Re: Where to retire?

Some people may relocate for retirement for fiscal benefit, or maybe climate reasons,(golf/sailing/gardening) however one should not overlook the benefit of the network of ones' friends.

I know some couples who chose to sell and relocate to better climates and such, but then found themselves remote from their families and bereft of long time friends.

A variation on that old Freak Brothers thing about "drugs will get you through times of no money much better than money will get you through times of no drugs". 8)

For me, having access to a good family doctor and responsible specialists with less than a two years wait time is important.

Re: Oil Sands of Alberta

Tobacco is in decline, and rising prices can only be stretched so far. The analogy isn't perfect, but if push came to shove, tobacco would be the first to go, followed by alcohol and caffeine. Energy is essential. I think it will all come down to popular opinion, which means voter sentiment. If this climate change thing keeps progressing, (worldwide) popular opinion will sway in favor of restricting oil sands development, Democrat or Republican, Harper or whoever. I wonder how much sway the really big oil producers (Imperial) have over national governments? 2 yen Interestingly the really big oil producers are national governments. Exon Mobile/Imperial are runts in the litter. http://www.petrostrategies.org/Links/worlds_largest_oil_and_gas_...

Re: TFSA 2014

Your wife's TFSA is hers alone. It is an "envelope" registered with CRA into which she puts funds, regardless of those funds. (Outside of money laundering.) The limit of those funds was initially $5K per year and then, in in the past few years $5.5K per year. A TFSA does not recognize spousal contributions - a TFSA is simply an individual savings vehicle. Should your wife use the money you give her and triple it in one year, it means nothing with respect to your taxes or claims. She could, however, take that tripled money out, give the funds to you, and then put the same amount of money back into her TFSA the next calendar year plus the new calendar year amount of $5.5K There are no tax deductions at all with respect to a TFSA, ga...

Re: HR Reit 15% Non Resident Withholding Tax

Anyone having 15% non-resident withholding tax applied to HR Reit distributions? I hold hr.un in two accounts, one with TD Waterhouse and one with Questrade. On the May 30th distribution, I noticed Questrade began applying 15% withholding tax. No withholding at TD Waterhouse. Here.s the question to Questrade and their reply. To me, it seems odd that one broker would apply tax one way, another broker another way: shouldn.t it be uniform? Any feedback is welcome, thanks in advance! ORIGINAL QUESTION: On May 30th, HR Reit (hr.un) paid out a distribution of 0.1125 on xxx units for a payout of $ xxx. On the 'Account Activity' page today, it shows that $ xxx or 15% of that distribution was withheld because of non-resident withholding tax. I am a...

Because politicians make the rules.

If you wish to change this you will need to become a politician, only to discover that you will change your views rather than the rules. Such is the irony.

Re: The Intrinsic Value of a Higher Education

Had I not gone to university, I probably would still have opted to move out of home, and probably would have boughten a car. Or you may have purchased a car. (Ha) Quite deliberate. One day, I was walking home with my girlfriend from a trip to the grocery store. As we got home, I said "jeez, I should have boughten that." Her jaw dropped (I was in graduate school at the time). I said it was just something my mother would have said -- when I was with my girlfriend, I tended to speak informally. It's called diglossia -- code switching between the vernacular and the educated forms of speech. With a little bit of research, I discovered that my mother's tongue was perfectly grammatical (broughten, caughten) and a residue of the o...

The rules for an etf can only be based on past performance. An individual investor can respond to current events.

Re: Dividend and distribution hikes (2014)

Have held this company since late 1990's- first bought it when it was Edper Brascan and it was tanking. There was lots of controversy regarding the company at that time- "old boys club" and such...that was partly true.

Bruce Flatt brought some focus to the company and it has been one of my best holdings ever since. I think it should be considered a growth company and not a dividend company.

My holdings have split three times as well as receiving spin outs for BIP and BPY.UN.

...Our plans can change. I am wondering if setting up a charitable foundation with my daughter as trustee, might be a good idea? Any way, I don't expect others to share my views on this but I thought I would give you my perspective. For ten years, we had our will set up with two sons as joint trustees for a charitable trust. On the last iteration 5 years ago, we simplified it to 50% to charity and the remainder split between them. We decided that the trust was too much like trying to manage from the grave. There have been some significant changes in British Columbia regarding probate, estate law, and wills. You may wish to explore these further. I don't claim to be an expert however a friend has advised me that recent legislation in BC has...

Re: BIP.UN

Thank you both for your replies.

It is interesting that you can download your T5013 from TDW - I hold my BIP.UN through CIBC - received the shares after the spin out and at that time this account was held in CIBC Wood Gundy, minimal paper work received at that time, documentation always arrives late from the office in the Bahamas.

I may just estimate my income, pay my tax, and then file a follow-up claim.

Thanks again.

Re: BMO Investorline

How do you DRIP USA stocks at BMO? I have set up for Canadian stocks. But was told I can't do American stocks ?????? The paper work for ACB will smother you - I suggest. DRIPS in non-taxable accounts may be a good strategy but in a taxable/cash account could be a nightmare for paper work. Add in US stocks and you could be busy all year and not even be able to walk your dog. I remember reading an issue of the Investment Reporter several years ago that provided a method of tracking ACB DRIP in a taxable account - you could check in your local library or maybe on their web site. As I get older the tedious record keeping and tax calculation become the issue for me. The less one needs to deal with the government the better life becomes. ...

I was told several years ago that many financial transactions, both electronic and paper, had been closely scrutinized and controlled due to post 9/11 changes. IFIR correctly a $50K electronic transaction was subject to investigation by all countries involved in that transaction - and even some not involved.
