I think this is the first time I have seen this I always thought if you have $125k of DYN6000 at BNS and $100k of DYN6000 held anywhere else you would only have $100k coverage.Further still, each brokerage creates a separate trust with the issuer, so you could have $100,000 of DYN6000 in iTrade, and another $100,000 of DYN6000 at some other brokerage, and those are two separate $100,000 pots of insurance. I think iTrade and Scotia McLeod are both just divisions of Scotia's brokerage arm, though, so the ISA/trust stuff would be combined as if they are one broker. So for your example, $100K of DYN6000 in a nonreg account at Scotiabank is covered, and $100K combined in nonreg iTrade/McLeod accounts.

Re: Canadians are bananas for not embracing index funds
Lots of if/buts and ands, and maybe for bad reasons I have decided to keep my CAD & US dividend portfolios running. Specifically thinking of the Canadian side at least anecdotally I have a chance of at least equaling the TSX60 maybe even doing way better. I'll even take half of what Portfolio Visualizer is predicting, more dollars, less volatility, lower drawdowns. It appears to me 5 and even 10 year returns aren't worth the trouble. It's not until you get out to the 20 year mark the dividend compounding seems to make a difference by then there is so much capital gains built up that's a problem.

Re: Power of Dividend Growth, 2023 (and beyond)
Conclusions Dividend investing is indeed evidence-based, but it’s slightly more complicated than index investing with a few important trade-offs to be aware of. For those who want to keep things simple and avoid the extra work and complexity that goes along with purchasing individual stocks, a low-fee index-ETF approach is a great way to invest. I recommend it all the time, especially for people without large amounts of money to invest or significant comfort and experience with investing. But the data is clear: dividend-paying stocks have offered higher returns and lower volatility than non-payers in many different market conditions. For Canadian investors, Beating the TSX has proven to be a simple and effective tool for building a portfol...

Oh crap I see the problem thanks for catching that
Note: The time period was constrained by the available data for Nutrien Ltd (NTR:CA) [Jan 2018 - Dec 2023].
Huh not sure I believe these numbers either. (Had to remove NTR for longer periods, replaced with 2.77% cash, and adjust to 2001 cause of SLF)

That is output copied from Portfolio Visualizer. Your right something isn't right somewhere cause a 7.98% return on $10k over 23 years isn't $15855?Mudcrab wrote: ↑24 Jan 2024 14:54 hi, I'm not sure I'm reading it correctly, but is this spreadsheet assuming in part that the return from XIU from 2000-2023 (23 years) was only 58% (end balance 15,855)?
Quote Media only goes to 10 years but shows 62% for XIU over just those 10 years without taking dividends into account, and 121% with reinvested dividends.
The results are based on the total return of assets and assume that all received dividends and distributions are reinvested

Long term portfolio was supposed to be 25% less volatile and provide 25% more income then XIU and have a chance to out-perfom. Got one out of three correct according to Portfolio Visualizer. (also checked how an equal weight would have done)

If I understand correctly WS will sell you fractional shares but
If you have $10k and want to buy as many BCE shares as you can you can't use a Limit order, it will buy fractional shares at xx.xxxx each?
If you use a limit order you can't buy fractional shares - Eg. you want to buy BCE at $55.99 you have to enter number of shares in a round number the decimal place is not there.

The spreadsheet implies a limit of 25 holdings and therefore imply each holding should have a target allocation of 100/25 = 4%.
I don't think anything less than a 5% stock position is all that worthwhile. I see you have CM as a 1% position. Why bother.

A few annoying things about Wealthsimple - no print function from your account to print out holdings or a download - no Realtime account view of transactions, at least at the moment on new account, have to wait for January statement to see info - some stock info but not the actual dollar dividend amount - no back button in program to move from viewing individual stock back to portfolio but back button on chrome works  - together with above if you go to help screen it doesn't open new screen and says Log-in making it seem like your logged out, but no a few Chrome back button clicks tales you back to live account. Haven't found time-out feature yet but none on iPad  - no level II quotes but everyone new that I guess - looks like y...

SCHD seems to look pretty good any specific reason or reasons for your guys to choose that one? Looks like VTI or SPY are pretty competitive except for one year drawdown numbers are better for SCHD? Very seldom does SCHD beat VTI or SPY for total return on a chart. Investing for income in an RSP?

Not passing judgement either way didn't read article critically enough. The Article wrote:
“People got excited by what they thought was a guaranteed 5-per-cent return,” said Benjamin Felix, portfolio manager and head of research at PWL Capital. “But it wasn’t as compelling as they were imagining.”
The problem is that the yields investors were rejoicing were nominal, in that they didn’t factor in the erosive effects of inflation.
He was dead on with this one, I got excited and still am that I can double my nominal return from 2.5% to 5% or more. (some at 6%) not a change in asset allocation for me.
