Re: Starting an exercise program...
I'm finding it somewhat difficult to motivate myself (though easy to make excuses) It is indeed easy to make excuses but motivation must be strong enough to overcome them. Having had 3 cardiac surgeries my motivation is to maintain a level of cardiovacular fitness. So after finishing my 3rd cardiac rehab program 4 years ago my exercise prescription was walking 5 km in 54 minutes at least 5 times a week. I maintain this year round even on vacation (except recently as noted in the Travel and Vacation thread where I was on a hiking holiday in Alberta). Added to the program by the Rehab Institute since I was first in the program 27 years ago is resistance training for muscle strength which I do with weights twice a week. This has been found to...

An amazingly long career. A song from Leonard Cohen from his new album to be released later in September in time for his 80th birthday.

Re: Travel/Vacations
Just had a week hiking in Alberta visiting with a friend I worked with in Toronto. He lives in Sundance Calgary near the entrance to Fish Creek Provincial Park. We did a couple of hikes in Fish Creek. Each day checked the latest bear advisories on line to plan our excursions. On a hike in Waterton Lakes a couple of years ago we were a bit spooked by a plaque saying that we were entering a grizzly habitat. Then in order Lake Agnes and Little Beehive lookout at Lake Louise starting from beside the Chateau. Lake Louise was a zoo with the crowds. However by the time you were at the teahouse and Beehive Lookout (fabulous views) - the Chateau looked like a doll's house with its turquoise lake. The crowds were non existent as the climb was pretty ...

Re: Good and/or Underrated Movies and TV shows
Talking of Frankie Valli, I recently saw Jersey Boys (2014) the story of The Four Seasons. I thought Clint Eastwood did a great job capturing this story and using original cast members of the stage play including John Lloyd Young as Franki Valli was inspired. I saw the stage play in Toronto a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.

Heard an interview with the director of 'Altman' a documentary about the late film director. Who can forget the Korean War black comedy MASH (1970) or the TV series of the same name M*A*S*H (1972–1983) with the incomparable Alan Alda.

Re: Good and/or Underrated Movies and TV shows
A fascinating look at the history and role of aviation in World War I.
4 Years of Thunder is a four part series. The many types of aircraft and the men who played a part - Names such as Billy Bishop, Von Richthofen (the Red Baron), the Lafayette Escadrille, Rickenbacker, La Guardia, and Mitchell.
The pilots led a more comfortable existence than the soldiers in the trenches but for many their lifespan was just as short.

Re: Novice seeks advice
Good clarification.
Its the reason that I am comfortable in holding a significant portion of short duration bond funds in my RRIF as I expect that the duration will take care of increases in interest rates.

This report says that Commercial Planes Routinely Fly Over Conflict Zones, From Ukraine to Syria
Apparently MH 17 was following an approved flight path. However a report I saw said that Air Canada and some other carriers had avoided this zone prior to the incident.
When planning a future trip does your due diligence also have to include what your carriers normal flight routing is?
Korean Air Lines Flight 007 and Iran Air Flight 655 were both victims of shoot first and ask questions later, one by each super power.

Re: Snowbird, stay put, or relocate
Interesting and informative article in the G & M Choosing the right place to retire overseas For more affordable city living, we'd suggest Quito, Ecuador; Panama City, Panama; Mérida or Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Bilbao, Spain; and in Asia, Bangkok,Thailand and Penang, Malaysia. The authors of the article (extracted from their book) apparently have settled in Quito Ecuador. Our kcowan winters in PV. Our advice: The easiest places to retire — in our opinion — are close to home, just a few hours by plane from the United States or Canada (although we can't deny the appeal of Uruguay, despite its long distance from the States). Costa Rica, Mexico, and Panama are well-developed countries where you'll find all the amenities of home, including w...

I don't believe Tedster is talking about downloads.
The option within Quicken for reconciling an account such as a chequing account is the same as you would do manually or with a spreadsheet.
I use this option to reconcile my chequing account each month. I manually enter my deposits or payments usually as received or paid.

Don't understand why there are references to maximum RRIF withdrawals in this thread.
RRIFs have a mandatory minimum withdrawal. There is no maximum.
However with LIFs there is a mandatory minimum withdrawal (same rate as for RRIFs) but also a maximum allowed withdrawal.

I have family connections in Holland and have been in The Netherlands many times. My observations of the many Dutch people I know is that they are very level headed people and slow to anger (somewhat unlike me with my Celtic heritage). The outrage of what happened and is happening at the crash site in the Ukraine has really stirred up these normally placid people.

Switching to a private or incognito window (depending on the browser) can get you around the article limit. However in the GlobeInvestor many articles are inside the Unlimited designation. I have noticed that when I look at the Globe App on my Blackberry Playbook some of the articles there are from inside the Unlimited version. I often have a quick look in bed. This morning the article 'This ETF should be a core holding for income investors' is a case in point. For what it's worth it is by Gordon Pape about XEI. Both ZDV and XEI were mentioned by Dan Hallett some time ago in the forum. ZDV is part of my BMOIL holdings. Looking at the specifics for XEI it is one of those ETFs that Blackrock reduced the management fees and is now 0.2%. By con...
