Re: RRIF Withdrawal Notice From TDDI

I found a new video from TDDI that I hadn't seen about the new RRIF Withdrawal Panel and it answers a lot of questions.
Looks like a convenient feature to use.

I agree. The last time my wife changed her monthly RIF withdrawal from Qtrade she had to print out a form, fill it out and mail it in.

Re: Bank and Credit Card Fraud

I had an odd situation yesterday. I got an email from Rogers MasterCard to inform me of a $0 charge that I didn't recognize. Shortly after, I got another email to inform me that my personal info had been changed. I called Rogers. Among other questions, they asked me for my email address and street address. My answers didn't match their info. I ended up talking to the fraud department. In one call yesterday morning, someone had called in and successfully changed my street address, my email address, and (I came to learn) ordered a new card on my account for someone with my surname. Wow! Shouldn't a combination of requests like that raise a red flag? It makes me wonder whether credit card issuers have became blasé about fraud.

Not intentionally. :D I'm okay with this setup, although it seems that a GoC site should be able to cope with Safari and not require page reloads to view income tax information.

I've installed Chrome to see whether it works with CRA's website. My sign-in now leads to a "this site cannot be reached" page but if I reload that page the My Account page opens properly.

Is anyone else unable to log in to CRA My Account? I can load the My Account for Individuals page but not beyond. Selecting Sign-in partner or CRA login both lead to "Failed to open page" after a lengthy delay. I'm using Safari on a MacBook.

I am curious if you escalated further with Qtrade and the result, as I am (was) considering opening an account there.
Qtrade seems pretty confident that they fulfilled their obligation, which was merely to redeem the debentures. Strictly speaking there was no requirement for a decision on my part so they didn't have to communicate with me. I emailed investor relations at MSI and asked whether they had informed Qtrade. They didn't reply. Going forward, I'll be leary of "in the money" convertible debentures because I think I'm likely to get caught out by another redemption.

Re: Corporate bond redemptions

I don’t think so, Keith. I think that Norbert’s correct... that no action or decision is required on my part so the broker doesn’t have to communicate with me. Having said that, the situation sucks.
Norbert Schlenker wrote: 30 Jul 2013 12:01 As for being informed ahead of time, you're always on your own. The situation is worse at a discount broker, because an agent has no legal obligation to inform you of an upcoming corporate action when no decision is required from you, say to choose among offered alternatives. Their sole obligation in this case is to forward the funds when the note is paid.

Re: Corporate bond redemptions

This thread was exactly what I was looking for. My wife and I held MSI convertible debentures in our Qtrade RSPs. I noticed on the weekend that they had been redeemed last week. Had I known that they were going to be redeemed, we would have converted them to MSI stock. (Each $100 debenture was convertible to about $130 worth of stock at current prices.) I emailed Qtrade to ask whether they had attempted to contact me and they replied that there was no requirement - it was a mandatory redemption. This jives with Norbert's comments above. What made me feel especially stupid was that it looks like less than 2% of the outstanding debentures were redeemed. Apparently almost everyone was aware of the redemption and converted beforehand. Why wouldn't you just transfer 100% of a 'whole account' at a time to TDDI (or all accounts at one time) and have TDDI pick up that $141.25 transfer/closeout fee for each account? I have never heard of anyone making a multi-year slow migration before.
Two issues. A friend transferred an entire account between discount brokerages and it took months. The sending brokerage dragged it out and made it as painful as possible. Also, each Qtrade account holds a GIC that TDDI has said they could not accept being transferred in.

In fact we have a trading account and two RSPs with Qtrade - about $400K total. We've been migrating money over the past couple of years to TDDI and - depending on their answer to my email - the migration may accelerate.

Qtrade TFSA deregistration

I've got a few TFSAs and I've been in the process of consolidating the money into a single TFSA. I'm reluctant to pay the closure fee (typically about $150) so I've left about $100 in each of the inactive ones. When I tried to take my Qtrade TFSA balance down to about $100 they changed the amount of the withdrawal so that the balance would be $141.25. I didn't initially grasp the significance of that amount but I now understand that it is $125 (their closure fee) plus HST. Without advising me, they then closed the account, helping themselves to the $141.25 balance as their fee. I just emailed them, inquiring as to whether the closure was intentional on their part and whether they would be advising me, which would seem appropriate. No reply ...

There is no superficial loss if you sell a security at a loss, while simultaneously holding the same security in a different type of account, provided that the latter was purchased more than 30 days before the sale.
If I sell half of a holding at a loss I can claim a capital loss that year? That would be good for me. I've been adjusting the ACB and delaying claiming the loss in the belief that it was superficial.

To those watching this from the outside, this is a subtle, but important point. Physicians bear much risk in their businesses particularly with regards to wage inflation, rent inflation, material inflation, and now tax inflation  without any means to offset those increased costs with higher fees.
My SIL has a CCPC as a surgeon. He is assigned OR time by the hospital and bills OHIP for the operations he performs. He pays no wages, rent or material. I really don't see the risk in his business.

If CCPCs are supposed to be MD retention programs then they should be limited to MDs. I see a number of former employees who have formed CCPCs and now invoice their former employers for their services.

I'd like to weigh in as someone who has paid income tax on a salary for almost 50 years and recently have listened to several people gloat about how they have dramatically reduced tax on income channeled through a CCPC. It had reached a point where some of us were starting to feel like suckers.

RBD/RBCDI Incompetence

My wife bought a 5-year $10,000 TFSA GIC from Ally in Jan 2013. When RBC bought Ally it became an RBC GIC. We were talking to the local RBC branch manager recently and she suggested transferring it in kind to my wife's new RBCDI TFSA. As we sat across from her she called RBCDI just to confirm the GIC could be transferred in kind. When it arrived at RBCDI, it showed as having a current value of $10,021 and a value at maturity (next Jan) of $10,245. We used the website messaging service to query RBC and they replied that they had sent $11,076. RBC asked RBCDI to investigate and to report back to us. RBCDI did so and told us that they had received $10,021. Both insist that the other is at fault. The manager called my wife the other day just to...

Re: Which Broker Do you Use?

I've been with TDDI for a long time and am generally happy with them. My wife and I had some Ally TFSA GICs which had become RBC TFSA GICs. Since they started maturing last month we thought we'd open RBCDI TFSAs to receive the proceeds. What a nightmare!!! Even though we went together to our local RBC branch, our two identical situations were handled quite differently. The proceeds of my GIC went into the RBCDI account after it matured but my wife's went just before it matured, triggering a $536 penalty. RBC wants to blame RBCDI and RBCDI wants to blame RBC. Also, I was also surprised to learn that RBCDI is only open M-F 7AM-8PM. Suffice to say, I regret having anything to do with RBCDI. Based on my experience, I would put them at the botto...

Re: Wills, notification of death and probate

Reading about notarial wills in this thread got me thinking. My wife and I have notarial wills from when we lived in Quebec. We now live in Ontario. I'm wondering whether we should get new wills done by an Ontario lawyer. Has anyone had to deal with a notarial will after a death in the ROC?
