Re: T+1 Settlement is Coming! On May 28, 2024

I don't do a lot of trading, so this change is really not that important to me.

However, last year I got dinged for $25 interest. I sold some HBB on 29 Aug. The next day, I saw that I had "buying power" due to the sale so I bought MIP610. The settlement date for HBB was 31 Aug and the settlement date for the MIP610 was 30 Aug so I got charged a day's interest. The charge appeared in my Sep statement and I thought "what the hay?"

With this change, it wouldn't have happened. Of course, if they hadn't shown me the "buying power", I would have waited another day.

I wouldn't mind paying the fee if the advertised benefits can be used. e.g. I'm over 65 and the travel insurance is only good for those 65 and younger.

And another incident. But this was an old plane; a 737-800. As mentioned above, every problem with a Boeing a/c gets reported these days.

EQ card has a $5K (per day) limit. That's a problem when buying airline tickets for two.

Cancelled my HT Visa card after they cut back on benefits and there was repeated fraudulent activity on it.

I was going to ask Brim to increase my limit. Guess I won't bother with that. Now I have to go shopping for a new card again; I hate that.

Article is pay-walled, but I can guess what it says.

Reminds me of the time WAC Bennett told the gov't employees pension plan to load up on BC Hydro bonds. He wanted the bonds sold - low returns be dammed!

I hope you took the money in cash. I wouldn't accept a cheque.

Seriously, ID theft is getting worse. Expect to encounter more facial and voice recognition systems going forward.

Re: CIBC and Simplii - Deceased person

Today, I talked to a Simplii employee who looked at the file, apologized and said she would get things moving.

So nice to hear a CIBC employee say "I will do ..." rather than "You have to do..."

Fingers crossed.

Re: Executor Fee T4

I turn 70 this year so I can avoid the CPP part.

There are ways around all this. e.g.
*You could not take the executor's fee and have the beneficiaries "Remember me at Christmas" IOW pay you out of their portions. You would have to be dealing with people you can trust to be discrete.
*The will could say something about "I leave $x to my brother in law who is taking care of my troublesome sister". The testator would have to make sure that bequest does not mention the executor role. You would also trust that the executor would not take both the bequest and the executor fee!

Anyhow, without the separate bequest and dealing with a bit of a flaky beneficiary, I would like to go the open approach.

Follow up x 2.

My wife never gave up. She got Alaska to issue us "credit certificates"; enough to pay for 1/2 the cost of our next round trip tickets to Hawaii. :D

T3 Trust Guide:
If the trust paid executor, liquidator, or trustee fees, or if an employee benefit plan or an employee trust made distributions other than a return of employee contributions, file a T4SUM Summary of Remuneration Paid, and the related T4 Statement of Remuneration Paid (slip). For more information, see RC4120 Employers' Guide – Filing the T4 Slip and Summary.

Re: CIBC and Simplii - Deceased person

I thought that since I was dealing with just one bank - yes, three divisions - but just one bank - things would go smoothly. Believe me, once this is over I won't darken their doorstep again.

At one point, I was going to go to the CIBC complaint department. If you make a complaint, they will get back to you in 3 business days. I guess that gives you time to open an account elsewhere!

Executor Fee T4

I'm going to take my executor fee. I think I earned it and the will stipulates the amount of the fee. I know have to report the executor fee as income. To do this, I need to make a T4 slip. But to make a T4 slip, I should have a payroll account.

It seems crazy to create a payroll account to issue one T4 - the account will never be used again. I'm thinking of just creating a T4 and leaving the account blank. What have others done?

Re: CIBC and Simplii - Deceased person

Update. Dealing with CIBC is simplii horrible. I told the local branch account rep what Simplii had said about the interconnected system and gave her the file number. She then uploaded the documents to the file. Since the will had not gone through probate, I had limited access. At Investor's edge, I could sell the securities and get the book value at time of death. At Simplii, I could get account values at time of death but not statements. Fair enough. I opened an estate account at CIBC and deposited the CPP death benefit and the last OAP cheque. After probate was granted, I was back at the local branch to get the will uploaded to the account again. I was present while the branch manager did this. Called Simplii and they seemed happy with t...

In my book, maintaining army is budget’s responsibility while building houses isn’t. I’ve seen government-build houses in several countries and it ain’t pretty. Business is perfectly capable of meeting demand for housing as long as the conditions are right. Housing starts are trending down because conditions are wrong and the taxpayer can do nothing about it.
Yes, it's a disgrace that we are not meeting our NATO commitments.

It's ridiculous to have people sitting in emergency rooms waiting to see a doctor for a simple prescription renewal - let the pharmacist handle it.

My wife had a Rx renewal last year. The pharmacist asked why she was still using this drug as there were a newer generation of drugs with less side effects available. She asked her doc to make the change - it helped her a lot.

My mother in law had a physician who charged about $100 per month. That fee included house calls to her independent living facility. Money well spent IMO.

Some brokerages do not make it easy to change the Book Values they carry. Sometimes a particular form must be submitted, or even a Letter of Direction. It would not be worth the effort on an ongoing basis. Just keep one's own records......

Why not change the book value that your broker shows to match your records? The broker does not take any responsibility for the accuracy of the book value anyway.
