Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2017)

I'm not a fan of RBC but now they are offering 2.15% until Dec 1. http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/dms/pba/e-savings/bonus-d-or.html Sounds pretty good to me for one of the major banks. Totally missed this post but was pleasantly surprised today when I checked our RBC eSavings account and found a...

There are a couple of Brookfield preferred shares (BAM.PR.A and BAM.PR.F) that I'm beginning to study and neither has a quote available via Yahoo! Finance. Further sleuthing has revealed that Yahoo! Finance does have quotes for these two preferred shares, they just don't follow the normal conventio...

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

I'm working back to the OPs post here where the matter of cost first entered the discussion, One obvious issue, when it comes to portfolio size, is cost. Assume $10 trades and yearly turnover. With a 20 stock portfolio, that's $400; for a 60 stock portfolio, it's $600. If you want to keep those cost...

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

To maintain a proper comparison about the annual costs due to turnover in a stock portfolio, we should only be considering stock transactions and not be including bond/GIC and other fixed income transactions.

The Government of Canada has published Indexation adjustment for personal income tax and benefit amounts - Canada.ca to include the 2018 adjustments. Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

One obvious issue, when it comes to portfolio size, is cost. Assume $10 trades and yearly turnover. I'm curious why you would make the assumption of yearly turnover. If one is going to manage their own portfolio, I would suggest that buy and hold is a very common strategy and therefore turnover wou...

Re: Adding Bonds to an Equity Portfolio?

Why just Canadian? Isn't there a benefit to having a mixed bond ETF maybe North American bonds? You have huge currency risk with ex-CAD bonds. Fixed income is supposed to provide your portfolio with some stability and/or decrease volatility. Your global bond holdings will look terrible if the looni...

Can anyone else confirm (or deny) that the problem is still occurring, so we can figure out if it is wides...

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

Pondering further on this topic, I would suggest that another argument for the individual do-it-yourself investor to consider when choosing their selection universe. All of the stocks in the S&P/TSX 60 are widely followed and analyzed. Ask yourself what gives you particular insight to select a subse...

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

In a 20 stock portfolio, I wouldn't bet on a niche stock being a reliable 5% component of that portfolio. Perhaps the term large cap is not the right characterization BUT it would typically be a stock whose market presence is well understood, has had a track record of fairly consistent performance ...

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

One diversifies by having 15-25 large cap stocks in one's core portfolio. Anything outside the Cdn top 60 or 100 by market cap (depending on one's POV) is playing on the fringes and only really satisfies one's personal 'fun' button. I would beg to differ on that point. To the best of my memory, non...

Anyway, I fail to understand how preferred shares could be used as replacement for intermediate-duration bonds in a portfolio. I...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2017)

I am doing some tax loss harvesting this morning. In two non-registered accounts I have sold out our position in Cenovus (CVE) at $12.37, which leaves a very small position in a TFSA that I am planning to keep, at least for now. In the non-registered accounts, the CVE position dates back from the sp...

The SMF Add-in is a topic of discussion in How to download data? (and others if you use the search function) and probably is worthy of it's own topic, so I'm starting one. A good resource to follow is SMF Add-in Announcements where the author has announced a new/updated version, New ZIP File -- Vers...

Re: Rate reset preferred share ladder?

I am left to wonder whether the analysis is start and end date sensitive. I am always leary of backtesting because in the past I have found conclusions can be sensitive to the choice of starting and end dates. To say nothing of the selected index having little to do with the subject of this thread(...

Re: Rate reset preferred share ladder?

I'm not sure I understand how you justify replacing bonds with preferred shares. In 2008-2009 and 2015-2016, I would have been quite happy to pay a little more in taxes for the privilege of owning bonds. Wouldn't you? Thanks for the data points and the challenge. I generally don't backtest, so this...

Re: Rate reset preferred share ladder?

Good comments. I am trying to make sure that I think before I act. As with most investing activities I find I am much more successful when I have thought ahead and then developed and implemented a plan versus 'just doing it' without a plan. The plan doesn't have to be too detailed, just enough that ...
