I'm pretty sure that was the situation with my father, who had terminal lung cancer. My father was in a lot pain during the last few weeks of his life. His doctor was a close family friend. I believe the doctor decided to end my father's suffering, which was the right decision.

Re: Anyone know a Canadian (best) or us residential or condo REIT yielding 6% or more?

REIT distributions can be composed of a mix of dividends, return of capital, or interest income. Dividends and ROC are tax advantaged compared to interest distributions from money market funds. Also REIT distributions generally increase each year. Does the actual split between dividends/ROC/interest income indicate anything about the REIT's health? For example, can one infer anything about the quality of the REIT (or quality of its management) from whether its distribution are taxed as ordinary income vs. return of capital? No, the split of a REIT's distribution doesn't infer anything about about the quality of the REIT or it's management. Management doesn't get to choose the split of the distribution. If a REIT has capital gains or ROC, t...

Yes I think the ACB adjustment of $5 is correct. According to the press release from Allied, the total special distribution was $5.48 per unit, composed of $5.00 non-cash distribution and $0.48 cash distribution.

REIT Non-Cash Distribution and ACB

A heads-up if you hold CapREIT or Allied Properties REIT. Both of these REITs had non-cash distributions in 2023 which will affect the ACB. The REIT non-cash distribution is similar to an ETF phantom distribtion. The non-cash distribution will increase the ACB for these REITs.

I wasn't aware of the REIT non-cash distribution until I noticed my TDDI account activities this week showed the non-cash distributions back-dated to Dec 2023.

I thought the lawyer's fee was exhorbitant, but judging by other posts, maybe the fee wasn't so bad.

Or is it also the idea that money market can go down so it smore like owning a longer term bond? Just trying to understand why reits would be better than a 5-10-15 year TIP bond or etf.

Re: Any options for when taxable space becomes a lot larger than tax advantaged?

I'm a US citizen in my late 30s living in Canada the past few years, and will likely retire here. I've been fortunate to have enough income the past few years that my taxable account is starting to really dwarf my tax advantaged space. My brokerage account is about 3.5x the size of my tax advantaged accounts and the gap will only get wider. I am wondering if there is anything "better" I can do with excess income compared to putting it into a brokerage account, e.g. whole life insurance (which I am generally very wary of). My non-Registered accounts are about 3 times the size of my Reg accounts. I try to minimize taxes by holding fixed income and interest-bearing investments in my Reg accounts. For my non-Reg accounts, I previousl...

A MMF holds debt instruments whose market values fluctuate. These assets can make capital gains or losses, hence the possibility for notional or reinvested distributions for which no cash is disbursed.
Thanks. Does a USD HISA also incur phantom distributions? I had the choice of using a USD MMF or a USD HISA to soak up my USD dividends. The MMF had a slightly higher yield than the HISA, so I chose the MMF. It might have been simpler if I had gone with the HISA and avoided the complications of phantom distributions.

TDDI says one of the distributions was a notional distribution (i.e. phantom distribution). Does this sound correct? Re: Computer problems

I have an external monitor and keyboard connected to my laptop. I normally keep the laptop lid closed, and the Windows11 Power Option set to "When I Close the lid" > "Do Nothing". When I shut down the laptop I go to Sleep mode. However it appears that with the Do Nothing power setting, Microsoft OneDrive continues to sync even if the computer is in sleep mode. So in sleep mode my external monitor periodically turns on when OneDrive attempts to sync. Is there any way to stop OneDrive from syncing when the laptop is in sleeep mode and the lid-closed Power option is set to Do Nothing?
