Yes, you either let it pile up, gift it as you go or spend more I guess. This person could have retired earlier or had an increased lifestyle along the journey.
I once remember a fellow whose goal in life was to die the richest man in the county! Not sure how that worked out, but I do recall he was hell on his family as all were involved in the family business.

Rattling around my head is the saying something like 'the richest man is the one with the fewest needs'. Glad that fellow wasn't my dad :)

Re: Best Sim Card for Data in USA

Just back from SE USA. used a Jethro card that included real phone calling(I have an older parent to keep an ear on). Did the online registration prior to leaving which got me the US phone number and it worked perfectly after turning it on there.

A number of the e-sim and data only provider says you can make phone calls but it seemed really only a call to something like a whatsapp kind of thing not a call to a 90 year old guy with a landline so it was good. The keepgo looks good for just data especially the dual country us and canada data.

Thanks of everyones ongoing help on this stuff.

I like a lot of what I read and hear from him. His sch-tick is breezy, glib, over the top descriptions, fast paced and thinly spread. So more interesting than a dry academic that not many would listen to. Demographics drives a lot of things. 'Way' back in 1990's when our David Foot Foote? had a best seller. So long ago we could go back and see how close it rang. Pig in the Python I think. More interesting than stock analysts anyway.

Maybe if we changed the name from massage to pain reduction therapy :) PRT you heard it hear first. Been there and done that while I was heeling. My dad can't reach his toes and it's a job I really like outsourcing even if the price seems not so good.

As far as rate- inflation= whatcha got minus tax = seems not as good as the 90's but then again I now own some of the 'house' (ry et all)so I like making it at that end.

Cheers all.

Re: Clippings 2023

As far as population goes I'd read the overstated population figures were due to overstating/corruption at local level. You got personal level funding and location institutions like daycare school etc got national dough. Nobody from many miles away came around to count actual heads. Or if they did maybe all was known and overlooked with nice meal and gift....yada yada not my country but I can see how it could roll.

There's how it works on paper then how it work in the wild :) Were Canadian we read about it rather than think it's occasionally like this here too now and then.

While it's called Cdn Banks, I do wonder what would the American's do. Here's a neat link of a graphic form of the sp500.

https://advisor.visualcapitalist.com/sp ... ndustries/

We think 25% for banks is normal while they have tech at the same %. There financials are 10 or so. So a Cdn might htink your low at say 18% but might you not be over compared to an index in an umm bigger or adult(?) market.

Always something to chew on...

Quotes below from the above linked globe story. Changes will take time, it's been the weak sister for some time for sure.

“We have not delivered the level of total shareholder return that our shareholders should expect of us,” Mr. Thomson said during a conference call with analysts.

While its international banking arm – focused on Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru – posted a rise in net income to $654-million from $545-million, Mr. Thomson said on the call that the division’s overall “returns are not commensurate with our expectations in certain countries.”

Lol, not if his fortune went up in smoke in the weed bubble the prior year :)

Still an interesting story he was. Land, brown nosing the Royalty and Pope, various integrations, getting some exclusive deals. We think we invent so much but dig back and it's been there done that isn't it.

I guess it's time to mention Jacob the Rich again. His take is very close to Brian's after making a few subtle shifts for 550 years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakob_Fugger

“Divide your fortune into four equal parts: stocks, real estate, bonds and gold coins.”

“Be prepared to lose on one of them most of the time… Whenever performance differences cause a major imbalance, re-balance your fortunes back to the four equal parts.”

home tax credit

Mrs. Profit has a question for you all....

If you are living in a seniors assisted retirement residence apartment can you claim the Ontario senior care at home tax credit?
( Assuming you qualify for a disability tax credit and are claiming attendant care expenses as a medical expense.)
My tax software is claiming it, but I can't see any definition of 'home' on the help page or any Fed or Ont. government websites.

Much appreciated, as I run for the hills at the whiff of anything tax...thanks Mr PnP.

Re: Travel - financial management

Thanks, sorry I read these in bits over a week and forget and miss. I'm hoping to get more and more frequent trips. So much of this info goes out of date and changes quick. In the past we couldn't care less about phones now by dad is on a list for LTC and it seems they call you once and you get 24 hours to react. The games changing a bit.

I wonder if it's an ok time here to ask a related thought...the fongo service for your phone to help enable some of these features. I've been a bit of a Luddite ignoring phones when away and using cash for little stuff. If it's better to move this to a phone thread feels free but I thought it might continue the thought.....cheers

Just under two month later were almost set for it to be completed. I think I'd almost be better adding to the TD broker screw up thread instead. They had a series of missteps, screw ups, internal fax files piles being ignored, and blah blah. It got bumped up to some sort of complex resolution team and they took the move from the gutter into happening correctly. To simplify your life you must get complex it seems....

Interesting thanks. A company I've heard of, knew it took some hits but wasn't my home town so didn't know much. I hadn't thought about how much custom positioning of thingamajig and doodads affected there work and thus volume of supply and thus pecking order on the supply chain. Glad it's wasn't my problem.

https://financialpost.com/news/economy/mark-carney-recession-coming-interest-rates-wont-come-down Canadians should not be under any illusions about the state of the economy, said Carney. “One of the things you need in a crisis: you need to be straight with people about the scale of the issue,” he said. The economy still has momentum, but it’s misleading, he added. Though the numbers might not clearly indicate a recession, that is indeed where the economy is heading, he said. Still, Carney said he doesn’t think central bankers will cut rates as quickly as the might have in the past. That’s because inflation is “still too high,” he said, and “monetary policy needs to be tight.” If rates are cut, inflation could flare again, and central banker...

Yes to the Barry Broadfoot book. He ended up with two books there as the discussions of the depression and the war years were so strongly intertwined, one ran into the other. My dad was the youngest of the boy so he seemed to luck into a lighter load than the others. I'm not sure my grandparents had it any easier int eh 20's as that was the decade they were getting started. Farming always seems to be in transition. Horses were starting to decline in that era. I recently read Vaclav Smil's 'how the world really works'. It was mentioned here on the forum. He puts some actual numbers on some era's of production 1800, 1900 and recent. You don't get to pick your era but I'll take what I got thank you ....

My people were on the farm and had no worries about paying the electricity bill as they didn't have it. It was installed in the mid 50's so yes times change. As far as calling the broker to buy stock, stock had four hoofs and I'm not sure when they did get a party line. The youngest might have a different idea of what a party line is too :) Cheers
