I would agree that it is a fair deal. However, you need to look at your personal situation to determine if it makes sense to you. For me, I don't really care about capital gain at this point. I am building passive income. I've bought more ENB though I have had what one might call a "full" position.

Re: Is Vanguard still the best option?

I think it might be a bit harsh to say it is always about seeking alpha.
There are other motivations in being more selective in choosing securities.
For example: ethics (ESG). "more secure" income versus total return..etc..

Perhaps some of these ETFs legitimately require more managerial work?

Yabbut if you were in-store, any store, Galen's or someone else's, and a sale item is out of stock you'd face the same decision.
Metro had a better policy. If you ordered a discounted store brand that was unavailable, they'd sub in a name brand for the same price.
Maybe this digression can be spun off into a different thread?

Poker tournament last night, $1500 first prize.

Guy is UTG, mad with his cards he has, mucks his hand as hard as he can on table. As the donkey has mucked his hand is there action? In other words no misdeal if someone has a invalid hand?

As he mucks his hand the cards slide on the table and reveal he has three cards, he starts yelling misdeal. His friend immediately to my right mucks his pocket sevens before I can stop any action.

Of course I have fish hooks, I say those are just dead hands no misdeal.
It is a misdeal provided attention has been called to the error before two players have acted on their hands. And that is what happened if it was the UTG guy who complained. AFAIK. ..Sucks to have had those jacks.

10K into BMT 4.85% for 12 months comes out to $495.93 interest for the first year.
a) there is nothing to stop you from moving your cash from TING to BMT104 after your TING promo ends.
b) there is absolutely no guarantee that BMOIL will keep BMT104 at 4.85%. It may go up next week. It may go down. You are fooling yourself if you think it is fixed for any duration of time.

In other words, your argument is built on some false premises.

Re: What and why did you sell? What might you sell? (2023)

FTS is yielding 4.21% currently. A HISA can yield 4.85+% currently (like BMT104 at BMOIL for example). By holding FTS you are risking both loss of principal and loss of yield. If it is in a registered account then you are not even benefiting from the dividend tax credit on that yield and you can sell free of capital gains tax. One might think it is time to step off the merry-go-round and wait for it to change its tune before jumping back on. What keeps me on the ride currently? Just the hope of future capital gain and/or dividend growth ..and the reluctance to alter my investment approach. Am I buying more dividend growth equities right now? Not in a registered account. In non-registered, it is a wait-and-see game.. waiting for bigger barga...

Re: Inflation

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark lending rate by a quarter point Wednesday, lifting interest rates to their highest level in 22 years. It’s the 11th rate increase since the Fed began its inflation fight in March 2022, and comes just one month after the central bank hit pause in order to assess the state of the economy after the failures of three regional banks since the spring. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell attends a press conference in Washington, D.C., the United States, on June 14, 2023. The Federal kept the target range of the federal funds rate unchanged at 5 percent to 5.25 percent, following a slew of 10 consecutive hikes since March 2022. Fed officials are estimating one more rate hike this year, according to their la...

TC Energy is making a deleveraging move this morning . Not horrible or surprising, in my opinion. TC Energy Corporation (TSX, NYSE: TRP) (TC Energy or the Company) announced that it has entered into an agreement to monetize a 40 per cent interest in its Columbia Gas Transmission, LLC (Columbia Gas) and Columbia Gulf Transmission, LLC (Columbia Gulf) systems. Columbia Gas and Columbia Gulf will be held in a new joint venture partnership with Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). Total proceeds for the transaction are expected to be $5.2 billion (US$3.9 billion) in cash, to be paid at closing, subject to certain customary adjustments. The value of the 40 per cent equity interest implies an enterprise value to a comparable EBITDA1 multiple of ...

Re: Allocating 10% of my portfolio to an REIT ETF. Which one?

Consumption worked out great but I am still consuming and living in a house so no profit. In my opinion, that is a strange and flawed way to look at it. Try the following perspective on for size: If I bought a house for 500K and sold it for a million then there is a capital gain of 500K. This is "gross" profit. If I bought stock in an unregistered account for 500K and sold it for a million then there is a capital gain of 500K. This is "gross" profit. In the case of the house, I may decide to rent or move into my parent's basement or buy a smaller house in a less expensive area or ..whatever. The point is I am not compelled to turn around and invest my "gross" profit into a house of the same value. In the case ...

Knowing that it was the long weekend should not excuse this delay. If non-brokerage financial institutions (e.g., Tangerine and Oaken) display their distributions and balances on July 1st, surely when it comes to (at least their) HISAs BMOIL can do a better job than making clients wait an extra 5 days.
The HISA distributions were there for me on July 4th. We had the weekend + Canada Day on July 3rd so it was timely enough for me.
