Re: joint T5 interest with son after death

My wife was joint owner of my Mother in Law's GICs. When my Mother in Law died, we simply split the proceed with the other beneficiaries. You didn't specify what province you live in - maybe rules differ. No probate required in our case.

I agree with Mordco. I have a higher risk tolerance for equities since I have a DB pension.

Re: UFile 2023

Cyber Monday pricing for UFile online:
$18.95 for single. $27.95 for a couple.

I still don't understand why they charge less for the Windoze software when it comes on a CD in a box with shipping costs.

Re: CIBC and Simplii - Deceased person

Thanks for the condolences. I talked to CIBC and the rep said that Simplii is a separate entity and they cannot help. Go deal with them. So I called Simplii. This rep was very helpful. She created an estate file and told me that I can deal with the local CIBC branch as my b-i-l had done business with CIBC in the past - she looked it up. So the Simplii and CIBC systems are interconnected . She gave me a file number that I can give to the CIBC rep. The CIBC rep can upload a copy of the original will and death certificate to the file which means I won't have to get the documents notarised. She told me that Simplii took over Presidents Choice Financial, so the PCF account and the Simpii accounts are one and the same. She also told me...

CIBC and Simplii - Deceased person

My b-i-l died last week and I'm his executor. He has a bank account at Simpii Financial. (Maybe President's Choice Financial too)
I'm going to set up an estate account at the local CIBC branch.

Do you know if CIBC can move the Simplii account into the estate account? Or do I have to deal with Simplii separately?

Re: Electric Cars

If necessary, they could ship the batteries separately and install them at the destination.

Lots of hybrids on the road around here and I don't see many on fire.

Re: Electric Cars

I have been watching a fair amount of Australian TV lately. The Chinese cars are selling very well mainly due to much lower prices. It shouldn't be too long until we see them on our roads. I doubt that they will be using batteries from either Volkswagen and Stellantis.

Re: Who is online?

I belong to a board where we discuss restoring classic vehicles. Last month, we noticed we were having hundreds of "visitor" bots scanning the site eating up large amounts of bandwidth. These bots originated in China and Israel. They were not following the rules so new firewall entries have now blocked them.

The Chinese bots originated from Huawei and TikToc.

Yes, Vancouver Island gets the best view (in Canada) of the solar eclipse with 75% coverage. Unfortunately for us, a cloudy day with 70% chance of showers is the current prediction.

Re: Flying with Multiple Tickets

So Expedia says Alaska is the "validating" airline and they will help us if we miss the connection. Tickets are first class so I think we will be OK. I have to contact Alaska to give them my mileage plan and passport numbers so I will double check with them.

Re: Flying with Multiple Tickets

So, missed connection is the greatest concern. I like the idea of using an agent to get one ticket/itinerary. So now I'm looking at booking the trip through Expedia. Hopefully, they will issue one ticket. Alaska and Hawaiian are not "partners" but they have an "alliance" whatever that means.

Flying with Multiple Tickets

I'm used to flying with one return ticket. There might be multiple legs with multiple airlines but still just one ticket.

I want to go to the big island of Hawaii. I used to book with Alaska; YYJ - SEA - KOA and return was easy and quick. Changing planes at SEA was not too bad time wise. Now, there are fewer flights and overnight layovers.

It looks like that if I fly Alaska to HNL and switch to Hawaiian Airlines, the trip will be shorter with no overnight layovers. Hawaiian has flights almost hourly between the HNL and KOA. But now I will have 2 tickets on 2 different airlines.

Can you see any drawbacks? Security? Checking bags?

Hum, thanks for the feedback, I initiated a $1 withdrawal yesterday to test just that. Two or three days would be better.
If you need the money right away, it can be a problem. Recently, I sold some shares on a Friday. The earliest I could transfer the proceeds of the sale to my CU was Wednesday AM. It's possible that the CU would put a temporary hold on the funds - I didn't test that - so that would add more time. If I had sold mutual fund units instead of shares, I would expect that the funds would not be available to transfer until Thursday AM.

I called HT and told them I wanted to close the account. She asked me why and I told her; repeated fake charges and loss of features. Anyway, I did not have to cut up my card and mail in the pieces. (she was surprised that the fraud dept told me to do that).

Account is closed.

Re: Telephone scams

Got an email and phone message from Home Trust VISA fraud. Four suspicious transactions in Lima, Peru-today, six bucks and change each. Confirmed fraud with them by phone, under 5 min toll-free call. Card compromised, they said, will get new card by mail. I don't employ the card that much-last use, more that two months ago. I got the same phone message from HT Visa. It seemed legit as they had my name and the last 4 digits of the card. Still, I hung up and called the number on the back of the card. Yes, there was a charge to Charles Darwin for $8 so my card is now locked. This is at least the fourth time that this has happened to my HT Visa. I told the rep that I don't want this card anymore as it has been compromised several times, plus t...

It's possible that you will be able to update the batteries in your hybrid to the newer technology like this company offers:
https://projectlithium.com/

There should be pressure put on the car manufacturers to give owners the option to upgrade. Extending the life of the vehicles on the road now will be good for the environment.

Are you close to VCNS? VBAL?
65% equities so I'm between VBAL and VGRO. I probably would have bought VBAL if was around 10+ years ago. Capital gains tax discourages selling today so I won't be switching.
