Re: Changing past tax returns (T1-ADJ)

Thanks. I originally started using UFile to prepare and file their returns for the 2015 tax year, so 2015 and 2016 were optimized with pension splitting. That is where I learned about the pension splitting provision, and where I discovered that my father hadn't been claiming the pension split optimi...

Changing past tax returns (T1-ADJ)

I've recently taken over handling some of my parent's financial affairs. They are in their 80s. Back a couple of years ago I started helping them by using software to prepare and NetFile their tax returns. I had them grant me to Represent them with CRA so I could review their Notice of Assessments, ...

Peculiar_Investor, If a guaranteed return on their down payment money over the next five years won't provide the necessary amount to make it work, then I would suggest the prudent step would be to look for opportunities to save more rather than take on riskier investments with the hope of growing t...

Re: Saving for down payment in roughly 5 years

During my dog walk this morning I got thinking further about this and I started to look at it from another perspective. The thing is that it's pretty difficult to anticipate now the cost of the house that will be bought in 5 years. I would agree, so I wouldn't bother trying to figure it out. But the...

Re: Saving for down payment in roughly 5 years

Not sure how well REITs would correlate to house prices. The residential rental REITs don't necessarily correlate to house prices but I suspect they are the most likely bet, e.g. CAR.UN or BEI.UN depending on location. Bottom line: There is no way to seek moderate return on capital without having r...

Re: Saving for down payment in roughly 5 years

The thing is that it's pretty difficult to anticipate now the cost of the house that will be bought in 5 years. That depends on where the OP intends to purchase a house. Many regions of Canada have fairly stable and somewhat predictable housing prices. The headlines of course only want to talk abou...

My standard answer to this type of question is the quote "return of capital is more important than return on capital." * (my underline). Since this is for a future down payment and therefore an exact amount to be available is not required, I'd soften that a bit to make sure that make sure you unders...

I'm working back to the OPs post here where the matter of cost first entered the discussion, One obvious issue, when it comes to portfolio size, is cost. Assume $10 trades and yearly turnover. With a 20 stock portfolio, that's $400; for a 60 stock portfolio, it's $600. If you want to keep those cost...
