Re: Rebalancing my portfolio, problem with international exposure
Someone who has more knowledge than I in mutual funds will have to respond. The only time I have seen Class O referenced is when the fund is a holding itself in a wrap, i.e. one of several Class O funds in an overarching Class A or Class F fund. The point is to not to double dip on Management fees which is verboten by the regulator, and thus why you probably do not see a Management fee listed in such Class O funds.

Plus I suspect O class funds are not available to the retail investor.
The point of geographical diversification is diversification, capturing both good and not so good, which is not lnown in advance. Learn to live with what the market can reasonably provide over the long term.
The US market performed terribly during the first decade of this century and has been a barn burner for the past 10 years. No one knows what the next years will be.

Re: Access Code for tax return
I tried what you just tried and get the same results as you do. Based on https://www.taxchopper.ca/t1help/Q_filing/a00_nfacc.jsp 2nd option, it is supposed to show up but doesn't. Maybe CRA MyAccount is hooped this afternoon. Perhaps try later tonight when all the folks east of Winnipeg will be in bed.

Re: Small RRSP overcontribution. Do I need to do anything?
If you intended it to be a contribution for 2024, get CIBC to correct an obvious FU on their part. There is no reason why YOU should have to amend your 2023 return to include it as a 2023 contribution. They clearly didn't seem to understand March 5th is not Feb 29th.
As an aside, many years ago when I could still make a RRSP contribution, I avoided making a contribution anywhere close to the end of February to avoid that sort of thing. It is painful dealing with robots at the FIs.

Except there is no reason for CRA to know unless the sugar daddy claims these payments as a tax deduction.

Re: New T3 requirements for joint accounts [that might be bare trusts]
It's not perfect but it is not nothing either. That is what I think is going on, but it perhaps was not as well thought out as it should have been. I agree that it is 'not nothing', and if that is indeed the case, that will/can make a difference when it comes into play, e.g. legal versus beneficial owner(s). It could mean that if an adult child is a legal owner but not beneficial owner, that account will need to become an Estate asset. Not unlike that of a house property title where a parent might be on title as a 1% beneficial owner as a means for the adult child to qualify for a mortgage.. which has become a relatively common situation with mortgage lenders. In event of death, the parent only holds a 1% beneficial interest with the rest ...

The Japanese, like every other foreigner, who entered the Chinese market with JVs had to know full well they'd be thrown under the bus as soon as the Chinese figured out how to make an equivalent product themselves.

Re: New T3 requirements for joint accounts [that might be bare trusts]
I agree the indication of a type 2 account would likely be what an algorithm would look for as a potential flag. JTWROS accounts are probably the most abused type of account there are as regards attribution of income, avoiding probate or POA, etc. I have no idea whether CRA may be starting to look at them or now and my interest here is strictly intellectual/academic as we have no JTWROS accounts beyond our household operating bank account.

Re: Best High Interest Savings ETF
To be clear, and not misunderstood, I said 'newcomer to FWF', not 'newbie investor' which you clearly are not. If you're comfortable with what is known and has been studied about it being 'time in the market' that makes a difference, not 'timing of the market', nothing wrong about that. The VectorVest text I just Googled "Time in the market may be more suitable for passive, long-term investors while timing the market can be a better fit for those who are more active and experienced in their investment approach" kind of makes sense to me. FWIW, I do not consider an unsubstantiated comment from VectorVest to be anything but a conflict of interest. They have a product to sell for those into Technical Analysis and momentum trading. Th...

I believe there is only one SIN on such a tax slip though. That and Recipient type being a 1 (Individual) or 2 (Joint) is likely all that the data banks see.

Re: Inflation
It is not surprising given the momentum continuing in the US economy including fiscal deficits and lower impact of interest rates on US housing.
Still, like Canada, there was an inflection point about mid-2023 where the rate of CPI Index changes began to flatten a bit and that will become somewhat of a factor in the latter half of 2024. How much remains to be seen.

Re: Best High Interest Savings ETF
Maybe, maybe not. Who says the rates might be that low in the next year or two? Average inflation over the last 63 years was 3.8% and only slightly over 2.1% over the last thirty years. Without knowing the reasons why, that tells me that the next thirty years could be quite high, assuming a reversion to the mean. I was getting less than 1% at the start of the pandemic and I was in a similar cash position. I was able to buy real low when the pandemic hit the markets real hard. Was up about 42% then. Again at the start of the year, in a heavy cash position, I bought back in and was able to pull a 6.9% gain with my stock before cashing out. I’m not trying to time the market but I don’t like what I see in overall economic conditions. Seems to ...

What if it does not come until 2026 after the markets have moved up another 20%?
Your current 5.12% yield might be only 3% by the end of 2024 and maybe 1% by the end of 2025.

I could go places with that thought.... but gifting at arm's length is not taxable income. AFAIK, there is nothing to report to the CRA.

It is not the amount of the allowance that matters, It is a matter of what 'allowance' actually means, e.g. payment for services rendered, arms length gifting, etc.

Re: CIBC and Simplii - Deceased person
What I find as a total gong show on these sorts of things, CIBC/Simplii has to be dealing with an estate every week, if not every day. After all, there are some 330k deaths each year, maybe half of which are going to have multiple accounts and institutions. One would think there would be a well oiled machine to handle this stuff.....but no, one is left to believe each and every instance is a foreign concept.
I don't recall having a major hassle with RBC (Royal Bank and RBC DI) some ~9 years ago with my mother's estate, but spouse's son went through the hoops for months a few years ago with TD on a rather simple estate.

Re: Electric Cars
Ah, but I am pretty confident they will now that they know the demand is wanting. To my recollection, they seldom design and produce a product they don't think the marketplace will buy. There is always a lag time but i would not underestimate their ability to deliver. I am not a fan of most of their products and it has been a long time since I owned a Toyota but I have due respect for them.Marcus Aurelius wrote: ↑10 Mar 2024 21:24 Toyota's position would be stronger if they actually were making enough PHEV cars. Re: Electric Cars
This CNN article on Toyota's PHEV vs BEV position doesn't say anything new BUT it does reinforce the need for some pragmatism and corporate sensibility not to hurtle headlong into a market that simply is not transitioning as fast as some idealists would like. It makes no sense to build what people are not yet buying (yet) and to forego what the real market is demanding. Toyota is taking all sorts of misplaced anger that will almost certainly be proven right in retrospect. It is no different than the bashing O&G is taking providing products people still want and need for decades to come. How long the transition will take is anyone's guess but it is measured in multiple decades.

It probably will be one combined T5 (per corporate* entity) as I assumed a year ago. I do not have my 2023 T5 paper copy yet but I saw it on CRA MyAccount some days ago (simply says Bank of Montreal).
FWIW, Scotiabank combines the CAD and USD versions on a per corporate entity basis but they also say so on the back of the T5.
* as in Bank of Montreal entity. Another one would come from BMMC, etc. if you bought anything other than BMT104 and BMT124.

Why would you really care about differences of +/- 15bp or so? Chances are there will be variability between all of them from month to month, or quarter to quarter.
