Re: Any questions about CPP?
No, the data suggested that on average women live longer than men. If the women in your family died of disease passed down genetically you might be able to get screened for that. If they died in car crashes because they were lousy drivers your longevity projection might be more like that of the men in your family. Unless you too happen to be a lousy driver. I don't know that poor driving is genetic but some of the traits that cause it might be. FWIW, Stat Can also does projections for health-adjusted life expectancy. FWIW#2, I recall reading that medical history of siblings, especially older ones, is more applicable than medical history of parents and relatives outside the immediate family. That makes sense since each sibling has genes fro...

Re: Any questions about CPP?
Thanks for this.
I’m skeptical because data suggested women live longer than men but that didn’t work out for my mom nor was it true for my aunts. The males are all still alive and kicking in their mid to high 80s
My gut tells me that I’m more genetically similar to mom than dad

Population-scale actuarial data didn’t really help me understand why/how some friends and family have passedMarcus Aurelius wrote: ↑06 Jul 2023 02:38OK, but you are going to have do more than quip a one-liner. What part of using population-scale actuarial data to make your decisions seems like gut feeling? I am happy to be proven wrong in my assumptions (honestly).
I mean the data suggests that I’ll live until 88 years old but will I?
How much should I rely on that data when making decisions when I’m 60? 100%? 80%? Feels like I will be going by my gut feel?

Question:
Does the SPIVA report look at how active dividend investment managers do against a passive dividend benchmark?
Is that category even a thing?

That all sounds like gut feeling to meMarcus Aurelius wrote: ↑27 Jun 2023 12:41 Absolutely true. If you have good evidence that you will live shorter than average, then taking CPP early is best. Also, if you need the money, taking it early is an obvious choice. Not everyone has the luxury of delaying.
However, if you aren't in those situations, then delaying is probably better. Any investment option is an educated "guess" of some kind. Investing in the markets is a guess. You want to statistically tilt those guesses in your favour. You can't make those decisions on gut feeling.

I don't know why they pulled the plug on it, it was really entertaining.

I agree
If someone wants to document their journey then have at it
It happens all the time on every other social media platform
Having said that, every other platform also allows criticism as long as it doesn’t break the TOS
Both fair game

Re: Healthcare wait times.
Healthcare fails at the margins
Patients wait in pain as a surgeon fights to get paid — all in a battle over health-care dollars
Multiple surgeons who spoke to CBC News also stressed that there's a growing provincial push to address backlogs of more common, standardized spinal procedures — such as disc replacements or laminectomies to relieve pressure on the spinal cord — leaving little room for complex cases like spinal deformity surgeries to get booked in the first place.

The TFSA isn’t for you.
It’s for whomever ends up using it.
Pretty much dead money.
Similar to dying in your home without the benefit of shelter.

Re: Retirement and the meaning of life
Just finished the second video. Thanks for sharing; more adjectives but unfortunately nothing new for me in this one either
I still don’t believe that person in their 60s is not self aware enough to consider these topics decades earlier
I struggled with what makes life worthwhile/meaning/hedonic treadmills/aesthetics/pratītyasamutpāda in my 30s after attempting to retire a couple times and tried to read Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre and others for help
I hope these videos enlighten people way before they are in their 60s. Otherwise it would just be sad

Re: Retirement and the meaning of life
Leaving the work-world: the meaning of retirement (26 minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWfMzf8hSzE Watched the first video … don’t take this the wrong way but I hope most people realize all the basic ideas he covered way before they turn 60 … it would be very sad otherwise I already understood these rudimentary observations in my teens (read viktor frankl book in high school) and in my 20s I was working on a way to shortcut the system and by my late 30s I was out … Who doesn’t know this stuff? Honest question. I can’t imagine a 35 year old grown a$$ adult not understanding all of this. Seriously I suspect that he already knew everything he talks about but was too scared to say it for fear of losing his job/license/tenure/whatever....
