Re: WTH CRA? You're so incompetent lately

I feel your pain. Several years ago, my wife thought she would start a business. She changed her mind when she found out that there was no market for what she wanted to sell (don't ask). Unfortunately, one of her "friends" told her that it was a good idea to get a "GST number", which she did. She di...

Re: TFSA Contribution 2018

Remember what happened with Cap Gains exemptions and tax rate changes over the decades? It will happen eventually with TFSAs. Naive to think otherwise. OK, I see what you meant now. You believe that the gov't will set a cap of $100K. Who knows? I doubt that it would cost them an election if they pu...

Could have bought one for about $600 when I started this thread about 3.5 years ago, but I didn't. Now they are over $15K. Oh well, could have dropped to zero too.

I don't like gambling.

WADR, consider buying an annual $90 subscription to Quicken and spend your valuable time elsewhere. It has served me well for over 20 years. I've never quite understood 'make work' projects. Many of us enjoy DIY. It's educational and good exercise for the brain. Good thing to do on a day in the cra...

I'm a member of a BC credit union. The account number is 12 digits, but you can simply ignore the first 4 numbers if you only have room for 8. For those who are interested: The institution number "809" is used by Coast Capital as well as VanCity. "809" is for BC Central. http://canada-banks-info.com...

Re: Preferreds

[quote="ockham" I stand to be corrected but doubt Insomniac ever did any serious work with regards to prefs. IIRC he bought ETFs, lost money, bailed near the lows and decided this asset class wasn't for him. Yes, I bailed on ZPR almost 2 years ago and it dropped another ~25% after that. At the time...

Re: Preferreds

I agree ETFs are the best choice for most investors in the pref space. I'd suggest investors really do not need prefs in their portfolios. The more I look at it, knowing what I know now, I'd probably skip them entirely. I've experimented, gotten bruised here and there, and will not add to my holdin...

Apparently, you can get historical data from Yahoo: For historical data you can use something like: //*http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/table.csv?s=WU&a=11&b=15&c=2016&d=11&e=19&f=2016&g=d&ignore=.csv*// where the FROM date is: &a=11&b=15&c=2016 and the TO date is: &d=11&e=19&f=2016 Be careful, field...

Re: What Investment Measurement is Important to You?

I look at total portfolio value (registered accounts + non-registered accounts + GICs + cash), estimated income and asset allocation. Look at estimated income for tax planning purposes. Check asset allocation to see if it's getting out of wack and needs to be adjusted. Look at total portfolio value ...

Re: RIF RETURNS FOR 2016

I agree posting YTD numbers is only for bragging purposes.

e.g. You could brag that the Canadian market is up over 18% YTD. However, today XIC is at $24.41 which is still below the $24.79 it reached on Aug 29, 2014. So, not really much to brag about.

I didn't do anything with my portfolio this year; just let it ride. No regrets. IMO, we had 2 significant events this year which could have wreaked havoc with my portfolio; Brexit and the election of Trump as POTUS. The portfolio dipped after Brexit, but recovered fairly quickly. After Trump's elect...

Yes, we had 6 beneficiaries, evenly split. There was a initial payment and a final payment. $50K was withheld from the initial payment for possible taxes due, executors fees, accountant fees, etc. Final payment was made after clearance certificate was obtained.

Dang. I was lazy and used Bloomberg's site to get the expense ratios. https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/XIC:CN

Looks like Bloomberg reported the rest of them OK, so the 0.55% I calculated should be good.
