Re: Tax paid Dividends

Looking through my accounts at TDDI, they seem to use "TXPDDV" for distributions from Canadian ETFs and also for a REIT pref that isn't pure dividend income. So extrapolating, I'd guess it's for distributions that are likely to be of mixed tax nature, i.e., not always of pure dividend or pure intere...

RBCDI is also showing Home Trust and HomEquity Bank 5-year GICs @ 3.03 %.

Next week it will be time to evacuate Simplii's HISA. I plan to move part of the proceeds to such a GIC if still available.

Re: Ditching XIU and replacing with...

XIC and friends do their job of mirroring the Canadian equity market very well. Some may not like to have a large exposure to that market by itself. But even so, they could put part of their Canadian equity money into the market to get a fair bit of diversification, and use the rest to fill up the s...

Re: Telephone scams

Forewarned is forearmed. Be careful out there because the perps have clearly thought through how to operate this scam, particularly how your landline works when a call ends. Certainly a clever and sophisticated scam. I recall a few years ago one based on the same feature was discussed here, and it ...

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2018)

Might it be suggested it was on the side of your hardware/software and not their website ? It took me all of 30 seconds today. The wait-time I experienced for the T5 to display in the browser (over 20 minutes on dial-up) was due to the slow Internet connection. This suggests about 5-6 MB of data wa...

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2018)

My experience with the EQ Bank online T5 this year was as frustrating as it was last year. When you click to generate the document, it then displays the T5 in the browser. This should not be necessary, it should just download like any statement. The T5 seems to be formatted very inefficiently, as it...

Re: Where to park USD cash?

I just bought some tdb8150 so it will show up in my account tomorrow? At TDDI a TDB8150 trade will typically show up in the Orders as filled, and on the Activity page, sometime in the morning of the day after the trade. That would be tomorrow morning if you bought before 3pm ET today. It will proba...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2018)

Recently I sold about a half-dozen varied individual stocks and replaced them with a broad-market Canadian ETF. They were mostly large-caps, big banks, insurance, energy, utility, mining. Reasons for: Diversification. Simplicity: This was the biggest reason. Gone are over 30 dividends [per year] to ...

Greetings FWF, Long-time reader of FWF but this is my first post... Welcome to the forum as a poster! No, I don't have any add-ons or plug-ins. These types of problems for me are both typical and intermittent. Likely the statements will mysteriously show up tomorrow or the next day.

EDIT: Statements showed up on 16th and are downloaded.

Well, TD has acquired AI company Layer 6, so everything should continue to be great. It's pretty surreal reading that PR syrup in the backdrop of WebBroker/EasyWeb realities (not only recent).

Re: Bonds - Rolling Down The Yield Curve, theory vs real-life experience

I believe the "rolling down" benefit assumes the yield when you sell the bond is less than when you bought it, for a simple example if the yield curve is normal (not inverted) and static (doesn't change). But if interest rates are rising, as they may (or may not) from here, this would reduce or even...

Re: 2017 ETF re-invested distributions

A question that comes to mind: since this reinvested distribution got distributed on January 4, 2018, would this amount be used to adjust the cost basis of your XIC shares not for this year's tax return (2017), but next year's tax return (2018)? As in, the ACB for the 2017 tax return would be whate...

Re: 2017 ETF re-invested distributions

The thing is, though, even for the phantom distributions they give a "payable date" of Jan 4, 2018 (in the case of iShares). It's a good question, I don't really know what this means. ISTR that at the brokers the distributions are reported with this date attached. But at the end of the day you're ge...

Re: How Did You Do in 2017?

I suspect very strongly the FT value is 29 Dec 2016 to 29 Dec 2017. So it
is including 30 Dec 2016 movement, which shouldn't be part of the 2017
return. Using the FT value of 54,002.68 for 29 Dec 2017 I get the exact
2017 return to be 9.095 %.

Re: Outstanding Financial Pornography

Well, if they sold today (the 29th) it settles in 2018 so that's when the capital gain is taxable. That said, the term "year-end profit taking" is kind of loose, does it mean taking the tax hit for 2017 or does it mean taking the price available in 2017 ?
