Determine your work space use – Home office expenses for employees - Canada.ca and Calculate your expenses – Home office expenses for employees - Canada.ca are useful for this exercise.

In part years we used the CRA calculator tool (2nd link) to provide the percentage of work space. 25% does seem quite high.

Re: Orienting Yourself in the User Control Panel

Hopefully FWF members new here and those who have been around for quite some time are aware of using BBCode's in their posts. If not then maybe read the helpful BBCode guide for a refresher.

Members might also want to check their User Control Panel (UCP) settings for Edit posting defaults which has controls for whether or not BBCode, smilies, signatures and reply notifications are enabled or disabled.

While you are checking things in your UCP settings you might also take a look at Notifications in Edit notification options which controls when and how you receive notifications for various items.

Does anyone else have helpful tips on UCP settings that might benefit others?

Let see if I can find a tutorial on how to post links from articles posted on my TDW account without giving away my ID (???). Really not sure how that works, not that tech savvy. Any guidance will be appreciated. I suspect that is not possible when you are quoting research/news material within a discount brokerage account. Re: Pi Day

For some background ... A Slice of Pi (π) Day History | Exploratorium March 14 is Pi (π) Day, the annual celebration of a never-ending number—and Albert Einstein’s birthday. How did pi inspire a national holiday and an international celebration thousands of years after its discovery? It all started at the Exploratorium with former staff physicist, tinkerer, and media specialist Larry Shaw. In 1988, three years after the death of Exploratorium Founder Frank Oppenheimer, staff gathered at a retreat in Monterey, California, to soul search and brainstorm. It was there that Shaw linked March 14 (3.14) with the digits of pi (3.14159…), seeing it as an extraordinary opportunity to bring Exploratorium staff together. And π Day was born. On the firs...

Re: The government is considering changing investment objectives for CPP

Is the Subject line accurate here? As far as I can tell the genesis for this is an open letter from Canadian business executives and reply article from other executives who work, or worked, for pension plans. More than 90 Canadian business executives recently signed an open letter calling for governments to make re-evaluating pension model “a national priority,” It would be helpful to have a link to that open letter. In fact, despite its clear mandate to earn the best financial return on the assets it manages, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) is already committed to leveraging those assets to pursue collateral objectives instead. CPPIB’s investment strategy now involves pushing society towards “net-zero” carbon emissions by ...

I would suggest this is far outside the scope of knowledge here on FWF and hence some of us have suggested Google might provide better answers.

Ultimately the Canadian tax system relies on self-assessment by tax payers. Each tax payer is responsible for reporting their total income and determining their total tax owing. CRA enforces the tax law by performing a number of audits on individuals and businesses each year.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck comes to mind particularly because you classify this as a "regular gift".

"Regular gift" sounds very much like an income arrangement and therefore should be self-reported on your tax return. The Canadian tax system relies on taxpayers to properly self report their income, so at some point CRA could poke their nose into your "arrangement".

Yet another article that might interest some. CRA clarifies penalty relief rules for bare trust returns - The Globe and Mail
Globe and Mail wrote:The CRA said on Tuesday it won’t charge standard penalties for taxpayers who submit their 2023 bare trust returns after the deadline. It also said it will apply a more severe kind of penalty for people who fail to submit the required paperwork only “in the most egregious cases” of gross negligence.

The agency had indicated in December that it would avoid regular penalties for late bare trust returns. But it also said it would still apply the more onerous penalties when it deemed taxpayers “knowingly” failed to file or did so owing to gross negligence.

Another good resource is TaxTips.ca - Combining Spousal and Non-Spousal RRSPs or RRIFs . Both the taxpayer and their spouse can still make contributions to this account. If the taxpayer makes contributions, it is very important that the financial institution is aware of the source of the funds, so that the contribution receipt indicates that it is a taxpayer contribution, and not a contribution by the spouse. The same is true when it is a spousal contribution - make sure the contribution receipt indicates that it is a spousal contribution. ...

Drifting a bit off-topic I know.

Technology is often the problem as well as the solution.

At one of my children's rental apartment, which was newly built in the last couple of years, the entry door does support mobile devices. Good so far because they don't and won't have a landline.

The problem is the system won't recognize a mobile number from outside the local exchange. In their case one mobile number has an area code from out of province so cannot be used. The other mobile number is the correct area code however from a different region in the province, so still is not consider "local" and therefore cannot be used.
