Re: Miscellaneous 2015
Someone posted a link to an article some time back regarding changes countries have made to limit cash transactions - i think it was a mild conspiracy theory article - and detailing the limits to cash transactions within certain countries. I don't recall if these changes were unilateral or in response to an international conference.
Anyway I have been searching for the link with no success - any help?
Thanks

Why is a statement by an officer of Parliament, legislated to be non-partisan, considered political in this thread? Would a statement by the Auditor General also be considered political? Was this moderator's request of Friday April 24th to keep politics out of a financial thread/forum not clear? Cease and desist.

Re: TD Direct Investing (was Waterhouse) Service
When this fee was first introduced I learned on this forum that TDDI would waive it for seniors. Since you have a RIF, I'm assuming you're a senior so that should work. At the time I told a senior relative of mine about that and they waived it for them just by asking. I would call them and ask "I understand they waive for seniors, is that right?" And take it from there.
Shhh now, don't tell AltaRed or your friend will be paying fees in a whistle.

Re: Seniors' discounts should be scrapped, study suggests
Here's the big senior's discount. Seniors pay the same for health care, via taxes, as younger people, standardizing for income levels. Yet they consume between five and ten times as much health care resources. That's a huge discount from what seniors should be paying for health care. George Are you not discounting that seniors have been paying taxes and medicare fees for years, well decades, before actually commencing to consume those health care resources in their now senior years? Did their payments not afford health care for other seniors and less fortunate individuals in the late 1960's and thereafter? It is not the consumption of services that is problematic but rather the cost and administration of those services I suggest. Do you th...

I never steal.
It was a razz - something you do on a regular basis on this forum - however it seems you can not take a razz back.

Then why do you read them and quote them? Why not just look out the window instead? :P I never pay for the Star. I read it when I can get it for free to understand how other points of view are presented. I'll quote it whenever I find something I find either very good, or really outrageous. Oh.. so do you steal editions of The Star from your neighbours or the local coffee shops? How noble of you to try to research how other points of view either mirror or rankle your own thoughts - and for free as well! I thought you stated that when you read articles by Ms Mallick your blood pressure rises...so again, however you acquire your "free" copies of "The Star", why read the articles if it raises your blood pressure? Re: Income Splitting [Policy discussion]
So many comments and different views on this topic suggests that the entire issue is not based on economics but is only a political gambit. Let's not forget that Saint Flaherty cast doubt on the policy.
On the upside maybe the policy can squeeze more kids out of a reluctant generation in order to provide additional unpaid interns - workers - to satisfy Poloz's solution. Imagine a generation of unpaid workers - hmm, were they not called serfs in the grand empires of yore?
I know of young people in the 1990's and early 2000's who had to pay for the opportunity to article, for free, at law firms.

Re: Income Splitting
Just more complication and frustration to the tax code and filing of one's taxes I think for little benefit. Tax preparation software companies will have to scramble to address this in their software and many questions remain regarding how the "tax savings" due to income splitting can be deployed to other programs such as RRSP, RESP, and TFSA. Also is this only applicable to "earned income"? What if a couple are both seniors living on retirement/investment income and have adopted children under 18? I know two couples in my community who are seniors and who have adopted young kids from China - so can they can split their pensions and also splt their income from those pensions under this policy? This has more to do with sh...

Re: Virus Vaccine-Shingles
Had the Shingles vaccine last year - subsidized by my medical insurance so I only paid about $70.00. The pharmacist actually checked with my insurance company to reduce the cost. My aunt suffered from Shingles in her later life, and I have had dermatological problems in the past several years so I thought it wise to take the vaccination. One only needs one vaccine although there is some debate regarding the effectiveness as one ages. Regardless, if there is a history of the disease in one's family I suggest one has the vaccine. Edit: Same thing for the pneumonia vaccine - but discuss with your doctor. I had two terrible bouts with pneumonia in the past ten years but after having the P vaccine three years ago all has been well. I know there ...

Read some comments today on another web site and the "expert" said that COS has serious problems with their own infrastructure, as well as a history of fires and explosions, suggesting significant impending capital costs to upgrade their facilities at the same time as facing declining income due to the drop in the market price of oil.

The CRTC has a mandate and the individuals appointed to the CRTC are required to uphold that mandate. Very simple in a way.
Only Parliament can amend that mandate. Perhaps the mandate is dated and falls short of addressing new communications technologies, yet it is Parliaments' responsibility, through consultation and study, to update the mandate. No point in dissing the CRTC for working within their mandate.

FWIW, we don't know what went on behind the scenes on the EU-Canada trade deal nor what role/influence/support these specific individuals had in cementing the deal. If they worked hard to make it happen, then cementing those signatures with a reception and plane ride home is petty change in the overall scheme of things (no different than a golf game/night out on the town after conclusion of a tough business deal). Haters are going to hate. Re: Where to retire?
Simply the name "High River" could have been a clue.
I recall reading an interesting review of local names associated with meteorological and climatological characteristics for the specific location, whether it be a Point - a Bay - a Strait - or a Cove - on the BC Coast. Some of the names were from the indigenous languages and some were attributable to the Spanish or English explorers of the region.
So High River...hmmm?
Edit: Sorry perhaps off topic.

Re: Home Depot Security Breach
I quit providing any personal information several years ago. Retailers would request one's postal code,or sometimes one's phone number.
Originally I would provide false information but then I just got tired of the dance - the retailer from which I am purchasing a pair of jeans needs nothing other than my cash or, hopefully secure, card transaction.
Reward and loyalty cards, as well we all know, are nothing but data mining and personal tracking schemes.

Well Shine no offence taken. As I said I often don't agree with what Aunti Margie writes. However did you even read the article? Your bolded words do not appear in her article. They are mine. If I want to take some else's words I put them in Quotes. Too bad that you think them stupid. I stand by what I said. I do not have a car. I grocery shop every other day and cook most nights. If you see people as I do daily not buying the specials but rather high priced items, loading up their carts with non essentials etc. it is not surprising that some people with limited resources run out of food money. During the ice storm power outage the local TV was full of interviews with people in assisted housing bemoaning the fact that they had a freezer fu...
