This choice of wording has me a bit curious. Are you a citizen of another country and therefore subject to other than Canadian tax laws/rules?

Re: Housing Bust 2017

A little Google helps here. I would say it depends on how CRA views it, per IT-218R | CRA There is no provision in the Income Tax Act which describes the circumstances in which gains from the sale of real estate are to be determined as being either income or capital. However, in making such determin...

Re: retiring early at 50 - defined benefit pension

How significant is the lower defined benefit pension that you keep mentioning? Reduced by half, 10% or some other factor? Would you consider selling your home and changing location to free up some of the equity that you've built up in your home. Do you expect any windfalls such as inheritances in th...

Re: Pros-cons of home office/incorporating?

Welcome to FWF. Have you also considered that incorporating will bring along additional costs, including but not limited to: costs on lawyer(s) to setup and establish the corporation (likely one-time) and on-going costs for accountants to prepare corporate tax returns. It is often said that the tax ...

Re: Does this screen look right to you? (RSP Contribution)

I do not believe so. UFile is clear that you only record Jan-Feb 2017 contributions that are meant to go towards the 2016 tax year. The very first line of the tax tip quote Adrian supplied is all about ' the past tax year, i.e. 2016 '. That has nothing to do with contributions in Jan-Feb 2017 made ...

Re: Does this screen look right to you? (RSP Contribution)

From my quick review of the captures that the OP has posted it seems like the data has been entered correctly. I would suggest that the OP should review the generated Schedule 7 to understand how the input amounts have been applied to the actual tax schedule. If everything looks correct on Schedule ...

Re: retiring early at 50 - defined benefit pension

Welcome to FWF. That's a pretty open ended question. I realize you probably don't want to reveal too much personal information, but some colour to the questions/concerns you're already considering would probably make for a better discussion starter. I early retired in my 40's because we'd reached wh...

Re: In Trust Accounts - CRA reassessments

If it shows up here on our little FW Forum they must be casting a wide net. Seems CRA is trying to squeeze every last nickel and dime. I would suggest it is just a byproduct of CRA's move to matching properly slips. The same functionality that now gives us the ability to download tax slips into tax...

Re: VT vs VXUS + VTI

VT is too heavy in international. If you must, allocate between 15-30% to VXUS. If it is market cap weighted, how can it be too heavy in international? Warren Buffett and Jack Bogle don't believe in holding any international stocks. And they are American, so their viewpoint isn't exactly objective ...

Re: In Trust Accounts - CRA reassessments

Yes I've run into this problem and can confirm that for many years CRA apparently didn't match slips because they accepted our and our kids returns as filed with the in-trust account capital gains claimed on the kids tax returns. But I do recall that something changed not that long ago and I started...

The good news, Budget 2017 did not include any increase in capital gains inclusion rate (see this discussion for more on Budget 2017 in general). Now to attempt to answer your question. I found this article, How to use a section 85 rollover | Advisor.ca , that states What is eligible property? In br...

JAG, you are just ranting for the sake of ranting. No one suggested that elderly Canadians should be subject to the property surtax. The tax is aimed at foreign investors or/and parachute families who don't pay Canadian income taxes. Many, including myself, are picking up on the wording in the Ryer...

Re: Housing Bust 2017

I've done a quick read of the linked document that describes the proposal and I'm sure the devil is in the details, but there is also a generational factor that I don't believe is addressed in the surtax proposal. Many senior couples are of the generation where only one worked and paid into CPP, whi...

One minor ugliness is this: Capture.PNG I *think* in the old board, the page numbers were on the same line as the byline. Re: Manitoba Tel - Closes at $40.37, Anyone Surprised?

Market makers and professional merger arbitrage investors usually play an active role in these types of situation and I'd find it hard to believe for large companies like BCE and MTS that there would be any scraps left over for the retail investor to profit from the situation.
