Vanguard FTSE Canada All Cap Index ETF seeks to track, to the extent reasonably possible and before fees and expenses, the performance of a broad Canadian equity index that measures the investment return of large-, mid- and small-capitalization, publicly traded securities in the Canadian market. Currently, this Vanguard ETF seeks to track the FTSE Canada All Cap Index (or any successor thereto). It invests primarily in large-, mid- and small-capitalization Canadian stocks.

I mean... I felt a slight amount of sympathy that this person was new to Canada, but... who in their right mind thinks that the tax authority of a country is going to take payment in iTunes gift cards through Snapchat!?!?!

Stupid, stupid, stupid... can't get dumber than this.
I dunno, how about calling people stupid who haven't had a chance to learn. I realize we're all better than those other people, but I draw the line at calling them names because I've lived a life of privilege.

BTW, google is almost always quicker than FWF for answers, but the members here are 'usually' more friendly. They may even expand on simple answers with new ideas.

For instance, VCN is an all cap index which includes small cap. Instead of buying 2 funds, you can just buy one!

The Act does not exempt gifts of land from land transfer tax. However, if on a conveyance there is no consideration passing in any form whatsoever (either directly or indirectly) between the parties, then no tax is payable. Since the rate of tax is applied to the "nil" value of the consideration, the resulting computed tax payable is also "nil". The exception to this is where the Act deems the consideration passing to be the fair market value of the land such as transfers from a corporation to any of its shareholders or leases over 50 years.
Not really sure, but that's my first search result.

Since the radii of a specific circle of rubber changes, it has to be pretty stretchy. I don't see how highway speeds are possible. There are some forklifts (and toys) that do this already with really weird roller wheels.

I've always though spheical wheels would be better.

If you're getting ads on this site you have malware. Some things get added to your browser that scan for words and show popup ads when they see that word.

Re: Things to worry about

I really don't understand the derivatives market, or how it is related to sovereign debt, but it sounds ominous. Is this another financial "black box" or is someone able to explain what $500 trillion in derivatives actually represents? First of all, I seriously doubt the $100 trillion sovereign debt number. A derivative is usually an option, future or swap. The $500 trillion number is called notional value. I assume you understand options so assume you have a government bond and you'd like to buy downside insurance in the form of a put option. You pay a tiny percentage for the option but it's recorded in notional value as that of the bond. There are very many valid uses that are mainly intended to reduce or transfer risk. You've ...

That's just a saying, or reminder to be vigilant. In many instances anecdotes do add up to data, and we do have more than anecdotes, it's just not perfect. Also, this is a business driven by anecdotes. Nobody parses the median income data, current rates, household formation and housing starts data to come up with an asking price, they just ask what the neighbours sold for.

It's not denial if there's no data.
It's not NO data, just incomplete data. There's nothing wrong with making conclusions based on incomplete information. Most conclusions 'probably' are. As long as you say 'probably', what's the big deal.

FWIW, my conclusions are foreign money, specifically from China, is a major contributor to the increases. Of course all other factors play a role as well.

I don't really think there's much to do with this conclusion except maybe worry about banks in a RE crash. However all other factors are at play in that scenario as well.

Re: Placing orders from the road

Which would be a more secure connection to my broker over the hotel WiFi: a W10 browser web page or a smartphone app? The weaknesses are different so it depends on the user. Wifi is most susceptible to MITM, but it's possible, like patriot says, for the cable guy to intercept wired traffic. I think that would be unusual, but it's a possibility. You have to ignore a lot of things for MITM to succeed between you and a secure brokerage, but it could easily deliver nonsense from other sites. All modern browsers are very secure, it's the plugins that are the problem. In the case of Dell, it was by adding their own security certificate. For smartphones, it's the privileges you give to an app, and a new problem, linked privileges, where apps talk...

Re: Placing orders from the road

It's almost impossible for your bank connection to be hacked just because you're in a hotel. I say 'almost' because an unaware user could easily be hacked.

If you use a modern browser, and don't ignore certificate warnings, and check for https: (the s is important), and don't install a dodgy certificate like Dell did, you'll be safe.

Re: capital gains on US currency

Is there a definition of "disposition". Yes but it's around a page long. http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/I-3.3/page-271.html#h-157 disposition of any property, except as expressly otherwise provided, includes (a) any transaction or event entitling a taxpayer to proceeds of disposition of the property, I was looking at cases explicitly for the situation where foreign currency is spent for goods on a casual basis. There's nothing, but a few things I remember reading (not word for word). Any foreign currency disposition must have a gain or loss Canada doesn't have foreign exchange laws spelled out as clearly as other countries and must rely on judges to to create sensible case law IMO you technically have a disposition when ...

If you're investing for the long term, these differences will all eventually disappear. Note that with the recent reduction in XIC's mer it may attract more money that will cause the same problems as with VCN. Also, fresh money at higher prices reduces the capital gains problem.

Human sacrifice helped ancient societies entrench class divide, study suggests - Technology & Science - CBC News
Watts and his colleagues found that ritual human sacrifice was relatively uncommon among egalitarian societies, with only about a quarter of them engaging in it.

But the vast majority of highly stratified societies — about two-thirds — made human sacrifices to the gods.
Is this a preview of what's to come?

XIC is the oldest fund (except the untalked about XIU) and as such will have the most capital gains. Also, it was created around the 2001 low so it's probably all capital gains. The other funds were created at higher prices and will have less.

The best solution is to report them to your email provider. The best solution is to learn how to recognize this kind of stuff and ignore it. It's the one thing you/we can do to help others who can't recognize it. The email provider will put an alert or place it in the spam folder if enough people report it. I don't understand why people find this so difficult to do. Do they really think someone they don't know is trying to give then something. Really? People need to be educated about that? Actually this is by design. Someone could probably make an email that would initially trick even you. The point is to screen out the intelligent and make sure only complete idiots respond to the email. That way they waste less time trying to fleece someo...

It's a waste of time to report these to any agency. Think about it, has it slowed them down any? Years ago I used to fwd them to RBC? I think as they're the only ones who ever sent an automated thank you.

The best solution is to report them to your email provider. GMail knows about all of them and I never even see them. The reason to check your spam folder and make sure they're all marked correctly is to improve their algorithm for phishing, spam and legit emails. I used to get french emails marked as spam, but it's since improved.
