I was in a similar situation in 2008.
I left a job, the pension estimate was some peanuts in 25 years...not indexed to inflation, so I took the money 20K and put all of it in S&P500 ETF.
It went down quite a bit in 2009, but since then, needless to say, it's done well. I didn't touch it and now 16 years later it's at 126K (me thinks).
Probably my best investment to balance off investments that didn't do anything good in the same period (EAFE)

As much as I hate the big 3, I end up with their services... I was with Zoomer wireless, Rogers bought it and killed it.
I've done the song and dance with smaller providers, and trying to use tech (data only) to lower my bills, but that doesn't work very well for me.

Re: Canadian Universities Finances
Y'all missing something, the international student cap is at a level that would seems astronomically high only a few years ago. However, it mostly applies to 'fake' students (people using student visa as another form of immigration). My son is in Waterloo (UW), their numbers didn't change much, however Conestoga college (also in Waterloo), the absolute leader in international student enrollment is now at 30K compared to 6K in 2018 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/international-student-study-permits-data-1.7125827 So basically the cap has very little to do with good schools or their budget issues. Clason makes some good points. The cost of running must be the issue. Also 500K salary for uni president seems high. Associate profs making ...

I figured, I don't want to retire now, I simply can spend more time doing things I want.

Go for it. I've been some 18 ya, to Gros Morne, backpacked the Long Range Traverse.
I want to go again, planning it all the time, but my son (misguided youth) prefers more 'popular' places.
NL is awesome and under travelled. A good friend lives in the middle of nowhere on the east side.
Consider hiking sections of East Coast Trail. July is the best weather.

I tried it, don't use it. It's for more active traders, different interface, more info on the screen etc.
I don't recall if it provides L2 quotes.
I recall comments about it before, you may want to search...

travel to BC end of April?
Hi all,
I am wondering where to go for about a week in the end of April for a vacation.
Some hiking would be great. That's for 2 adults travelling from ON.
Presently debating between Calgary/Banff, may be catch some end of season skiing and hiking on mostly snow covered trails.
vs
BC - fly to Vancouver (I am not really interested in the city) - where to go what to do? Vancouver island?
I am not a fun of crowded places.
I was thinking about going to AZ and Utah to visit the parks there, but the crowds and reservation systems put me off.
Thanks

Re: VBAL for CCPC account
There are other threads on this here.
In my CCPC, which is young and smallish, but is not expected to last long (at least, that's the plan), I invest in Can Divs ETF and Can pref shares ETF.
I balance this by investing in mostly ex-Canada equities in my personal accounts and Canadian FI in RSP.
This way I maintain my FI/Eq ratio, as well, as minimize/control exposure to Canadian equities.

To clarify - my comment was made in jest, but every joke...Bylo Selhi wrote: ↑23 Feb 2024 08:24Huh? Not all boomers are fortunate enough to have this problem. Many have the opposite problem, depending on others, from Ottawa to their kids, to stay solvent.
I am not willing to write a book on the subject, but I firmly believe that the youth of today is in much worse shape economically, compared to boomers' youth (in Canada). An entry level job today (if you can find it) doesn't pay for basic necessities.

Even the PDF someone posted mentions Merton and inflation protected ladder of government bonds.

OT, I guess. Tesla's had a very high short interest for a while, so there's a lot of 'active' players out there.
I have no numbers for market shares, but I also guess, institutional investors are mostly 'active' (I do not mean university endowments here, but the 'players').

I did and I do. As I approach retirement, at least as a theoretical possibility, and as I continue to learn:
60/40 doesn't cut it for everyone
I prefer safe approach to a probabilistic one (I do have 10 years of min expenses in RRB and cash now).

Re: Investment income in a CCPC
Let's say I keep a cash reserve in the corporation, invested in HISA.
Were I to take out a shareholder loan, I could invest this money outside of the corp in the same HISA and pay less tax, assuming my personal MTR is lower than CCPC tax on interest. Anything wrong with this move?
