Re: Covid-19: Practical tips for daily life

Wow, no compassion on my part and I'm on my high horse. You'd think a bag of whole potatoes was an expensive food or something. Are they difficult to cook. No. I have them quite often, boiled or baked.

II can see the processed food industry has done it's job very well here in Canada. Perhaps too well. Sorry if I don't personally buy into it.

Anyhow, I'll get off my high horse now.

Oh, and we do give to our local charities every year. No compassion, indeed. I'll leave shaking my head on that one.

Re: Covid-19: Practical tips for daily life

Calories are calories. A hungry person will be pleased to receive frozen potatoes, provided that they can thaw them out. George Did you even bother to check out the nutrition and ingredients list for these highly addictive, heavily processed, salty, oily products? If the people who need to go to a food bank, want to convert a "whole" potato to something similar, then they should have the option to do that, not the other way round. What does Canada's Food Guide say in regards to healthy eating? https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/healthy-eating-recommendations/ Limit highly processed foods. If you choose these foods, eat them less often and in small amounts. Prepare meals and snacks using ingredients that have little to no added sodiu...

I knew I'd seen it somewhere in the last few weeks and then all of a sudden the  flashed on. Yes, the article was at Norm's website.

I say much the same about the near and distant future direction of the Canadian stock market.

I don't know

Re: Covid-19: Practical tips for daily life

When I first saw the headline a few days ago, I gave McCains the thumbs up.

McCain Foods donates 20 million pounds of potatoes to support Canadian food banks

Even a nice picture under the headline showing healthy whole potatoes.

The when I read the actual script "McCain Foods is donating 20 million pounds of potato products to food banks across the country".

What was the matter with giving the food banks just "whole potatoes"? Crap food is crap food no matter who you give it to.

Now I give them the thumbs down.

I haven't sold a thing this calendar year. Perhaps I'm getting closer and closer to Robert Kirby's coffee can portfolio, circa 1984. More than likely not though. Have to have some investment flexibility.

Re: The Great Depression

Just thought I would make a list of Canadian companies that not only were created before or during the Great Depression but may or may not have been listed on the stock exchanges during that era. I culled this list from wikipedia and added a few of my own and I'm sure there may be a few names missing. There will have been name changes as well and some of these companies are now defunct. Air Canada 1937 Bank of Montreal 1817 Bank of Toronto 1855 BC Tel 1904 Bell Canada 1880 Brookfield Asset Management 1899 Canada Trust 1864 Canadian Bank of Commerce 1867 Canadian National Railway 1918 Canadian Pacific Railway 1881 Canadian Tire 1922 Corby Spirit & Wine 1859 Dofasco 1912 The Dominion Bank 1869 Domtar 1848 Electrohome 1907 Fairmont Hotels ...

Re: BMO Launches Three Asset Allocation ETFs

I suppose one can always say that all of these balanced funds have done what they were supposed to do in a major downturn. Even BMO Balanced ETF Portfolio A matched VBAL's performance year to date.

Doesn't mean I'd want to consider it for the long term though. Quite happy with Zbal's performance, so far.

Re: How this Bear market delivered some surprises.

I'm sure if Canadians got through the twenty years of a absolutely lousy Canadian stock and bond market during the 60's through to the early 80's and not even considering the Great Depression, we'll get out of this somehow. Perhaps just a little bit different. Some failures, a few industry mergers or company name changes perhaps. The only time I've seen investors wipe out completely is when they invest on margin or else a totalitarian regime takes over and confiscates all assets. I guess I should make room for outright stupidity as well, something I've been trying my best to avoid all my investing lifetime. So far, so good.

Re: How this Bear market delivered some surprises.

The only drawback is that perhaps a few times too often S&P decides to move a stock in their index from one sector to another. Not sure why this would be a problem S&P is not God? Just because TRP & ENB are now in the GICS Energy sector doesn't mean you have to hold them there. Depending on which sheet in my spreadsheet I have TRP & ENB split 1/3 to 2/3 Energy to Utilities, makes more sense to me. I'm certainly not telling others how to others how to set up their own portfolios, but aside from IPL cutting their dividend, pipelines haven't been a problem for me. I think pipelines have always been in the energy sector, as far as I remember, but I could be wrong. I sold my other more cyclical energy stocks a few years ago when...

Re: How this Bear market delivered some surprises.

You don't need ETF's to be sector diversified. I've been doing it with individual Canadian equities for the past decade.

The only drawback is that perhaps a few times too often S&P decides to move a stock in their index from one sector to another. Then when I move the position in my own spreadsheet one sector gets a bit inflated and the other is now short changed percentage wise.

The problem too is that you read reports that perhaps an investor shouldn't be in certain sector, when I can usually find a stock or two in there that I would be quite content to add to.

I guess we all do things differently. I didn't start making major changes to the RRSP's and taxable accounts until 2010, well after the financial crisis had ended. I never make changes to a portfolio during a major storm.

Re: How this Bear market delivered some surprises.

I haven't sold anything this calendar year. Fully invested. No personal debt.

Even little Leons Furniture threw us a dividend the other day, although I don't think that they will be able to do that much longer. Avoiding adding to a few individual equities already in the portfolio, but other than these few. still plenty of Canadian choices to be made whenever extra cash is available. Extra cash for us means $thousands, not tens of $thousands. Just to put it into perspective.

The only Canadian bank that I'm aware of that shows a long term dividend history and stock split on their website, in this case going back to the late 1800's, is BNS.

Re: Coronavirus (COVID-19) - community and consumer impacts?

Just after watching a video of an hour long speech by Dr. Michael Greger he made back in 2008 where he basically warned of a coming influenza pandemic much like the one we are now facing. Unfortunately, he was only preaching to the choir. 99% of the rest of the population refused to listen.

Re: Inter Pipeline Ltd (Symbol-IPL) (formerly IPL.UN)

This will the first time in many years where I haven't sold a stock right after a dividend cut. No inclination to do so yesterday, and absolutely none today. Waiting to see if and how many other Canadian companies I own will cut their dividends for 2020. I'll decide what to do with my shares in IPL before the end of the calendar year. No plans to add to what I already have. I'd look at other Canadian pipes before I did that, or else throw my money at an entirely different sector. Quality will be more important than ever in this changed environment.

I just stick to the balanced ETF, but I keep hearing that the interest rates on U.S. ten year bonds are only about 0.6%. U.S. TIPS are in the negative. Jeremy Siegel was saying only a few weeks ago that a retiree cannot live on a typical 60/40 portfolio anymore and would have to depend more on dividends using a 75% stock 25% bond mix. Of course he has Wisdomtree to sell as well, but that's another story.

Edit: 1.6% changed to 0.6%
