippets: One night this summer, her Chevy Cruze got towed at a local ice rink. She and Reed went together to the impound lot: forms, cashier, the tablet. They owed more than nine hundred dollars, including a “convenience fee,” the...
Somewhat inspired in the somewhat interesting but off-topic postings in another topic,
….My home branch was in Waterloo and I could access my account from the CT branch on the main floor of my office at 55 St Clair Ave W.
They used a pair of 360-30s and upgraded to 145 then 155.
And then upgraded to 158s, etc. I meant what they had when they rolled out multi-branch banking to the general population. Did that ever run on a pair of...
I am having difficulty sending e mail on Outlook Express 6.I have Windows 98.
Moderator, I realize this is a Financial Forum so if someone could direct me to a computer fix-it forum that would help.
Anyway back to my problem.
When I try to send or forward an e mail it gets diverted to the OUTBOX and I get a message telling me that an error has occurred and the Error # is 0x800c0131.
If I reboot the computer it will send the messages in the...
I know most won't be usable past 2025 because of 3g sunset but still a few years left. There's no tax on Chinese phones and they are substantially cheaper. Xiamio phones are great choice but I don't want to lose investment savings to Chinese government.
Add in the fact that this is an Olympic year in Japan, one of the most conservative countries in the world when it comes to responding to medical emergencies, and the resulting hype and mania is just added to worldwide. The whole cruise ship fiasco was one of the main bits of this crisis seen in the western media and one can easily see how this catalyst was started. Another issue rarely mentioned is that in this age of people getting the 'news'...

Have to wonder about the odds of a fatal flaw in the Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane after a new Ethopian Airlines plane went down shortly after takeoff, eerily similar to the Lion Air crash. Or is it simply coincidence? Doesn't instill confidence right now and I'm not sure I'd get on one until this sorts itself out.
Been offered this machine for a two month trial. Early days seems not to bad so far. Looked at some bad reviews their concerns are not in line with my thinking, $1800. ( no coverage)
Seems like the wild west out there. Went to a BC med funded sleep clinic for assessment, scored almost 100% on the bad side, Severe sleep Apnea.
I'm thinking I would hope to get 5 years out of a machine not sure about hoses and masks.
I found out today that Fido (Ontario) is no longer offering internet services for new customers. (Existing customers continue to have access to service)
Several of my family members use Fido, however over the next few months our promo rates ($39/mth) end and unless we are offered promo extensions, we expect to see our rates double.
Can anyone recommend a reputable/reliable alternative provider (other than Rogers and Bell) worth considering in...
I recently bought Gross Anatomy on DVD, which I watched again last night. A fine movie, much underrated IMO, with an excellent performance by Christine Lahti.
I'm eager to connect with successful entrepreneurs to enhance my business prospects. I'm open to any industry, as I have some general questions and am looking to surround myself with like-minded individuals who have achieved success.
I attended an EO event recently, but it was quite exclusive, and I couldn't gain access. Are there other places or events in Vancouver where I can meet such individuals? It doesn't have to be a formal...
Snow on the windmill palms. Ironically, we haven't had a frost yet and it's +2C outside. I just turned off the outside water yesterday as freezes were forecast over the next week.

Post your own on this shortest day of the year.
Looking forward to seeing a grand conjunction pic from somewhere less overcast.
Borrowing from What are you listening to now on the Bogleheads forum, I thought it might be interesting to query the FWF community.
I used to partipate in a wine board, and this swas one of their ongoing topics. I liked it as I sometimes got inspiration/ ideas about new or at least unfamiliar music that I could later seek out. Granted, it could be old artists or new artists. So for me, new music could simply be something I was unfamiliar with,...
Can anyone recommend an excellent unsubsidized private care home in the Montreal area?
A close friend of mine is looking for a very good English-speaking care home in Montreal for a parent in their late nineties who currently resides in their own home in another province. Given the parent’s advanced age, the proceeds from the sale of the family home will easily cover the cost for care. The parent is mentally sharp but very frail. Care staff...
This is less a computer problem, and more a user (me) problem. I have two credit cards that do not let me access my accounts when I use a VPN (Tunnel Bear's free version). When we are travelling for a month or so, I need to check one of these cards (Home Trust) so that I pay the balance and don't incur interest charges. I don't use the other card when we are away. All other sites work fine with the VPN. Is there something I am doing wrong (I've...
Do yourself a favour ... try weaning yourself off Microsoft. Get all the files you need off the old machine. Download a copy of Linux Mint (I like this but this has more eye candy) and burn it to a DVD. Use that DVD to install Mint on your old machine, wiping out the Win7 install entirely. Use it for a week. You may never go back to Windows. I never have.
Disclosure, my old desktops get moved to our basement to become file servers running...
I installed Windows 10 Version 22H2 (KB5021233) yesterday, as recommended by Windows Update. The update screwed up my HP laptop computer, and it wouldn't restart. I eventually I was able to restart in safe mode. A troubleshooting program indicated there was a problem with the Microsoft update and it had been automatically uninstalled. The associated message said Windows Update would block any attempt to reinstall this update for 30 days...
I keep a 6 drawer cabinet on my kitchen counter. It came from Ikea years ago. In these drawers I keep rice Cornstarch, tapioca starch sugar and flour. The latter comes from the Supermarket bag which is in another room and closed with a clip. When I open the flour drawer will once in a while show weevils, alive and well. I discard the flour, microwave the drawer on high and replace the flour. The main bag shows no sign of weevils.
Thank goodness we might see some action as Cookie Pledge: EU admits that cookie banners are annoying, suggests remedy - gHacks Tech News Now, the EU is considering altering the regulation to make it less annoying to users. EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders commented on the plans in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag (which, by the way has only accept all or subscribe options for users in its cookie banner): According to...
Sad to see this announcement Jeff Beck: British guitar legend dies aged 78 - BBC News The British musician rose to fame as part of the Yardbirds, where he replaced Eric Clapton, before forming the Jeff Beck group with Rod Stewart.
His tone, presence and, above all, volume redefined guitar music in the 1960s, and influenced movements like heavy metal, jazz-rock and even punk.
I am flying to Malaysia again for the winter. Using Aeroplan points I am going there Business Class. The routing is Montreal Heathrow, then Heathrow to Singapore and then to Penang. The first leg is Air Canada. I have flown Business on many airlines and I must say their food id A1. However, Air Canada sent me my options for dinner on my flight. Chicken Parmesan or Shepherd's Pie. WOW!
I'm starting to copy my site to a new server, which seems to be going well. But my cgi scripts won't make the transition because it's time I use something half way modern instead.
What are people using today for fairly simple web scripts? Is PHP the thing to use? Something else?
While I'm not at all afraid to learn a new language, the updated versions of the Asset Mixer and Periodic Table might be delayed this year because I'm already snowed...
As an ex-Palm Pilot user I couldn't help laughing at Southwest issues new Palm Pilots to all staff in massive IT upgrade project . Some nice digs (my bolding) in the article,
The bold new strategy was unveiled Thursday night via a fax delivered to all Southwest locations.
Staff, however, we nonplussed at the move, with the airline’s union issuing a statement describing their frustration that they were not being issued Blackberrys .
I...
75 years ago today the United States detonated the first atomic bomb on Japan targeting Hiroshima, three days later on Nagasaki.
On August 15 Japan surrendered and on September 2nd with the Japanese Instrument of Surrender formalized the end of hostilities thus ending World War II.
