Re: gummy-stuff, eh?

Hi fellas: Keith Cowan wrote to say that I've not been buried on this forum (yet). ''course, having just celebrated my 79th birthday, I got me at least one foot buried. Heidi & I now spend our time reading and travelling; our last trip is described here: http://www.gummy-stuff.org/Barcelona-diary.htm I took a peek at that http://www.finiki.org/wiki/Gummy-stuff WOW!! When I woke up to my 79th, I told Heidi that when I got both feet buried, my gummy-stuff.org web site will be buried with me ... so no need to pay the annual webspace fees. It's nice to know that all the stuff won't be buried with me. (I appreciate having a copy on FWF.) A few weeks ago I got email asking about some financial thingy. I said that I can't recall having written...

Re: Perfect Correlation? Risk = Standard Deviation? Huh?

Aah, wouldn't it be wunnerful if'n financial writers were clear about what "correlation" they were speaking of: correlation between prices or returns . Here , for example, they write about beta and mean the relationship between returns . Then it says: ... an asset's beta is equal to the product of its correlation coefficient, R, and its standard deviation divided by the market's standard deviation. 'course, that ain't true unless they're talking about the correlation between returns , right? Anyway, if you click on the picture in my earlier post, you can download an Excel spreadsheet. It's got a chart and, if you move that chart, you'll see the correlation of prices has also been calculated ... and it ain't the same as the correla...

Perfect Correlation? Risk = Standard Deviation? Huh?

It says here:
Perfect positive correlation ... implies that as one security moves, either up or down, the other security will move in lockstep, in the same direction.
Does anybuddy actually believe that?

One also reads that Standard Deviation (or stock "volatility") measures the risk associated with a stock.
Does anybuddy actually believe that?

Sorry ... but it still bugs me.

gummy-stuff, eh?

Okay, so I've finally decided to leave my http://www.gummy-stuff.org sandbox (after all these years, eh?) Image

However, I've also decided to make all that "stuff" available here, in compressed format:
http://www.gummy-stuff.org/CD-gummy.rar
It's (about) 145 MB and ya gotta un-compress it.

Ciao!

P.S.

The spreadsheet calculates Max, Min and Avg. (Try changing some numbers.)
The spreadsheet I actually use also calculates "Best so far", but it's a mess and would require major mods to make it readable (to anybuddy but me).
Besides, if'n you begin in January and do just one more on December 31 ...
