Home insurance with secondary or seasonal property coverage

My parents have their principle residence in Ontario and also own a summer use cottage in Ontario. The cottage is opened on the May long weekend and closed on the Thanksgiving weekend. During the summer my parents spend most of their time at the cottage. The cottage is never rented out. During the w...

Welcome to FWF. I cannot provide any specific knowledge on your questions but I know there are others here who have experience in these matters.

You might also want to review our wiki article, Cross-border and expatriate issues, that covers some of the logistics that you might need to consider.

Re: US citizen working in Canada - what to put in RRSP?

Welcome to FWF. Looks like you've done quite a bit of homework, thank you. considering that I can only contribute to 3 accounts going forward (US tax-free, US taxable, and RRSP), which funds should go where? I would think you could also establish a taxable account in Canada. You don't mention it but...

Re: Best Credit Card (2016-2018)

Ultimately the 'best credit card' will depend on the circumstances, requirements and usage patterns of the card holder(s). I don't believe we will ever get back to the one-size fits all credit card. That one has long ago left the barn. The marketing wizards at the financial institutions are always c...

Re: Important change to the Amazon.ca Rewards Visa Card program

So, should we have a dedicated thread on what card best replaces the Chase Amazon Visa? It might help avoid a lot of scrolling through other threads to get the answer. A dedicated topic to discuss dealing with Chase's decision to close the Amazon Visa card and how it will impact those holding/using...

Re: $450K to invest for six months -- what would you do?

Given the short term nature I wouldn't take any additional risk. I'd just hold my nose and accept the essentially risk-free return of a HISA or equivalent such as commercial paper. No-one has an accurate crystal ball but it is worth considering that the current bull market is very long in the tooth....

Re: Country Investing Based on CAPE

An interesting point of view and data set, but I'm not sure how relevant would be to an individual investor. From my reading of FWF'ers, they fall mostly into two camps. Camp A are those that index, who for the most part tend to use broad-based indexes such as S&P/TSX, S&P500 and MSCI EAFE (or equiv...

Isn't this where the bond guys at PHN or at Mawer get to earn their keep? Probably, although given the trade sizes involved it probably all remains within the discount brokerage. Just channeling my inner Walter Mitty. It is probably the same as trading preferred shares knowing the other side is pro...

Further reviewing my bond portfolio spreadsheet, the BRP Finance 11/05/18 bond that I sold was purchased in July 2010 at $100.59 and sold at $102.32, so I've also locked in some capital gains with a total return around 41% (according to the spreadsheet).
